read engadgets review on the phone. Its nothing special. They say its a good phone, but nothing earth shattering. I really don't think apple is too worried about this.

It's not one phone that Apple should be worried about, it is all of them combined. As has been said, the Nexus One is going to be a Google brand. Expect many different varieties. Some with slider keyboards, some with different form factors, etc. And Google is likely going to put all Android phones in one place for people to look at them online.

Then there's Nokia that is currently working on a 4G phone with Verizon that will launch sooner rather than later. Nokia is clearly not taking the iPhone lying down, but they need to get some heavy hitters in the US market.

And then there's Microsoft that is investing a lot into Windows Mobile 7. You can bet they will dump a lot into marketing and they've been on a hot streak lately for OSes and hardware.

Then RIM will also not be lying down either.

Apple has scaled the mountain nicely, but maintaining their lead will not be easy and one stumble could cause an avalanche. So much of their identity now is linked with small devices, so one screw up and Apple as a whole could suffer massive setbacks.

Because it's another me-too iPhone clone that will be yesterday's news after the next iPhone update, if the interest actually lasts that long. So all the adulation for the Storm, was transferred to the Pre, which was transferred to the Droid, which is now being transferred to the Nexus One, is all for nothing, really. Apple has already captured and owns the Average User. Done. What needs to be understood is that Apple has this market figured out for the next 5-7 years. Locked. The game's already over.

The game is not over my friend...it is never over. Technology does not work like that. Tech is very cyclical. I guess to put it short the game is only over in the fantasies of the fanboys and girls.

I read the quoted material you have in your post...Amazing, Apple folk really believe that. Again I am typing this from my very sleek and capable 15" 2nd Rev Unibody MBP. Nice machine, but I'd be the same guy if I were typing on a PC Laptop.

As pointed out before apple's past updates to the iPhone and its os have been minor or what should of been day 1 things so none of them really have been impressive. I know the truth hurt but really apple has done very little on there updates.
I expect in the next round of updates multi tasking will be added and it will be yet another day 1 update.

It isn't a flip phone because the iPhone is not a flip phone. When Apple makes a flip phone, then suddenly Google will too.

Which is EXACTLY why the first released Android phone was a qwerty slider, just like Apple.

When Apple produced it's phone, it brought touch/multitouch interfaces mainstream and produced an interface for their phone unlike anything anyone else had done. They also made an app store unlike anything anyone else had done. What did Google do? Add a 5MP camera? Big deal.

Google took their approach to make a phone better web connected. The process is open source, and developers have control of the end game. Google is just giving them the proper tools. The phone is evolutionary, vs. revolutionary.

If you ask me, Google is listening to the wants of the consumer, vs. Apple's letting the consumer know what they want. I enjoy using a device with more then one input (touch screen). I know that people with disabilities aren't "mainstream" but there should be devices available to help them have a good experience too.

Yes there should be, but are u saying now that Apple is keeping disabled people out becouse of their touch UI?

This is getting really exciting ;-)

Talking about evolution...

They improved a lot over the last 2 Years and it is a Major success! The way they did it seems to work out for 60 Million or so people around the globe.

Techies like us can say: I need more influence, a more open device.

Most the people just want it to work, and look good. And many want to be part of the "Club" brand is everything in a mass market.

And Androidusers do not forget. You all pay that Openess with all your user data beeing owned by Google. Dnagerous i think.

your joking right??

Ipod's have a profit margin in the 60's (%)

No really I'm not 60% of 300$ iPods or 3000$ High end Macs Anyway very minor. Apple could survive indefinetly on their Computer Market share they did it for a decade and not be considered a failure. I agree though google can do the same , cause they have deep pockets. . Ala. The og xbox. The biggest loser coming In last windows mobile. This will be interesting none the less. I think Apple still holds the advantage write the Software and Control the Hardware,

Not necessarily. But if it doesn't have an Apple logo on it, I'm immediately suspicious. The device is "guilty before proven innocent", and judging by what's come out of Apple over the last decade and what's been copied and churned out elsewhere, a healthy dose of suspicion is certainly warranted, at least at first blush.

From your postings on Appleinsider and Macrumours, as soon as a product has an Apple logo on it, you worship it. A normal consumer would recognize that all companies have awesome products and they also produce lemons, Apple has had its share of lemons. I would have loved to be on these forums when Apple switched to Intel, for all the slagging of anything not apple, it must have hurt so much that Macs are just PCs internally, conforming with the rest of the industry, for all those companies that "copy" Apple, what is your view on the switch to intel?

