Dropping the price of the phone or dropping the price that the accessories are sold for separately would have also been the right thing to do.

Apple claim they are trying to help the environment, how's about helping out your loyal fans during these very difficult times?
They dropped the price of the EarPods from $29 to $19 and also took the 18w usb c adapter from $29 to $19 and boosted it to 20w.

How does anybody watch these folks with all the fake laughter and camaraderie? What a waste of time, but I knew that before I clicked on the video. Haven't watch a minute of this stuff in over ten years. Good reminder why...

Im stilll annoyed they aren't including USB charging adapter. Like yeah, we have a lot of USB-A's lying around, but I dont have any chargers with USBC, ill have to buy one /eyeroll.
I’m the opposite. I don’t even think twice about Apple not including chargers in the box (or headphones for that matter), as I’ve got so many around the house and office, I don’t need more. When I got my iPad Pro almost two years ago, with its 18w USB-C charger, realizing how fast it was, I started buying USB-C to Lightning cables and then additional PD-USB-C charger bricks, so I could have them for travel and office use for charging both my iPad and iPhone 11 Pro Max.

And now I‘ll buy one of the MagSafe charger pucks when the 12 Pro Max launches, but thankfully won’t need to buy additional charger bricks, since I’m stocked up on those.

What you all need to understand is that a tech segment on a morning show like GMA is not intended for techies. Think of the least tech savvy person you know and that's basically who they're talking to. It's just, "Look at the new iPhone! It's fast and it has pretty colours! Ooh, ahh!" It's for the people who wouldn't have even known there's a new iPhone otherwise, not people like us who can already tell you how many pixels are in the display and how many cores the GPU has, etc.

Thank you!

All these comments slamming GMA... have they ever seen any morning show? They're not for us tech forum readers.

Also... do other phones get this kind of coverage?

GMA gets over 3 million viewers every morning. Did they feature the Galaxy S20 or pixel 5? That might have boosted sales for them.

Does Apple truly believe we believe that they are doing this primarily for the planet? They are removing two components from one of their top selling product families which saves them resources from manufacturing to distribution. Are consumers seeing any of those savings, or is feeling good about the planet food enough?
Only Tim Cook can answer your fist question and I don't think he has an account on these forums. They are removing two components from one of their top selling product families which saves them resources from manufacturing to distribution and reduces the environmental impact. Are consumers seeing any of those savings? I think so because look at the significant improvements from the iPhone 11 to 12. OLED and 5G. Samsung charges $100 for 5G alone so that is more than double the cost of the earbuds and adapter.

I think you're in the majority and your iPhone will be one of millions of adpaters that will never be manufactured and shipped due to Apple's decision.

People complaining about the review ... the typical GMA audience member is not on a tech rumour forum complaining about about the lack of 120 Hz on the new iPhone ...or even know what that is.

She only gets a couple of minutes so get to the basics - size, colours and camera. She wasn’t about to do a teardown or conduct benchmark tests.

Give her a break folks!

It can be both. But you have to see through the marketing PR spin.

This new iPhone 12 has a higher end cost to us ($130 more than iPhone 11), saves apple money on power bricks, saves apple money on headphones, saves apple money on packaging materials, saves apple money on shipping (they can now fit two times as many iPhones in a shipping container from China.)

Yes, there is an environmental impact benefit, but the true benefit is for apple shareholders.
I agree but what makes the financial one a "true benefit" and not the environmental benefit not true? If I hate Apple I'm going to say it's because Tim Cook is a evil greedy villain and if I love Apple I'll say it's because he cares about the environment. Maybe he's a evil greedy villain that cares about the environment? I mean his motives are irreverent to the positive impact this will have on the environment. If positive change to the environment can be motivated by greed I'll support that. If it's motivated by love I'll support that too!

Wireless charging also isn’t exactly environment-friendly, given its poor power efficiency. I’m not saying it shouldn’t exist, just that there’s some cognitive dissonance with Apple regarding the environment topic.
Fine - but is anyone in a position to let us know the actual efficiency of a MagSafe charger used to charge a 12?

Exactly this! I can bet a huge majority of my friends have no clue what the refresh rate is on their phones. Non tech people do not care about this. This is one thing that drives Android techy people crazy. People buy iPhones and Android phones to have a phone and it works.

Nice infomercial!
Now, what a failure the $59 wallet it's...100 magnets and you have to manually move it to the correct position?
Even after that it remains slightly twisted to the right 😒

I could almost reference my last comment as a reply to this. If you're one of the few that wants to know the power efficiency of a specific charger rest assured there will be a YouTuber that will show it. Most people aren't that techy.

If I'd been pricing them, I might have even bumped the list price down by like $10 or something--call it $989 instead of $999--to try and sell that it's an ecological decision rather than a nickel-and-dime one.
In the longer run, having neatly spaced and round-ish price points is probably a larger marketing benefit for Apple than having to deal with the backlash of people feeling the removal of these items should have resulted in a price reduction. But then again, these neat price points really only exist in the U.S. which by now represent only about 40% of their sales volume.

I must know how many times did you have to watch this to notice then watch again to make screenshots. The exact position of the wallet must be really important to you.
One time to notice, and the second time I scrubbed to the part to make the screenshots. If you notice the wallet in the first screenshot, it's covering the camera...

GMA sells paid spots? I wouldn't think so but anything is possible.
ABC is owned by Disney, who’s largest shareholders, I believe, is still Steve Jobs’ estate? Sooo, maybe?
Also to add to the preposterous “it’s the environment!” line Apple is feeding us, wouldn’t it be smart for them to have a program to trade your old USB-A brick in for 25%-50% off the new USB-C? “Take it out of your drawer, and Apple will recycle it, so it doesn’t end up in a landfill”.

Yup. The Buttload of USB-C chargers in my home is overwhelming so I‘m glad that Apple is doing something for the Environment by removing the power brick. /s

You don’t need to use a USB-C charger...a USB-A one will do just fine. I know I have at 5+ Lightning cables hanging around, and at least as many charging bricks of various sizes; I actually threw a few out recently.

Most mid-older working adults do yeah. Most younger people don’t as they don’t watch live TV at all. They watch YouTube and they’ll know MKBHD. My kids have no idea what morning TV even is but they can name every YT channel under the sun.
This is stereotypical but TV is mostly a 45-50 and above. I am a gen-x and have not watched broadcast TV in .... 15 years. I still watch a lot of “TV” just nothing broadcast. Maybe I did at a hotel or something ... not sure. Agree about YouTube and the next gen. Personally I dont think MKBHD is a great reviewer but I know who he is and my kids would never think of going anywhere but YouTube to see a review for a product.

Me too but we all know the average consumer has no clue who MKBHD is. Everyone in the USA knows what Good Morning America is. Apple looks at this as free advertising.
It's free advertising for Apple and viewers for GMA.

The type of discussion GMA will have on the iphone 12, will be quite different than other youtube reviewers, who will nitpick and compare every nuanced aspect of the iphone 12 against other iphones and Android phones. What ensues afterwards is a bunch of heated discussions about what matters, what doesn't matter, what is actually right, what is actually wrong, how it's overpriced, etc. Past history is a good arbiter of the future when it comes to this.
