Its not that its in an iphone.. its that its on an "iphone plan" which they see whether or not there is a sim in that phone or another.. What you would end up doing is, when you call and tell them, "Its not in an iphone" they will say.. "ok, let me get you out of this iphone plan" and they will do that. .then your sim will not have the iphone data which makes your phone close to useless..

Then when you call them to reinstate the iphone status on the account, the MMS block will go right back

Has anyone attempted to put your sim in a different phone and have them activate mms?

I put my SIM in my mom's samsung and tried to send an MMS and it failed, but then a couple hours later it worked. Now MMS is working perfectly on my iPhone.

yup, thats just what happen to me.

btw, my vvm isnt working now. isnt there a fix for it, can someone tell me what it is.

thanks

FINALLY! OMFG it works now. After my previous post, in which I mentioned speaking to a rep. She tried to keep sending me test MMS which I never received.

Fast forward to just now, I got bored and switched SIM cards to an unlocked Motorola RIZR and had my gf send me MMS. After receiving it, I switched the SIM back to the iPhone 3G and voila!

I received the flood of test messages that AT&T kept trying to send. Now to see how long this will last...

in the Cellular Data Network settings, I had to change the visual voicemail apn from wap.cingular to acds.voicemail

restarted the phone and it started working again.

Just wait another few hours and they won't work. All these people that say they got them working is on borrowed time.

do you really think they're gonna go and turn it back off? once the accounts are switched so they can receive normal mms, they aren't gonna be going back and disabling it again. They're gonna be starting the process of switching everyone over soon, and once thats done, they'll release a carrier settings update to enable mms.

hmmmm

what did you tell the rep exactly?

*sigh*

After a reboot, it stopped working again. I give up.

To answer the question above, I just told the rep I would like my iPhone set up for MMS as it wasn't working properly.

Okay, so I'm giving up since I've called a few times and they're actually changing it for me, but it just doesn't work. I think it has something to do with my older texting plan.

Anyways, does anyone have the original carrier file? My phone seems to start up slower now with that special 5.0 carrier update (like after the apple logo is there, it shows a black screen for a minute).

I too would like the original carrier file. I can't seem to find it in my /Library/iTunes folder (either system or user dir)

ok good luck, let me know how your MMS is in two hours. I've been through all this already with them.

And you didn't have to call AT&T at all and beg to remove anything? I have the Unltd Family txt plan so...

...if I take my iPhone sim and put it my spare Nokia, fire it up and try to send an MMS, a couple hours later, it should take? Is this because the network will recognize that it's not an iPhone and remove the MMS block somehow?

I did the hack so I can tether and have the MMS setting but it hangs at 95%. If I can get MMS to work...I'd be a happy happy gal...

Everyone seems to gloss over this question when people ask it, so I'll ask it again.
Does anyone have a solution for Windows users?

iTunes will not allow you to select the ipcc file for the carrier bundle.
Even after keying in the carrier bundle iTunes hack at the command line.

It also seems that a lot of us do not have the carrier settings option under the network settings.
I guess not all iPhone updates are equal.

I'm on Windows 7 and in iTunes I can't alt-click or ctrl-click but I can shift-click. Upon shift-clicking the Update button, it will only let me select ipsw files. There is a dropdown as my only option and it says "iPod/iPhone software files (*.ipsw)". Lame.

And I can't find this "\Library\iTunes" folder everyone is on about. Is this on the iPhone itself? I can't SSH anymore so the only folder I see in the iPhone is the pictures folder....

That command line code is for Terminal in Mac OS X (from the 9to5mac article). Try closing the window and try again in iTunes. Mine wasn't letting me select the file, and then I did it again and it worked. Otherwise, for iTunes for Windows, you may need to try to get a copy of an older, developer version of iTunes 8.2 (before they blocked changing carrier files, I believe)

The carrier settings option will not show up until you get that carrier file update installed!

That \Library\iTunes folder is where iTunes preference files in Mac OS X are at. You won't have that in Windows.