Thing is, do you actually buy these products or do you just jump on the bandwagon and worship them ignoring the real issues that real customers have?

My last 10 years experience with Apple is something like this..

PowerBook G4 12 " - Awesome, way ahead of anything in its time, only runs on one RAM slot now. Upgrade to tiger whipped all my data. Still one of hte best Apple products

Unibody 2.53 15" - GPU failure, with core shutdowns. Replacement had a faulty trackpad, though I came to a conclusion that I could not stand glossy so Refund

MBA Rev b - Lovely Laptop, my second one I kept, has bloody feint horizontal lines. Awesome style sacrificing practicality at times. Keeper to this day, great for travel.

MBP 17" Matte - Kept the second one (first one had faulty illuminated keys), my favorite Apple product since Powerbook G4. Not an issue with it yet.

Iphone orignal - Love it - Safari crapped out all the time - Lacked too many common phone features at lauch, the Alu back better then the plastic on 3g.

Iphone 3g - Lots of hype but kinda preferred the original - The world does not revolve around this phone not having flash is a real @£!*@&*£ at times

Iphone 3Gs - Like the speed boost - Got it as i needed more then 8GB

Orignal ipod - My fav - kudos to Apple

Ipod Mini - Awesome again - still love it

Ipod nano - original - Died after a year

Ipod nano - current gen - Never used now that i got a Sony x series, sound quality it much more important to me then showing off a apple product on a train

Imac Mini 2.26 - No issues with this one. Great media server

Apple ACD 24" - Crapped out in the first year, logic board replaced. Has yellow tinge

Imac 27 i7 - First one flickered and blacked out, might as well be DOA unacceptable. 2nd one, the CPU fan gone after 3 days - Waiting on the 3rd. Had yellow tinge on both.

Apple has great products, but like all products in the industry they suffer from issues. This concept that they are perfect is total BS, frankly if you have go back 10 years and look at Apple products, Rev A products are anything but fault free. Though you have to be an actual consumer instead of a worshipper to accept this.

So if you are telling me that Apple products are fantastic and that you have never had an issue with them, you are lying or just plain do not buy them. And yes you do annoy the heck out of us actual Apple owners cause you go on and on and on about how they are perfect but us actual owners are suffering some real issues with them. Since Oct 2009 I am yet to receive a working imac 27!!!!

I dig the Droid ads. They are directly targeted at iPhone users. Questions and robot demos are always a plus. How many people really get offended with the Hal-esque eye?

I thought the goal of advertising was "to attract" and not "to not offend?"

Nexus One - Fortifying Shampoo & Conditioner for Damaged and Dry Hair

That's one thing about the iPhone that has always disappointed me: it doesn't give me full-bodied, silky-smooth hair.

I can't believe you people are actually concerned about the name of the product.

Branding is critical.

I Think the Nexus One is not a bad looking phone.

Now there's a stellar endorsement. ;) Reminds me of most of the Windows 7 reviews I read. "Not too shabby." (Microsoft fanboys go wild!)

And then there's Microsoft that is investing a lot into Windows Mobile 7. You can bet they will dump a lot into marketing and they've been on a hot streak lately for OSes and hardware.

How much do you personally know about the design process of this particular phone?

This phone has been specifically stated to have been designed as a collaboration between Google and HTC. In the design world, collaborative design is an EXTREMELY common practice. It seems more then reasonable that Google is calling this the Google Phone because they helped design it.

If you want to get technical, HTC isn't making the hardware either. If the phone was simply rebranded, it would lack the HTC logos.

They had the same level of collaboration in making the T-mobile G1/HTC Dream. This doesn't make it the Google Phone.

No? Game over.

Yes it does. Game on. (iTunes is not quite relevent anyhow).

Wow

Wow. FYL u have really bad luck! LOL. Apple does have great product Maybe it's U. It's amazing how there are only Fanboys for good products Apple, Crackberries, Ford or Chevy, iPods. Never see too many droid , zune or Dell Fanpeople. (; . No offense maybe Apple is that really hot girl that really no good for you.

Actually, it is an issue I have brought up before with the almighty Apple.

Back in the day, Apple used a number of technologies to reach out to everyone. They maintain a number of patents and technologies that help those who need assistance.

