Agreed, but if Apple loses this battle, it could be the end of Mac OS. Personally, that would suck.

Chrome OS will be a genius child, Linux is still a teenager and Windows is an aging war veteran. I would rather not use any of them, yet.

You realize that Chrome OS is based on Linux, right?

All these people quoting MS death are guilty of wishful thinking. Don't forget that just before iPod was released, your beloved Apple was not in the best financial shape. MS has posted a decline in sales after 34 years, how long did it take Apple to do that?

I have to say what you just said is blatantly wrong. I hate to use a wikipedia article but it is the most succinct. Basically, you're spouting MS propaganda.

Additionally, the iPod was somewhat of a niche device until about G3.

So it was iMacs that returned them to profitability, but I've seen it stated on this very board that iPods saved Apple. I'm not just quoting MS.

The point stands, they went through a downturn.

I find that people often fail to fully understand the significance of the word fitness when applying the theory of evolution to other things. Generational timescale is another important thing that is misunderstood. It's kind of like saying a kid putting his hand on a stove and discovering it to be hot caused him to evolve because the most fit kids don't. The claim fails for many reasons.

It was meant as an extrapolation and an example, not a direct relationship.

Just watch, and wait, and learn.

Survival of the fittest isn't a theory which applies only to biology. You get to watch corporate entities adapt and evolve, or slowly go extinct.

I'll use smaller words next time, K?

There's nothing wrong with your assumption. It's the fact that you think Apple and/or Google will be the one's to do it. I mean they might but it's pretty unlikely.

You're right, they might not be the ones to "administer the death blow", to use a much overused and inaccurate phrase.

I mean that the struggle will now intensify. If Google and Apple will be at loggerheads with each other, they will be throwing a lot of resources at new innovative devices/software/technology. MS will be forced to kick up its game as well, or suffer.

Now, to be fair, it could be that Apple and Google exhaust themselves in their struggle, and MS moves in to pick off the weakened survivor. But that's not too likely either... I hope.

Microsoft has enough money in the bank to buy EVERY startup company in the valley - and the only sort of innovation that you can expect from a corporation as big as Microsoft, Apple or Google is the purchase of innovative startup companies.

Microsoft owns the desktop, more than half of the server market and they also have well positioned embedded and mobile platforms and even one of the biggest game consoles. But more importantly, neither Google nor Apple are players in the corporate market, but Microsoft is huge in that lucrative segment.

No, Microsoft won't be eclipsed anytime soon.
QTF! A-freakin'-men!

Well, now we can let the competition begin! But what about the good "friendship" Apple and Google have? Is Apple going to switch to Yahoo! Maps!!!??? xD

After Apple's shameful action on Google Voice, I think it would be a disgrace for anybody to sit on Apples board. Even more for a Google CEO. As soon as Google Chrome OS comes out, I will consider it on some computers here instead of OS X. I personally can't switch yet because I need some professional applications, but my loyalty to Apple is gone. I will switch anytime I can.

The big difference between Apple, Microsoft and Google is that both Apple and MS make money on cloud computing and Google does not.

Apple may have fewer email accounts on MobileMe than Google has on GMail, but Apple makes more money from those email accounts. Do they make a profit from MobileMe, I don't know, however I'm sure they're breaking even, meanwhile companies like Google are hemorrhaging money on free services in an economy where Ad sales are down...

Having market share only really matters if you make money from that Market Share. Dell has greater market share than Apple, however Apple is making more money per computer than Dell.

What? No it doesn't stand. You didn't give any evidence. You just stated an opinion to refute a recorded fact. You're going to need a lot more evidence to support your "the iPod saved Apple" argument.

It was meant as an extrapolation and an example, not a direct relationship.

Phew, I thought you may be one of those nutsy social darwinists that are popping up more and more (you can't swing a dead wicca cat in the Huffington Post without hitting one). The lack of logic is just maddening.

Awww, I just made it too.

I guess it does look like I am giving the evil eye. :D

For posterity. . . http://upc.*************/uploads/avatars/MyEyes-play3a75.gif . . . since I change 'tars regularly.

Put an MS logo in the iris and the evilness with be truly inspiring.

The difference between Apple and Microsoft is that Apple does whats trendy and cool, and Microsoft does whats boring and marketable to the masses.

Apples secrecy and control issues will be its downfall. Consumers are slowly seeing that Apple's whole "Microsoft is evil" ideals are really false. Apple has become Big Brother. it took 25 years for Apple to become 1984

Good God! What did Apple do that was shameful. At the worst protect their product, their shareholders and their business partners.

Are people really that stupid to trust Google not only with their emails, but also their voicemails.... They're storing way to much personal information for my liking.

Not really surprised at this. I think both Jobs and Schmidt knew that the time would come when Schmidt would have to resign. I just hope that their long-time partnership doesn't go with it and that Google keeps making good stuff for the iPhone and that Apple gets its head out of its *** and realizes that Google is a better partner going forward than AT&T ever was.

Nutsy, yes, I've been accused of that. "Social Darwinist", though? That's a bit harsh. Isn't that like using Brownian Motion to determine where to place the bathrooms at a football stadium?

That's the trouble with simile on a forum... I can't add the sardonic inflection required to carry it off properly.

I'm surprised that he lasted this long. If you have to sit outside a board meeting more than twice in a year, it's time to think about resigning. I suspect he was outside the meetings more than he was inside.

I thought he would've just resigned when Google announced Chrome OS.
Of course Apple wasn't working/announcing the development of a netbook just then. So maybe this resignation substantiates the Apple tablet a little more.

i don't know what would be more innovative apple and google working together or them competing. cause from what i have seen in the past, apple has done alot better with partnerships, not competition.
