Got a scratch on my S6 screen already!

Yeah, I mean obviously they’re not just gonna throw out the returned watches. They will refurbish them and sell them at a discount or use them as warranty or AppleCare+ replacements. Processing the return and replacing the damaged components still costs money. And costs are always going to be passed on to the consumer so the business can stay profitable. That’s just how business works.

I'd doubt that. It takes quite a bit of effort to heat and remove a screen on these devices and then clean off the glue inside. If that's (If it can be?) automated - then, sure they might... But when you're dealing with the volume Apple does - I'd bet they don't. Apple makes it harder on themselves to make it harder for their customers.

I asked my wife this evening if she’d ever scratched the screen on her Apple Watch and her reply was that she ‘didn’t know’ .

I took a look at it out of curiosity.

I guess she enjoys her watch without worrying about it.
My wife's is just the same! So I don't draw her attention to it, and she loves the watch. But the scratches would seriously bother me! I can see the real problem lies with me...

I have an Apple Watch 3 that was in pristine condition. I only wear it SLEEP - and it's scratched.

Admit it. Ion-X is a joke.
From my experience it doesn’t scratch easily in normal use so that is the only thing I will be ‘admitting’. I’ve provided a picture of my daily worn S5 already.

Well, in fairness, your scenario is not exactly a very good one. You could’ve easily scratched your watch in your sleep inadvertently on something that you weren’t aware of. And you want to blame that on the Ion-X Glass? That sounds more like ‘user error‘ to me.

Not to mention scratching the glass in a soft bed is beyond absurd and sounds completely untruthful.

I scratched my Watch in bed when I adjusted my pillows and it touched the wall, so that's definitely possible

All companies account for returns and in Apples case they are such penny pinchers. So don’t feel bad to get that watch swapped out without a second thought.

The Milanese loop attached to your watch in the picture is what caused the scratches. Get rid of that band if you don’t want scratches. You should have never put a Milanese band on an aluminum watch. That band also scratches the SS models.
Isn’t that mainly for the black version because of its DLC coating? I have a space grey aluminium S4 and I like the Milanese loop but because of the scratching I decided to buy a knockoff which doesn’t have the DLC coating. The band itself didn’t result in scratches but without the coating the colour starts to fade and it is also more flimsy than the Apple one. For that reason I don’t wear it often anymore and for my next watch I am contemplating buying the silver one (only aluminium is available to buy here) with the Apple Milanese loop.

Regarding the scratchability of the aluminium watch, my S4 is almost two years old and has a minor scratch in the middle of the screen (only visible from an angle), a nick at the edge of the screen (from leaning against a brick wall), also a scratch in that area in the case (from the same wall incident) and then a little nick in the edge where the band attaches (presumably from changing bands).
When the first scratch appears, it upsets you but you learn to live with it and from a distance you don’t notice it.

Who admit they know something is wrong, but seek validation??? Look, it's easy: read words, understand, don't be a jerk. I think Jesus really advocated for this. Why can't you guys?

Jesus would have been pissed off they left the charger out of the box and swapped the velvet sleeve for cardboard.

But that’s my point exactly. The way they account for returns is by setting the prices of the products high enough that they can still make a profit even with returns. And given that they are such penny pinchers they are even less likely to just take the hit on the returns and will continue to raise prices if they get more returns than expected.

Again, one person returning one watch isn’t going to make a difference, but that one person might become 10 or 1000 or 10,000 and that’s will make a difference.

In the end, fraudulently returning damaged products isn’t going to hurt Apple, it’s going to hurt all of us consumers.

I am devastated, no idea how I've got it!

Part of me is tempted to return it because it's within the 14 day returns period and rebuying a new one (delivery isn't until the end of October though!)

My other thought is to buy Apple care and make a claim for accidental damage.

Anyone else had a similar issue?!
Just get apple care. File a claim in 4 months.

Give me a break with the "totally dishonest and commit fraud" argument! Like some who play (likely legal) games with their taxes or exploit other loopholes unseen by the masses; if it is permissible under Apple's terms and conditions then let the customer exercise that option.

and I'm pretty sure it's not "acts like this that bump up the costs for everyone.", but more likely 1. GREED! and 2. Endless lawsuits brought by companies against Apple for just about anything and everything!
This. Just return or buy Apple care. If I were you get Apple care. Accidental damage does occur. You can rebuy the Apple Watch upon returning and drop and crack the screen.

I had to rebuy a 2020 16 in MacBook Pro 3 months after buying a 2020 16 in pro when my water bottle opened in my backpack. Horrible mistake. So yah I spend 5k on apple products in 2020.

With many of the Apple products having monthly Applecare+ plans available I have put all my daily use items on the monthly plans. It adds up to a fair bit each month but a lot cheaper than buying a new one.

Hmmm £59 for AC + £49 for each incident? I think I’d live with a scratch
I got the titanium specifically for scratch resistance. I work outside in the yard, I was jackhammering and all that and my s5 is in perfect condition no scratches or dents. Keeping mine for at least 3-4 years since I paid so much.

I intend to keep my aluminium watch for 3 years but don’t intend to scratch it. If I do I won’t lose any sleep over it, it cost me £399.

Sure, if you want to be totally dishonest and commit fraud. Chances are you’ll not be caught but it’s acts like this that bump up the costs for everyone.

I'm with this!
Apple change the Apple Care windows surely for this kind of behavior. Years ago, you could buy the Apple Care the day after warranty ends. I did it, with no intention to make a fraud. Just because it's a lot of money to do it so quickly.

But now, you have to do it just in two months. And hey, this could be a lot of money and then you lost the chance, just because people keep doing the kind of things.

I’ve only punched an S1... I’ve worn it daily since purchase new soon after the release. It’s been with me running chainsaw with disaster relief. It’s seen service helping people move. I do yard work with it on... no scratches.

If you know minor scratches will bother you why not put a screen protector on it? I don’t understand people that get a scratch and they’re all shocked. It will scratch even if you’re careful and if you’re not careful you’ll have a watch that looks like mine 😂View attachment 962727

Some people think that "quality materials" means it should and will last forever.

Everything has an expiry date. So long as these things last 3-5 years that's good enough as by then the software, battery, etc. is too old anyway.
