So the iPhone isn't as good as something from the 90s?

GV really is awesome. The only people that seem not to think so are those who either don't know what it is or who haven't used it. I do everything through GV b/c (GV + ATT a-list == unlimited cell minutes). Going through the website, while cumbersome, is worth it for no minute usage calling. And just to stop the common misunderstanding, GV is voice from your phone to google. From google to whoever else it is data/VOIP.

Other nice features of GV is that it rings all your phones. If you're at home you can pick it up there, if you're on the computer you can pick up your Gizmo5, etc...

Then you have VM transcriptions (which is what I originally through VVM was) that are getting quite good.

Incoming calling management. Don't want work calls after 6pm, you can tell GV to do just that and route all those calls to VM.

GV is what phone service should have been like years ago and it's a shame Apple doesn't want it on the iPhone.

I said nothing about the iPhone being compared to anything from the '90s.

I have Google Voice. Multiple accounts actually. I understand it just fine. I think most users will not find it as useful as you do. If you're a geek with multiple contact points, and want to fuss around with all those options, fine, but for the common folk, GV is not the killer app.

As far as the no-minutes used because of AT&T A-list...last I looked, in order to get an account that was A-list capable, I would have to spend more money than I already do for more minutes than I use now (I have plenty of rollover minutes each month). If you're on TMobile or someone who gives you a Fave-5 or the likes without having to have a high priced family plan on to get unlimited calling to a specific number, than GV is a nice price hack as you describe, but if you're someone who spends less than 450 minutes per month on the phone during "prime" hours, GV as a minutes hack is useless.

Enjoy GV, but acknowledge that its usefulness to individuals varies widely on how much they use the phone to begin with, and with that in mind, I stand by statement you chose to quote - GV is not the be-all to end-all that a small but vocal group of people make it out to be.

No need

Your argument runs counter to reality. If not everyone wants all those Apps, how the hell is it that the App Store's growth is so explosive, with no end in sight? Who's buying all those apps?

Actually, your argument runs counter to reality... I modified that sentence two minutes before you posted yours.

But my main point was that apps are not that important for a very large audience.

this seems like its the iphone's biggest challenge yet. The Droid, the G1, the pre and all those other phones had nothing on the iphone, it seems however that the nexus one destroys the iphone on specs. i'm just waiting to see what apple brings to the table with the next iphone.

The Nexus One is quad-band and supports HSDPA. How can it not support AT&T's 3G network? Is AT&T using something thats not 850, 1800, or 1900? Are they using something not HSDPA or HSUPA?

What am I missing that prevents this phone from using AT&T's 3G data?

AT&T uses UMTS/HSDPA 850/1900

T-Mobiles uses UMTS/HSDPA 1700/2100

Nexus One currently only supports UMTS/HSDPA 800/1700/2100

Doesn't matter. Bad UI, no multitouch, poor ecosystem compared to Apple's, a fraction of the apps.

200 more mhz and a flash don't mean sweet f all if the software isn't right. And it'll mean even less after the next iPhone update.

Tell that to the consumers handing Apple those crazy numbers and buying all those Apps.

Its got multitouch..!

buying or d/loading??

iFart and Monkeyswing rock...! :(

Good Point but one problem,,,, Macs or Computers have a much higher profit Margin than phones or MP3 players,,,,especially Macs. I do agree that it doesn't have to kill the Iphone to be a success. There is room for all of them cause people have different needs. As much as I love my Apple products and always want them to be relevant I would not want Apple to be the only player in Town. Heck if anything Apple being the underdog has always forced them to be more creative and has given us of great products. Sorry Steve Jobs Competition is always good......LOL :)

your joking right??

Ipod's have a profit margin in the 60's (%)

i love seeing all the iphone fanboys saying how iphone is still the best. Personally i think that the iphone home screen is pretty darn ugly.

With that said. If google had invented a computer to compete with macs, id be bashing the computer but excited it has been made.

CDMA and GSM versions

I think it is funny that Motorola and HTC seem to have no issue making a CDMA and GSM version of the same phone, but we have been told time and time around here that it is too hard for Apple to do the same thing. They just can't make a phone that will work on CDMA carriers because it is too hard or would cost too much.

Android gives you handset and carrier choice. In my opinion, the Nexus One is actually a closer iPhone competitor then Motorola Droid competitor if you look at the form factor. The Droid has a very different form factor with a slide out keyboard and will appeal to a different kind of customer. The Nexus One has a very similar design to the iPhone and is going to appeal to people that want a virtual only keyboard.