Again, in Windows, you might need to try to get an older version of iTunes 8.2 (look around online).

This isn't directed at you specifically and not to sound harsh but....

No one gave a crap for YEARS that practically NONE of the cell phones were natively compatible with a Mac. You always had to find some 2nd rate hack or app to get your BlackBerry or Nokia or what ever to sync.

So now that Mac users have a phone for them...I dunno, I don't really feel sorry for PC users trying to make it work on their machine.

Again...so not direct at you specifically. Just venting. If I had an answer for you, I would help :p.

note: you must restart your phone after entering the mms settings for the camera icon to appear in the messages application.

I just got my MMS working and this is how thanks to users in this thread.
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/723378/

Goto this link and enable tethering.
http://www.9to5mac.com/iPhone-3G-tethering?page=

Use this settings (Thanks andrewseely) in settings:general:network:cellular data network

APN: wap.cingular
Username: wap@cingulargprs.com
Password: CINGULAR1
MMSC: mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: 66.209.11.32
MMS Max Message Size: [leave blank]
MMS UA Prof URL: [leave blank]

Then lastly, call ATT to have them change there MMS settings. I specifically said "Can you change my mms settings so my iPhone will receive MMS just like any other phone instead of the link method".

I am now able to send and receive MMS.

Hope this works for you guys instead. Here's a screenshot of the convo between the rep. Notice the AT&T network on the top left.

Here's what I've gathered. This is the correct way to set things up. If you follow the tethering steps it should still work, you may need to quit itunes and re-open it after the terminal step to make sure you can access the .ipcc file.

As for MMS I, myself can see the icon that "should" make everything work. I thought earlier ATT had enabled me, yet it seems to be hit or miss at this point. There is *something on ATT's end that they must do to enable regular MMS, but it still seems like no one knows exactly what that is. And it seems that they have caught on, at least for today. Maybe the next shift will not know better. So for now, enjoy your tethering and if you were lucky enjoy your MMS, otherwise, let's hope someone else comes up with a workaround or exactly what we need to tell the ATT reps to do.

Also it looks like if you try and message multiple people it will default to "group MMS" and not send your group text, even if you don't include Multimedia.

It looks like my visual voicemail has been down, I could access my old voicemails but wasn't receiving new ones. But there's a quick fix. Settings:general:network:cellular data network and under visual voice mail change it FROM "wap.cingular" TO "acds.voicemail"

One more thing if you need to send Group text messages and you keep getting stuck in group mms, just go into settings:messages then turn mms off. Fixed.

As a Mac user, I agree with your statement, but I don't have access to a Mac at the moment. SO my only option right now is my Windows box.

As for the issue at hand, it's an artificial one created by Apple and AT&T.
What pisses me off more than anything is that we have to hack open features that should be enabled by default.
If it's in the OS, let me use it.

After going through this whole saga, I just quit. I got everything on my phone working but actually being able to send MMS. AT&T rep said everything was good on their end, but nothing worked.

Just for kicks I stuck the SIM in my old RIZR. No MMS here either.

Stick in back in my iPhone, and BAM! I can't believe it.

EDIT: After sending and receiving a few, it just stopped. Hahahaha...

Something on AT&T's end is stopping these MMSes after awhile. i wonder if any of these "fixes" will actually still be working in 24 hours.

The reps for me said everything was fine on their end, and yet nothing. There must be some setting they can't change that's stopping some of us.

I saw the MMS opt-out online, and then I saw it removed and replaced with pay-per use (I have an SMS-only plan). Still, nothing. Strange...

Whoa! So I popped the sim inot an old Nokia, fired off an SMS. No prob. Thought, I'd try to send a pic to myself on the Nokia. Hey! It worked on both sides!

Pop the sim back into the iPhone expecting to wait til tomorrow...but I'm impatient and so I tried it.

I can tether, my visual VM works and now, I have MMS...

This is all thanks to the nerds, hackers, impatient SOB's and entitled mofo's that make this forum so great!! I'm glad to be a part of this group. lol
