Ok, I plan on doing this. But what if my number isn't eligible for upgrade? Will I still be able to activate the new sim card?

Ok, and one last question, what if I don't currently have a data plan added onto my account? Will I still be able to get the new unlimited data right off the bat? Or would I have to get the 2Gb first and then do this

Well currently I'm on an unlimited texting family plan which gives all the numbers on my account unlimited text. It's different then unlimited text per line

If I don't choose a texting package will I still have the unlimited texting from the family plan?
I want to keep all my original plan details, other than the data. E.g keep the entire family plan which includes the mobile to mobile and the unlimited text

I posted this question on the other thread on this subject but it seems to be less active so I'm re-posting here.

Here's my plan:

(1) Take iPhone 2G that is currently being used on T-Mobile and take out the SIM card.
(2) Call AT&T and activate this iPhone 2G with a brand new AT&T SIM card (I assume they can activate based on the iPhone IMEI # + SIM ICCID # ???)
(3) During activation, tell AT&T CSR that I want the 2G unlimited data plan.
(4) Once iPhone 2G is working with my AT&T phone number/account, remove the SIM card, cut to microSIM size, and put it my iPhone 4 (which was previously activated using the original microSIM).
(5) Put the T-Mobile SIM back in the iPhone 2G.

MY GOAL: Use my friend's iPhone 2G, which he currently uses on T-Mobile, but I don't want to wipe his phone. I just want to temporarily activate it on AT&T, and then give it back to him so he can put his T-Mobile SIM back into the phone and go on his way without any trouble.

Will this work?

I had read in the other thread on this subject that for best results to use a brand new SIM card. I don't care which SIM I use.

EDIT: Are you saying use the brand new regular size SIM to activate the iPhone 2G, but when I go back to the iPhone 4 just use the original microSIM?

What about the rest of my plan? Do you see any potential issues?

Thanks for your feedback.

Yeah, I think I saw that too. But i'm not totally sure what I'd have to click to when activating the 2G iPhone so that I can keep everything other than the new data plan I want to add. I don't want to mess up the family plan I have.

couldn't get it working

I've read through everything so far and did the procedures, but how is it, that it isn't asking me to choose any plans when I insert my microSIM into the 2g? I made an adapter myself and it did recognise my microSIM... I was able to use edge on the 2g... also did a "reset network settings" and that still didn't give me the option to choose anything... same thing as i plugged it into itunes...

am i missing a major step here? is it because my microSIM isn't fresh? i'm not a phone techie and really don't know how mobile networks work...help is appreciated, thanks!

Yes.

Restore the iPhone with a brand new never before used sim in it. Itunes will now prompt you to activate and pick your plan with unlimited data. READ.

I see... it somehow makes sense too, but I was wondering why it worked for some others... post #45 says it works with the original already-activated microSIM from the iphone4...

SpaceKitty advocates using a new sim. Some people said they didn't have to restore. I used the same sim during both, and restored the 2G. For me, after restoring the 2G without activating it yet, I restarted the activation process, got the "requires additional time" message, called AT&T, gave them a bs story about why I was using a 2G now instead of the iPhone 4 that my sim was registered with, they activated it over the phone, waited 10 minutes, put my microsim back into my iPhone 4, and resumed use with it. Never once have I changed my plan or anything.

As I stand right now, AT&T won't let me change my data plan to unlimited 3G (it's still on 2G unlimited with 200 texts and I receive the "not compatible with your device" error every time I attempt to change that) and I can't send nor receive MMS messages, but SpaceKitty says it's an easy fix and to just call AT&T to do it, which I haven't yet.

Personally, I'm paranoid that if I call them they'll see the recent changes from 2GB to unlimited EDGE to unlimited 3G and they'll suspend my service or something, so until my billing cycle ends and AT&T officially shows me being on 3G unlimited, I'm just going to deal with the lack of MMS messages. Then I'll give them a call and have them fix it.

so it sounds like to me that it works for some and for some it doesn't with an already activated sim, right? But when you say restore, do you restore the whole phone? I only did the network restore to see if it would do anything upon restart, since the phone is somebody's i just borrowed and she still is using it...

plus, i don't think they can do anything to you since you're actually not doing anything wrong... switching over to an iphone 2g to use it for 5 seconds is perfectly legal... and sequentially switching back to the iphone 4 is perfectly legal action as well... i might be dead wrong here, but i think we're all within legal boundaries...

Can someone please answer my question,

If I don't choose a texting package will I still have the unlimited texting from the family plan?
I want to keep all my original plan details, other than the data. E.g keep the entire family plan which includes the mobile to mobile and the unlimited text

Chances are, there's going to be a conflict with the $20 iPhone Plan since it includes texting. What will probably happen is that it'll remove the Unlimited Family Texting, give you the $20 iPhone Data Plan. Then, when you put the sim back into the iPhone 4 and you receive the text that you now have the $30 Unlimited Data Plan, you can then proceed to add the Unlimited Family Texting plan back into your account.

Well you see, I don't plan on putting the sim card into an iPhone 4. I plan on using another smartphone (The Samsung Captivate [Android phone]). Do you think I'll still get a text when I put my sim into the samsung phone telling me that it switched over to the $30 unlimited?

It will always work eventually. The difference that seems to exist between activated sim and new sim is whether you have to call AT&T to have them activate it or if it will activate itself via iTunes. But I don't think it "won't work"; as long as the 2G is recognizing the sim, you are good to go.

Right, but I also don't want them to see the changes in my account and switch it back to 2 GB. It's more or less and unfounded and silly paranoia, but one that I'm just going to stick to until my billing cycle ends ha.

Yea it'll let you keep the unlimited txt. once they switch you over to the unlimited they'll also put you back on your unlimited family txt. it won't show on ur online account tho so you'll have to wait until ur bill cycle ends to see it. but if you dial *3282# you'll see that your still using it even tho it says DEACTIVATED. because the used amount will keep increasing as you txt ppl and the 200 txt that came with the $20 data will never decrease or be used.
Hope that makes sense..lol
