As an Android fan that definitely made fun of the notch of the iPhone X, I have to say.. This is horrible. Super large notch AND a chin. They really dropped the ball on this one.

I was hoping to get a Pixel 3 this year, but now I don't know. Their smaller version has no notch and "regular" (as in 2017 phone) bezels, I'll probably go for that one.

Notch has one and only one purpose - create an edge to edge display. It does not matter what's inside the notch. To say that a speaker and a camera are not "actual features" is pure fanboyism.

Wow you will say/believe anything to justify your fanboyism won’t you.

Horrible Design.
Google need a slap across the face.

I await with interest the launch event, simple because i want to see what "tech" is in that "Mega Notch" that required it to be that deep.
I can't believe they just made it that deep for no reason.
I just want to hear the reason.

Perhaps what's in that notch, albeit ugly, is something really amazing.
Looks horrid indeed, but still, I'm very curious to find out WHY.

Is this real life. That is seriously laughable, and Apple has to have a patent to prevent an exact copy right?

The low budget blog (no-one reads) validates that you are spewing fake news. Stop trying to rewrite history. Companies copy Apple even unconfirmed rumors are copied as well. Relax. It's not that big of a deal.
Are you saying that the essential phone created by Andy rubin, the android messiah that was released well before the IPx doesnt exist? Lol

They are trying to say that essential heard that Apple were going to have a notch and so copied a rumour. I guess nobody can have any original ideas unless you are Apple.

This is just one of the ugliest pieces of tech I have ever seen. Forget the notch wars, forget the "screen real estate" wars, this thing is just plain hideous. At least the S8 is a beautiful device.

Not sure if someone else has said it, but there's a big chin for a reason. Google will let you hide the notch by placing the same size black bar so the top and bottom's bezel size will match and it will not look asymmetrical.

Still, it's even uglier this year.

I’m amazed at how many manufacturers are copying the notch yet they still have a large bezel / chin on the bottom of the phone. Totally misses the point of it all.

The reason for the notch is one of necessity when designing a display that reaches all four corners of the device and having nowhere to house sensors & camera.

That district design gave Apple something different. You know they have an iPhone.

While I agree with your last statement, it has a big chin because the manufacturing costs to bend the OLED are too expensive for Google. It’s the same for all the notched Android phones. It’s not in the budget.

Wow. The iPhone notch must be at least half the height of this notch. And look at all of the whitespace inside the corners. Makes the iPhone X look appealing in comparison.

Regardless of the budget of the Fast Company, everybody knows that the first smartphone with notch was Essential phone(Android).

What exactly would Apple patent? The size of the notch?

That is really an ugly phone. The notch is ugly, looks uglier if the phone has a chin, and worse if this leak is real.
How quickly people forget those huge bezels on pre-X iPhones. They were way bigger than anything inside them.

I find reaching so low to use the gestures bad UX so I don't mind a small chin alleviating that slightly. The notch however, is bad in every implementation.

I confess to being a Pixel XL owner. I know...booo right. I'm a fan boy I suppose, but one thing I have noticed is that both Apple and Android manufacturers borrow heavily from each other. The primary difference is that, in the US, iPhones have a pretty large market share and roughly half the country only knows Apple. I certainly agree Apple popularized the notch, they were not the first use it. The same is true of many features found on iPhones. When i first saw the iphone x, I chuckled a little that Apple finally broke down and offered a Samsung Galaxy to it's customers. Apple, believe it or not, borrows from a basket of Android devices, Qualcomm and the android OS. Certain Android manufacturers do the same in turn, admittedly some more shamelessly than others. The notch is horrible, whether on the iphone, the Pixel, etc. Both Apple and Google need to realize that we are reaching a point where it's not always going to be better to add more. I would gladly take slim bezels for forward firing speakers. I'd happily take a chin to save a few bucks. It's just not that big a deal as long as they are managable sizes. I'd gladly ditch wireless charging for a more durable aluminum chassis phone. Apple didn't start the edge to edge display push, but they perhaps finished it and now we have the dreaded notch that is somehow supposed to be better than a screen butting up against a bezel. It's not. All these manufacturers are pushing the envelope for the sake of bragging rights, which admittedly sells phones. Is that really what the customer wants? Personally, I would like a durable phone, with a unique design, beautiful screen and running my favorite suite of apps. Sure I can afford a $1200 phone, but do I really want to, when it's fragile to begin with, covered front and back in even more fragile glass, and obsolete in 2 years. So forget all the copying garbage Apple and Google fans alike, it's happening everywhere. Be upset that these phones are pushing profits first and foremost and not listening to customers. They are giving us fragile planned obsolescence at a premium price and expecting us to line up and sceam "take my money!" so we can be the first sucker to get gouged and have the new coolest thing while they hide profits in Ireland, rake in ever higher profits. Just sayin.