Very meh for me. I guess the unwashed masses will like it because you can buy it unlocked but otherwise it is very "me too" to the iPhone and doesn't bring anything new to smartphones.

You still don't get it. Some people like me must have 32 gb memory. If they bought the Nexus One today what can they do?

get a card, get a couple of cards they are soooo cheap online.

you could have your movie card, music card or buy a 32gb and have the equivalent storage as an iphone. i don't mind swapping cards, i actually prefer it.

Does anyone know if I bought one (im in the UK) and wanted to use my current o2 contract SIM if it would work or not? Really dont understand the GSMA thing you lot in the US have.

Cheers.

I think it's funny how Motorola and HTC are cannibalizing each other's profits everytime Google updates Android OS

Nexus > Droid > Eris

Motorola's turn to put out something new

I will admit Android 2.1 looks a lot better. But it still has a ways to go, and it still is a fractured mess of a platform no matter what the OS looks like! It is a good thing they are really aiming at Windows Mobile, not the iPhone. Why don't people realize that?

Either way, it still keeps Apple on their toes which is good. I am VERY EXCITED for the 27th to see the tablet and what iPhone OS 4.0 has in store! :D

32 gb microSD is not currently available

You must have not read my previous post.

You must have not read my previous post.

i read it. did you read the posts following some of your previous posts? no one gets your point. if you ordered the phone and the card on the same day you would probably get them on the same day so no down time. what is your point?

Do you find this accurate?

Motorola's turn to put out something new

It's a strange thing Google is doing, marrying one hardware company while having flings with the others. Careful, Google - women get jealous.

Wonder how Motorola Droid sales will do now that people know the Nexus One (*puke* that name sucks) will be on Verizon in the spring?

Probably not well.

Google made out with Motorola and then punched it in the face. Interesting strategy. Sometimes I really don't think Google knows what it's doing outside the search business.

Show me where you can get a 32 gb microSD card.

what else can you add to a phone these days. the only other revolutionary thing they can add is if the phone had a hand that tickled my balls while i walk down the street.
Great, give the Muslim terrorists a new thing to stick in their underpants.:D

I booked a flight to NYC in March with Continental for around 180 € (round trip).

You're not really trying to argue about flight costs being part of the price of the phone here, are you? This is going nowhere. If you're in the US, take US prices. If you're in the EU, take EU prices.

You're right, you can't walk into an Apple store and buy an unlocked iPhone. You'd have to unlock it yourself. If you're willing to board an airplane to get the phone of your choice, that shouldn't be a dealbreaker...right?

Compared to the 3GS, while the Nexus is a very good phone it isn't much different baring a speed boost. If you want to go further back it isn't a huge step away in terms of user experience from the 3G. A phone we saw release a year and a half ago.

That must be quite worrying because while the advances from the 3G to 3GS were nice.... you could tell Apple were holding back because they simply didn't need to do all that much.

By the time we hit the next iphone announcement.... will they need to do much more again? I think we'll see a new case design, faster processor, more ram, better battery life, better camera, larger OLED screen and of course the next firmware update.

That's enough to put them on top again quite easily... thats if they were ever toppled.

I'm a bit disappointed, Apple can do much more but they don't have to innovate at the minute. This isn't a step in a new direction, it's just another Android handset with a faster processor.

The wait continues.....

iPhone 3GsII. Even faster than the 3Gs, 10x more hype. Seriously, the iPhone needs a real makeover, and I don't see Apple willing to give it a chance since if it goes wrong, their reputation will be ruined.

Google could do something 'new' like this since this is their first venture into the mobile market (no, ignore Android altogether), they have no reputation to keep hold of.

New??????

Looks an awful lot like an iPhone to me. With android loaded. Real groundbraking design there. Real fresh idea.

The only thing that has is multiple carriers, which would be nice for the iPhone to stop all the bellyaching. I

2 things that the NexusOne does better than the iPhone off the top:

  • Multiple carriers

Not really a point right now. The CDMA version isn't released yet (they said March, right?) and it's not really usable on AT&T. So you're stuck with T-Mobile right now, which actually kind of sucks. Their 3G network might be alright in some cities, but if you live somewhere else, you're pretty much busted.

btw, the iPhone can be used with multiple carriers, too. At least outside the US. Or you unlock it.
