The beauty of CarPlay is it is a consistent interface regardless of which car you're in. I might argue that in itself provides a bit of safety. On the rare occasion where I rent a car I am delighted when it has CarPlay as I don't have to familiarize myself with audio or navigation as it will just work. I would never bother buying a GM anyway, but this would definitely be a turn off for me. I've installed aftermarket CarPlay systems in all my BMWs that were too old to come with it and absolutely love it.

I know car makers really want our data, but this seems over the top. Why not let the vehicle owner choose what software suite they prefer to use in their own car?
but the eu thinks apple has to allow wireless headphones and smart-glasses (if that is a thing) from 3rd party manufactures to use the apple-perfected onboarding and join functions, messages integration and expose all possible functions that are a key differentiator of apple's ecosystem.

“Safety concerns”. Please don't insult your customers like that. Why don't you say the truth? It all boils down to lock in/profit. But I have news for you GM. Your software stinks and I will never purchase one of your cars with your ingrown junk.

I think the auto industry forgot that their terrible software is how we ended up with carplay and android auto in the first place.

Some idiot pencil pusher in managment who is disconnected from reality looked as tesla’s market cap and said “they roll their own software”. I will do the same. PROFIT!!!!

GM is being run by clueless executives.
Believe it or not, margins can be very thin on nonluxury vehicles. GM was paying Apple and Google to use their car apps. Unsurprisingly, they chose to develop their own in-house apps and save some money. Now, its up to the market to decide whether this was a good or bad decision. [EDIT: I was informed GM does not pay for Apple and CarPlay. Thx]

CarPlay is free to car manufacturers from Apple

"I’m told that Apple has no plan in place to make money from the new software. As with the current version of CarPlay, the company isn’t looking to charge users for it — or force car manufacturers to pay to install it."

Never been a Chevy fan. If you want reliability then it is Toyota, Nissan, Honda. If you want American, then the only real choice is Ford.
Check out Lucid.

GM was absolutely not paying Apple or Google

The last "American" car I owned was a used 1986 Dodge Omni. It was a piece of crap and as soon as we had the money, we bought a Toyota Tercel, followed by two Camrys, an Acura Integra, and Honda Accord. None of them gave us any problems until the radio burned out on the second Camry. The dealer replaced it for free due to a recall. We now own two Volvos: a 2013 S60 & a 2022 XC40. Not one single repair on either.

the 2022 volvo has CarPlay, and there's no way I'd buy another car without it. As for "buying American," the XC40 was made in South Carolina. Buying a shoddy product from one of the Big Three just encourages them to keep on building shoddy products. So in my future I don't see a Ford, GM or what is it now; Chrysler/Daimler/Fiat/Stellantis. Is that even American?
GM are trash. They are bottom of the barrel. America doesn’t make premium cars. Ford is best they have and they are above average at best. Japanese for reliability and value. European (largely) for quality.

"GM recently blocked the dealership from offering that service due to safety concerns"

If modifying the infotainment system poses any safety concern at all, I'm not buying that car. The infotainment system should be air gapped to any safety-related function.

Because a Car is not much different then an XBOX. Why doesn't Apple? Control the flow of money through the devices people use.

Honestly, if Musk / Tesla does it and all is well, why can't GM?

GM is 100% right on this! We consumers hate the terrible, unintended consequences for the health and safety of its C-Level executive’s paychecks that occurs when GM has the audacity to let little people, like its own customers, decide which in-vehicle entertainment system they want to pay for.

These little people have been brainwashed by Apple propaganda and the reviews of independent third party’s into believing that GM’s entertainment systems suck. All the reviews that compare the two and clearly declare CarPlay the winner for iPhone are fake news.

That a hard working C-Level executive might get a million or two less in stock options is a violation of the very important, dare I say critical, social safety net that we have in place for these folks. Their pre-existing, multimillion dollar, golden parachutes aren’t nearly enough in today’s America.

You see, requiring these poor C-Level executives to win in a free and fair open market competition by producing an entertainment system that consumers actually prefer over other systems is a bridge too far.

GM simply can not ship these alternative systems in their vehicles while in production nor can they let dealers offer to add them up to be installed in vehicles as a part of the initial purchase process even though it’s perfectly legal and safe to do so after the vehicles are purchased using aftermarket equipment because … umm … because … reasons.

Seriously if GM wants to continue its downward EV spiral then it should keep this up. If EV tax breaks are going away then there are already going to be 7,000 plus reasons not to buy one. I know, let’s add another big reason into the mix and really piss potential EV owners off just for giggles.

Was Mary Bara born an idioic tool or did a silver spool get stuck in her brain when she was a child? This is a straight up dumb decision. I’ve been a loyal GM customer my whole life born into a family with members including grandparents, aunts and uncles who either worked directly for GM, for one of its suppliers or dealerships or in a one of the many Michigan cities that wouldn’t be here if not for the Big 3.

Shame on Gm. My last two vehicles have been jeeps that aren’t tanks which is now what you have to buy to get a gm vehicle with 4WD and with CarPlay. If they ever want me back they better figure out how to get 4WD back into a mid-sized or smaller SUV and they better come with an entertainment system that supports CarPlay or they aren’t getting my money. Not one cent…

I drove a Chevy Equinox EV 2025 renal, and let me share this: Their Google platform is an absolute joke!
the big screen is great but Google Maps was super zoomed out and hard to see while driving, no music or even Google Music, only radio. They have side cameras but do not work when using signaling (useless unless you reverse to park).

if I park and then press on the break the car won't switch off (even when leaving for 30min with the keyfob) unless I drive forward a bit and put it back in the park, total joke

When I dropped it off I told Enterprise heads up there is no Apple CarPlay and they had no idea.
GM has Wana be attitude instead of making a good user experience as Tesla did, I see this approach with legacy companies when they have pretty old minds (baby boomers) making decisions.

The only innovation that I found useful in that car was the vibrating driving seat, left and right independently depending on the warning side.

"you've led" or "you've vibrated"!

It IS possible that these non-OEM units were affecting the vehicle, but it also might be a ruse. This is just survival of the fittest, and GM will eventually realize that they need to support CarPlay.

Any time a large corporation uses words like safety or security as an excuse to deny customers features what they really mean is that it's a threat to their captive income stream. If GM doesn't want to include Car-play or Android Audio then fine. Its a poor choice but fine. If they step in to stop resellers from adding an in demand feature then anti-trust regulators need to step in. Right now its GM but Apple has also been guilty of using "safety & security" words to justify their actions and as consumers we need to collectively push back or thing like this will just get worse. I'm sure they'd love to block gift wrapping on Airpods too so only they could offer the service.
