That's a good thing. It means when people wish to switch the friction is much lower. With the way iOS is nowadays, Android is looking more and more appealing. It took Apple 6 months just to make iOS 9 performance on par with 8.4.
In most cases it will take 6 months or more to receive the latest version of Android on your phone if you get it at all.

I've owned more than enough Android devices to know those performance issues on "older" hardware exist on that end as well.

That's why Apple can't offer the same services without mining data as much. FTFY;)

People want Siri to do things beyond pedestrian tasks like the oft' quoted "set timers". Those advanced features require a give an take between vendor and customer. For all the privacy hand wringing on this site, most of the people I've engaged 1. Can't address the issue intelligently beyond saying the word 'privacy' as if it's an all encompassing blanket. 2. Don't know the difference between selling ad space and selling customer data. 3. Don't realize Apple does the same data mining. Siri could be much better. I have no doubt about that. Sometimes I think Apple uses the privacy as an excuse not to upgrade Siri to a fuller potential.

This i will rate adamantium logic.

True. In the end, it's good to have equal competition hopefully spurring each other on for greater innovation for our end benefit! I personally own an iPhone 6 Plus and a Nexus 6. I love them both for different reasons, and both are great devices.

Except what Amazon did blew everyone's mind. Google scrambled to catch up. We'll see if they did. Apple is, add usual lately, nowhere to be found in the tech world. They don't seem to be finding time to take off hanging out with the fashionistas at their fancy parties where they seem to be hanging out all the time and getting super fat. Who's fatter, Ives or Balmer?

The fact that Apple's services aren't available on Android doesn't make the feature or idea any different. Both companies have a very different earning model and that's the only reason why Google services are so readily available on iOS. On top of that there are more than enough third-party cross-platform solutions today that do the pretty much the same thing as those apps introduced by Google. It's just more of the same.
Yes it does. It makes the service significantly worse as you cannot enjoy the perks of interacting with people on other devices.

There is an alarm clock built-in in iOS's Clock app. What's wrong with that? No need to start it manually or ... start it at all. Set the days/times and forget it. And to see the time when the phone is charging - one simple push of the home button. Much better than an always-on screen.

Yes, when I wake at night fumbling in the dark to find the Home button is so much easier than just seeing an always on clock face. You know, like we've had for decades.

I don't use Android anymore, but the Nexus 6P is looking tempting.

LOL. This is the most reaching post so far.

Provide concrete examples of "actual services" that already have what Google presented today.

Everything they presented!

Allo = iMessage, etc.
Duo = FaceTime, etc.
Daydream = Occulus, etc.
Google Now = Siri, etc.

Google Now uses OpenTable, which Siri already used

That thingy on the messaging App ========= Facebook M

100% ridiculous, what's new!?

Google can't innovate? Gee, where have I heard that said about Apple before? Oh, right here on MR!

AndroidRumors?

If Google can't innovate, how come they are leading AI, VR, and search?

Are they?

IBM Watson beats them easily!

IBM beated the most complex game, not just won over human's patience:

Show me a search engine as good as Google.

Google is a biased search engine, that shows you first the results that favor Google, and shows you ads first.

Stop hating on a company that influences people's daily lives just like Apple with no factual reasoning.

The subject is Google!

That's why I use Sleep Cycle. iOS's alarm clock is so basic it lacks a clock that's always on. I mean, come on. The SC app tracks my sleep using the microphone and I just have to flip the phone over to see the time at night. Apple does neither. And they want people to sleep better? Start by implementing these features.

I own the NVIDIA Shield K1, it's one of the few existing tablets that got Android M all the way up to the latest version. I like it a lot, especially for the price. I do however prefer many of iOS' build-in apps over those on Android. Also iOS does feel a lot more polished in terms of interface smoothness. On the other hand I like the fact I can install a third-party launcher on Android. Both OS's definitely have their unique pros and cons. :)

4: Rather conveniently forget or ignore the fact that FaceBook, free apps and games, and a ton of other things used also collect your data...

Most people I interact with own iPhones and those that don't have WhatsApp. Problem solved and no need for any of those Google services they just announced. Long story short: These Google apps just don't offer me anything substantially new that I already have today.

I have to say it was a hugely disappointing keynote. Very little of substance or interest to me. I'm not sure where Google is going atm, they seem lost without direction.
The conference is for developers and is not meant to be "hey consumers look at this cool stuff."

Siri would need to actually understand what I say consistently to be conversational. Siri in current form is worthless.

Do you talk with marbles or food in your mouth? Do you drive with the windows down? I don't exactly have a clear distinctive voice but Siri understands me very well. It wasn't so hot originally but has gotten better and better.

As for all the predictable fellatio of Google's incredible announcements: where's the beef? Remember when Google Glass would revolutionize the world?

Google really is clueless when it comes to messaging and social platforms. It wasn't long ago they unveiled Hangouts and claimed it would be THE messaging platform. Now it's all but dead and instead of improving it they're going to launch yet another messaging app and for whatever reason a separate video calling app. The best part is that they both have terrible names. Allo and Duo, seriously? The guy presenting couldn't even keep them straight. At one point he called Duo Allo. These apps won't get adopted and will be dead within two years.

Will have to see what WWDC brings, the bar has been set higher though. Siri for one has a long way to go to reach parity.

I think this is a huge deal honestly.

For a long time, we've known that Google Now >> Siri, but they just didnt figure out a way to get people to actually use it. Google's algorithms for finding answers are simply superior, there's just no way around it.

Now that this device can pair with a TV (with chromecast if it isnt android capable) I think its a huge selling point. People are going to be motivated to buy it in lieu of a sound system because of how highly capable it is.

Want to play music off a youtube playlist? done
Want to watch basketball highlights? done

They can also integrate the system to increase their revenue. I could definitely see them partnering down the road with different streaming services other than their own. Not just video, also music.

This is big because just as people are going to get massive options through this system. They wont be locked into itunes to play music. It can pair with youtube. It can pair with google music. Your TV may have netflix built in, if not, you can use chromecast. etc etc etc. And not every customer is going to use the device the same way. Someone might just be looking for the youtube playlist capabilities. Whereas someone likes the chromecast pairing.

If apple releases something comparable, you're going to be locked into playing through itunes, grabbing stuff from icloud, using bing. Using Siri's inferior search and answer capabilities.

Google let Apple build Siri, sit around for a few years, and overnight just crapped on it with 1 fell swoop.

Another big thing is that this is going to draw people away from Apple's ecosystem. I can definitely see someone/peoples falling in love with the device:

"I love that you can play music without touching a button"
"I love that you can have it read back your calendar when you ask"
"I love that I dont need my phone to use it"

This device is going to draw people into android... make no mistake about that.

I still can't believe how bad Siri STILL is. Cortana/Google understands me perfectly and I don't have an accident. I might as well be speaking a foreign language with Siri.

The Voice User Interface, or VUI (TM) is the future. Apple dropped the ball, left the ballpark, and went to the afterparty where they're still guzzling martinis.

Even my crappy german accent it understands surprisingly well. English was never a problem. There are some specific words it has a problem with, but assistants have this issue with some words.