Then the iMac was born with it's ergonomically challenged hockey puck mouse.

Since then, I have seen a downward trend where things have gotten increasingly difficult for those with special needs.

- - Hiding ports and power buttons.
- - Minimalist aesthetics
- - Limited input capabilities

As good as the iPhone is I would love to have a freaking Flash, custom wallpaper , and Multitasking ( kinda). Nothings perfect. I'm not changing phones or carriers cause of the droid, don't see it! There isn't anything new or groundbreaking about the nexus one either that will cause that reaction! Reality check. How many people were In line for a blackberry , Pre or Droid? How many people did u see in line for all the Iphone Launches. Apple is doing something right

average data plan for iPhone 109 per month? That is what we pay for a family talk for two iPhones per month – and both have unlimited data.

How are you doing that? The cheapest plan with two iPhone 3G(S) is 120 without any text messages.

I remember the switch to Intel around here. There was a lot of denial and grieving for awhile. Then things slowly changed and Apple became a genius company for using PC spec hardware. If you can't beat 'em join 'em and that is exactly what Apple did. They probably should have given up on the whole proprietary PPC platform years before they did, but finally they saw the light that the other PC vendors saw years before. Intel x86 was always faster in real life, but PPC was faster in marketing.

Apple has copied as much as any other company. The whole smart phone idea was a copied idea. What they did however was merge a phone and an iPod. It was and it still is a genius idea, however Android offers the same user experience, but with more options.

Do you want a choice in US carriers? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want to be able to expand memory without replacing the phone? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want to be able to replace your own battery when it gets bad? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want a choice of handset keyboards? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want a choice of browsers? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want a choice of style and design? Android-yes Apple-no
Do you want a choice between a basic Google Experience phone or one that runs a social networking layer over it (ie-Motoblur IU, Sense IU)? Android-yes Apple-no

Apple doesn't believe the customer is even capable of replacing their own battery. lol Apple believes the customer should take it or leave it. You have to like what they give you and if you don't... bye... go buy another phone.

The biggest advantages to the iPhone is the seamless syncing to iTunes and the App store. Those two things are what keeps the iPhone at the top of the pile. If you took away those things the iPhone would actually be a pretty poor product compared to the Nexus One and the Droid.

Apple believes the customer should take it or leave it. You have to like what they give you and if you don't... bye... go buy another phone.

Brilliant isn´t it. And it works.
How would any other company love to able to do it that way. Create somethging and just throw it out there. Take it or leave it. That is corporate luxury.

And they actually make a fortune with this concept.

So what is the problem. If you dont like it leav it! I´ll keep it. Thats freedom.

display models?

since the phone will only be for sale from google, what do people do if they want to try out a phone before purchasing? will the carriers who subsidize it have display models in their stores? i haven't seen anything about this...

I thought the goal of advertising was "to attract" and not "to not offend?"

So, my tally is maybe one person (LagunaSol) was offended by the Hal-esque robot in the Droid ads. Check.

How many people were offended by the successful Mac vs. PC ads? Attention works!

Again, how do you know this? This is just speculation on your behalf. I am looking at this device and telling you, as a designer, it is more then rebranded hardware like the G1. I know this won't satisfy you, but here is a quote from Mario Queiroz, Google's VP of Product Management.

“To help Android to adapt to the needs of users like you and me, our engineering department sometimes works with partners to speed innovation around Android, but we want to do more. So we asked ourselves, ‘What if we worked even more closely with our partners to bring devices to market that will help us better showcase some of the technology we’ve developed?’ The dictionary definition of Nexus One is a point of convergence. Its that point at which Web meets phone. The Nexus One belongs in an emerging category of devices we call superphones.”

At some point the design process will be spotlighted, but Queiroz explains how the Nexus One came from a closer collaboration of the two companies.

Not even close.

>I am such an expert in GUI design and user experience design that my opinion is the only that matters.

You will now say how the sales and market share and what not of the iPhone turns your opinion as a fact. You are too predictable. Yet, you are still wrong.

Dude, it's an HTC phone. The confusion comes from the initial claims that that Google was gonna be responsible for both hardware and software. Instead what was released was the latest rev OS on HTC hardware. Just like how 2 months ago, the previous rev OS was released on Motorola hardware. The only difference between the Droid and the Nexus One from a business standpoint is that the Nexus One has a new distribution paradigm.
