In Spain people buy iPhones and they don’t use or even know iMessage unless there is some weird friend like me pushing them to use it. So I don’t think the iMessage selling point is that compelling for most people, here are used to use WhatsApp and that’s all. Good luck trying to use other app, even telegram. If google want to compete the should release their messages app on iOS even without sms support, only some version of RCS (I know may be almost impossible) and see how many iOS users care.

I think Apple won't support RCS until the carriers insist. Hopefully they do so soon.

It's frustrating that Apple so often pretends Android doesn't exist. A phone is a communication device; it should be able to communicate as securely and reliably as possible with all other phones.
There is no real security in the real RCS. Google added encryption on top of RCS, so that isn't real RCS and now google holds all the keys.

Oh, so you mean to say they're still not done pushing the non-standard Google RCS shtick that they keep on touting? What a surprise. Imagine spending that money on R&D to make a better open-standard instead of doing all of this nonsense.

Seriously, google as so much money for advertising, this is what they decided to spend it on?

Has anyone seen this ad in the wild? Or is it only a press announcement?

For once Google actually cares about your security more than Apple. Read up on the protocol.
Ahahahahhaahah!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAAA
*ahem*

Excuse me.

iMessage is one messaging service. Signal is another. Whatsapp is another. Whatever mashup Google is using in the current business quarter is another.

Their approach to RCS is no different than any other messaging service they've tried to champion. Google is not using "A STANDARD" protocol with RCS. It is using yet another proprietary implementation on top of that so-called standard; a fact that they are trying to lampshade by getting cell data carriers to endorse the protocol as if that was somehow a necessary part of interoperability in messaging. It's not. In fact there are good reasons it shouldn't be.

What Google wants, is what they've wanted every time they've tried this. They want to create a mandatory universal messaging system that has insecurity fundamentally baked into it, so that Google (and to a lesser extent all cellular carriers) has permanent, irrevocable access to a universe of data and metadata around messaging, as well as control over what is and isn't treated as spam or advertising.

What Google is asking, is for Apple to modify iMessage so that it constantly leaks content and metadata about everyone involved in a conversation, all the time, and cedes major decisions about implementation and revisions to its protocol to a "consortium" that essentially has only one other major player, which is ... Google.

There is absolutely no upside to this for anyone but Google.

As for you and your friends, if you're texting someone in iMessage and they complain because they're on an Android phone, tell them to install Signal. Then install Signal on your iPhone. Now both of you are suffering an equal amount of "inconvenience". Vote with your feet. No reason to play into Google's hands out of laziness.

Google is continuing on with its relentless #GetTheMessage marketing campaign in an attempt to get Apple to adopt the RCS messaging protocol. In its latest ad, Google shows off the "iPager," which Google describes as a device that "uses outdated messaging tech" like Apple uses "when texting with Android."

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is a communication protocol designed by and adopted by Google. Google has been pushing Apple to implement support for RCS, but Apple devices continue to support the older SMS protocol. Google claims that Apple is responsible for all the issues that Android and iPhone users have texting one another, including lack of encryption, broken group chats, pixelated pictures and videos, and the green bubbles.

"iPager isn't real, but the problems that Apple causes by using SMS are. Let's make texting better for everyone and help Apple #GetTheMessage and upgrade to RCS," read's Google's video.

Major U.S. carriers and other carriers worldwide have adopted support for RCS, but Apple has no plans to do so despite Google's multi-year effort. Google has used billboards, ads, websites, social media campaigns, and more to get Apple's attention and to try to convince iPhone users to request the feature from Apple, but so far, it hasn't worked.

In September 2022, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that RCS is not a priority for Apple. "I don't hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point," he explained. To one reporter who said he was having an issue texting his mother on an Android device, Cook said "Buy your mom an iPhone."

It is not clear if Apple will ever adopt RCS, but so far, it does not sound like the company has any interest in doing so. If Apple did adopt RCS, it would allow for end-to-end encryption for conversations between iPhone and Android users, as well as higher quality media. Apple already offers these features for the iMessage service that works from iPhone to iPhone.

Those ads are not apple to get the message.Apple always has been a company for third party or major companies to figure things out. Like Microsoft with game pass. Micro buddies had a dispute with Apple then it figured it out thru the browser bro hams. Google got you guys fooled and Apple knows this. Google needs to figure out how to fix it and I believe that on oct 4th they will show the world they made it work with full security, blue on blue etc. they just want the android users to be at full joy when that day come. And hope some iPhone users will jump aboard. Hey look they made I messager secured now!! And with blue bubbles. Just wait

Can anyone imagine Apple saying, “Okay, that ad was pretty clever. You got us. We’ll buckle and give in to the pressure and start using RCS. Thanks for setting us straight, Google!”

The funniest part of all of this is how Apple just doesn’t give a crap. Their iMessage is superior in every way, and the only reason green bubbles are a thing is because of the dopes out there who actually own Android phones. Who cares?? Tim Cook is right. The reporter’s mom was probably just too ignorant to understand why the iPhone is better. The reporter needs to stop being so cheap and buy his mom an iPhone! Problem solved! Everyone I know in the US who owns an Android is a person who always purchases the cheaper option, without giving a thought as to why the more expensive option is more expensive. They should try to remember the old adage…”You get what you pay for.”

But Apple would still use green bubbles to distinguish non-iMessages, and Google would still freak out about that. That's what Google's real issue is.
I don’t think the issue is what colour the bubble is. If the bubble was greeen but offered the benefits of RCS or iMessage, there would be much less stigma around it. Green bubbles are only an issue because Apple insists on making texting with non-iOS devices a terrible experience for everyone.

The messaging is as stupid as ever, but the fake device looks remarkably desirable. I feel like I'd at least enjoy having one on my desk.

Is this… the impression Google was going for with this ad?

While they would like to see Apple change iMessage, the ad isn't really directed at Apple. It's much more directed at smartphone consumers and is attempting to point out another reason why Android is better (in their view) than iOS/iPhone.

Google campaigning to Apple about RCS while Apple couldn't care less always reminds me to this meme…

I haven't read through this entire thread, but this is one of the main “features” I want Apple to add. It’s not just frustrating for android users, it’s frustrating to not be able to send and receive high quality pics and videos with like half of the population. It sucks for everyone but Apples accountants. I’m on team google here, Apple needs to make the iMessage experience better for everyone. This problem affects everyone.

I don’t care about winning some sort of lame corporate pissing match or sticking it to anyone, I just want my stuff to work. Apple is making my user experience on my iPhone worse because messaging with so many people I know stinks because they are purposefully making the experience worse to encourage lock in and that sucks. It sucks for everyone.
Your wants ("I just want my stuff to work") are too simplistic, so Google plays you so Google can ultimately control your data and the resale thereof. Being "I'm on team google here" is self-destructive. Repeat after me: Google is not your friend.

Many, many people here are missing the point. Apple is screwing its own customers by forcing them to have a poor experience with an outdated, unsecured chat standard. Apple can adopt RCS and still so everything with iMessage, but they refuse to move past MMS/SMS.

Apple is also shooting its future self in the foot by pushing group chats across the world in whatsapp and wechat.

This is a bad long terms strategy.

LOLLLLL, okay Apple shill.

Tell that to every Pixel phone I've owned and compare to the amount of iPhones I had to have repaired or replaced in warranty before I switched to Android. Guess how many repairs I've had on each one of my Pixel phones? I'll give you a hint, it starts with the letter Z.
?? Are you suggesting through irrelevant personal anecdote that worldwide data showing iPhones longer lasting is wrong? What are you saying?
