Here's 12 steps to a competent Gmail app:

  • Faster
  • Always load full messages instead of asking
  • Automatically retry if refreshing the inbox fails
  • Notifications take you to correct spot in conversation
  • iOS 8 actionable notifications
  • Kill the padding around messages
  • Quick reply a la Mailbox instead of typing in the actual message like traditional email
  • Swipe to archive (instead of swipe then tap button)
  • Send + archive button/option
  • Swipe between messages
  • Stop adding '--' before signature and show signature when I'm typing my reply so I know it exists
  • Allow attaching videos from device

Weird because I get it sometimes before it shows in gmail online.

Would you mind outlining exactly what settings you have configured, in both NuevaSyncs control panel area as well as on your phone?

Maybe I'm missing something that's causing it to be delayed?

I just have it as exchange and put the nuevasync server in the settings. Use the username you have for nuevasync as well and not your gmail account.

I can tell you when you pay NuevaSync they move you to their paid severs. They are fast! Beats gmail web and Mail most of the time. Great service!

How unfortunate... Oh well, figured I'd ask anyways.

So what does everyone do? Does anyone even use the native mail app? I can't without push. I've resorted to the gmail app, which never feels as robust of apples app. What a waste of a superior app, but I just can't wait 15 minutes for an email...

Set up a Microsoft Outlook account and set that up on your phone.

Take your gmail account and do Forwarding to that Outlook account.

Pretty simple.

Have you tried emailing them? If this is a free trial, maybe they are slowing you down on purpose.

How do you know that? It seems pretty silly for them to slow down trial users who are trying out their product to see if it works well, which would lead them to buy it.

Currently exchanging emails with them. He's seeing all sorts of red flags with my syncing so he's talking to the engineers to try and figure out why my service hasn't been working properly. If they fix it I will absolutely pay for this service.

Edit:
Seems to be working better now, however there's still the issue of deleting a message from the webmail interface not pushing to the phone. The support person wrote:

Ahhhh... /deleting/. Yes that's because Google's IMAP implementation is
broken.

If you were using any other IMAP server deletes would sync in real-time.
Google for reasons unknown never implemented support for reporting
deletes in the IMAP IDLE response. So we poll for those which is why
they're showing up after a while on the device. Generally it isn't more
an a minor irritation because users don't generally manage their mailbox
from two clients at the same time, although it does crop up as a
question when folks are testing initially.

So if i do go with Nuevasync and use default mail app, can someone help me figure out how to stop emails that go directly to my Spam box from popping up as notifications? it didn't use to do that when using Exchange, so I'm not sure how to best configure my Mail/mailbox/gmail to only get notified when a new email comes in for my Primary/Social/Promotions/Updates buckets.

Also, my Drafts box is no longer showing as a box, how do I get that back?

Do replies go from gmail too? Any config needed to bypass outlook SMTP and your outlook address from being the sender.

Edit
Think I tried forwarding to iCloud once and the replies always went from my iCloud address and of course what I read on my phone isn't marked as read in gmail

You can have Gmail reply from whichever account you choose.

and about read/trash/archive function ????
i mean when you setup forward to icloud or outlook account.

To answer my own question, I paid for the subscription and the email informs you that you're now on the paid servers with better performance. That said, it's been having serious issues syncing this morning.

I would add:
-Multiple choices for new mail sound
-Ability to NOT have message previews on the lock screen
-Allow the app to use the system "BOLD" font choice

I've been on the NuevaSync trial for the past week and it's worked pretty well. I don't think it's as fast as the Exchange support Gmail had, but decent enough. I signed up for premium for the year. Didn't get any email from NuevaSync about being put on paid premium servers though, but I did just pay less than an hour ago.

edit: ah, there it is
Because you have have upgraded from free trial to paid service, the servers that handle your
device's sync requests have changed. This is done in order to provide you with
a higher level of service reliability than would be possible with the machines we
use for our free service users. The transition to the new servers is automatic but
once in a while we see a device that has trouble picking up sync again. If you
do experience any issues with your sync service after upgrading please let us know.

Day #2 of NuevaSync trial. Not entirely happy. Seems ridiculous that they have free servers that are crappier than their paid ones. I'd be happy to pay for the year if I could see that emails were getting pushed instantly (or within 2 minutes) throughout my free trial period. Got a notification 13 minutes late earlier today.

I have tried the Gmail App and CloudMagic long-term and both of them have unreliable/intermittent push notifications.

I'd be willing to pay for NuevaSync, but so far the service has been just as unreliable during this trial as the other two apps I mentioned. I guess I'll consider paying and see if that improves things. Tired of troubleshooting notifications and email apps.

Gmail app has been perfect for me with push since iOS 8...wish I could have my exchange back on reg iOS mail app but I won't pay for something that should be free. Call me stubborn.

What kind of serious issues? Noticed any improvement in the paid premium vs the trial premium?

Some of the time it works perfectly, with mail arriving as fast or faster than on the desktop. At other times, it'll re-sync my entire mailbox, or mail will come in a few minutes later than it should have.

I've been having a back and forth with support, who has at least been communicating well and assuring me my problems have been sent to their engineers. For $30, I'm willing to try this for a year. It's better than Fetch, and in tandem with the Gmail app I think it's not bad considering the other options are not as good.

All good info, thx. Good that they're at least trying to help.

A few things have swayed me toward trying the Gmail app again and ditching the NuevaSync free trial:

-Unreliable push notifications (this is supposed to be their forte!!!)
-Syncing more than a month's worth of mail (i.e., "no limit" option) grinds things to a halt and the folders simply won't load any emails even on wifi (Gmail app handles syncing all of my email without breaking a sweat).
-Moving an email from trash back to the inbox confused NuevaSync and after a great deal of loading the message finally got the email loaded in the inbox but without the original sender address, so if I wanted to reply to the email I would have had to type in the email address again. Buggy.

I'm hoping Gmail app push has become a little more reliable with iOS 8. If it fails me again, then I suppose one of my last options is just paying for the NuevaSync premium. I loved everything about CloudMagic except for the very unreliable and intermittent push notifications.

It's crazy that NuevaSync is charging for a service that claims to be better than the other options for email push on iOS but doesn't outperform them. I would gladly pay their yearly fee if they could provide 99%+ reliability, but it's just not there yet. Seriously, how many years do they need to be up and running to beef up reliability? Pretty sure they have been around for a number of years. But I guess that could be said about the Gmail app too.

Please, report back and let us know if you end up being any happier with NuevaSync than you have been so far.

I just tried them out this AM and went for the pay service. So far its working like a charm!!! Glad that I found this!
