So the iPhone isn't as good as something from the 90s?
GV really is awesome. The only people that seem not to think so are those who either don't know what it is or who haven't used it. I do everything through GV b/c (GV + ATT a-list == unlimited cell minutes). Going through the website, while cumbersome, is worth it for no minute usage calling. And just to stop the common misunderstanding, GV is voice from your phone to google. From google to whoever else it is data/VOIP.
Other nice features of GV is that it rings all your phones. If you're at home you can pick it up there, if you're on the computer you can pick up your Gizmo5, etc...
Then you have VM transcriptions (which is what I originally through VVM was) that are getting quite good.
Incoming calling management. Don't want work calls after 6pm, you can tell GV to do just that and route all those calls to VM.
GV is what phone service should have been like years ago and it's a shame Apple doesn't want it on the iPhone.
I said nothing about the iPhone being compared to anything from the '90s.
I have Google Voice. Multiple accounts actually. I understand it just fine. I think most users will not find it as useful as you do. If you're a geek with multiple contact points, and want to fuss around with all those options, fine, but for the common folk, GV is not the killer app.
As far as the no-minutes used because of AT&T A-list...last I looked, in order to get an account that was A-list capable, I would have to spend more money than I already do for more minutes than I use now (I have plenty of rollover minutes each month). If you're on TMobile or someone who gives you a Fave-5 or the likes without having to have a high priced family plan on to get unlimited calling to a specific number, than GV is a nice price hack as you describe, but if you're someone who spends less than 450 minutes per month on the phone during "prime" hours, GV as a minutes hack is useless.
Enjoy GV, but acknowledge that its usefulness to individuals varies widely on how much they use the phone to begin with, and with that in mind, I stand by statement you chose to quote - GV is not the be-all to end-all that a small but vocal group of people make it out to be.
