Dropped my iPhone 5s once, in its 'protective' Apple leather case. Total screen shatter.

It certainly CAN happen in the case. Depends how you drop it and whether the screen itself contacts an object directly. But from experience I can say that the Apple Leather Case has completely prevented damage when I've dropped the phone a number of times. It's always hit a corner or the back, which is protected.

It interesting that we never hear about drop tests for any other consumer product.
Has anyone ever heard of a drop test for:
Cameras
Watches
Binoculars
Blenders
Flashlights
Eye glasses
Dinner plates
Drinking glasses
Vases
Clay pots
Home stereo equipment
Electric toothbrushes
Hair dryers
Etc
Etc

These iPhone drop tests are dumb.

Bottom line: You drop it, it breaks. And if it doesn't, you're extremely lucky.

I've never seen anyone carrying a blender, home stereo, or hair dryer around with them on a daily basis. I've seen plenty of plates, drinking glasses, vases and clay pots break. The more you use them, the more likely you will drop them. And they break. Glass isn't the ideal material for the back of a phone.

In which case (no pun intended) having a glass back at all on the iPhone 8 is irrelevant.

I don't understand why some people don't use a case... but they don't.

It's irrelevant from an aesthetic standpoint, but it does facilitate contactless charging and probably better cell/wifi reception as well. I'm good with that.

Maybe I'm an outlier, but in owning every iPhone since the original (minus, 5, 5C, and SE), the only time I ever cracked an iPhone was from physically throwing my naked iPhone 4S on concrete as a reaction to seeing a bee on my shirt while talking on the phone.

A breakable glass back all so they could include wireless charging which the vast majority of people will never use....

<sarcasm>After all, there are only two possible materials to use for a cell phone case: glass and metal. It's not like there's a more durable, nearly RF-transparent case material that has been used for decades.</sarcasm>

You that company that makes money BY SELLING INSURANCE ON PHONES found in their TOTALLY IMPARTIAL test that iphones break? I am shocked, lock up Tim Cook! Well done, macrumors.

Who cares, really? I ALWAYS keep my phone in a case. The Apple leather one fits perfectly, looks great, and has saved my phone from ANY damage after about half a dozen drops onto concrete since I got the phone a year ago (and I'm careful with my devices, but s**t happens).

Yeah, carrying the phone "naked" may look and feel nice but the average person WILL break it at some point. It's inevitable. Just get a case and your phone will probably be fine.

I agree. I loved the iPhone 6's looks so much, I tried to carry it bare. But then I nearly knocked it off the end table onto the floor, and I got that nice leather apple case.

They should've hired Naomi Campbell to see if the phones survive when they're hurled at a servant's head.:)

Personally I think the person in the video should drop the iPhone 8 and Galaxy 8 into a volcano pit, and then jump inside the pit to retrieve them to see which one handles the heat better... oh he'd fry instantly? ooops. Some things he's gotta do in the name of science!

glass breaks, film at 11pm.

sigh.

Thank God! Captain Obvious reporting on the scene... any other tidbits we already know that you think we don't?

If only there were some thing you could put over your phone to protect as you carried it around all day. Like, some kind of, I don't know, what is that called, a case for a phone? Yeah if only those existed...

Were you aiming for the Bee or just decided to throw your phone?

Yep, my next case will be the Apple Leather Case. I used to get the slim "hard plastic" cases, but when you dropped the phone, the impact on the hard plastic transferred directly to the phone. The leather case is a softer "absorbing" material, and so much of the impact will be absorbed by the leather case itself.

there is absolutely no difference in this glass compared to every other version of iPhone. bunch of crap advertisement.

I'm sure that's why manufacturers make cases for smartphones. I know I wouldn't take the chance of dropping a close to $1000 electronic device and not have some sort of impact resistant case on it. I simply don't have hundreds of dollars to throw away. Just because Apple says they're using the strongest glass ever, it's still glass. It might resist breaking from a foot or so on wood but dropping it even three feet on concrete is absolutely crazy. I would definitely EXPECT the glass to chip or shatter. If Youtubers want to throw their money away that's up to them, but I'm not a Youtuber trying to get clicks. I'm very, very careful with expensive electronic devices as I expect them to last me as long as possible. Hey, I got to get my money's worth out of a product.

For all you people who wanted Apple to build smartphones with capacitive/wireless charging capabilities, this is what you get. A more delicate and costly iPhone. I never asked for capacitive charging but I suppose Apple could have gone with a carbon fiber, plastic or ceramic back but that's not how Apple does things. Plastic would have been ideal but it would have felt cheap. The other two might have bitten into Apple's fat profit margins. So you all got glass. Happy?

well, glass is glass. it breaks.

apple didn't say it doesn't. it's just more durable.
you can criticize apple's decision to go back to glass, but that's all there really is.

Glass breaks when dropped....

In other news. The iPhone also shuts off when it overheats.

I know we're all harping on the fact that a glass laminated phone will break if dropped on concrete or asphalt, but did anyone notice how much it costs to repair a cracked back on the 8 plus?

$400 without AP care. Holy Cow!
