Yea it'll let you keep the unlimited txt. once they switch you over to the unlimited they'll also put you back on your unlimited family txt. it won't show on ur online account tho so you'll have to wait until ur bill cycle ends to see it. but if you dial *3282# you'll see that your still using it even tho it says DEACTIVATED. because the used amount will keep increasing as you txt ppl and the 200 txt that came with the $20 data will never decrease or be used.
Hope that makes sense..lol

Ok, I think I understand that lol. Basically i'll still have the unlimited text even though the plan I chose is supposed to come with 200 txt. And once my data plan switches over to the $30 a month it will remove the 200 txt portion and just show that i'm using a family plan that gives unlimited text.

Will this still work if I put my sim card into a phone other than a iPhone 4? Like will it switch to the $30 3G data for me?

That's pretty much it, just remember that you can also get online and change the features there.

Also, I don't think we're sure if it'll absolutely work for just about any other smartphone. Chances are, it will, but I think you're the first one doing this for another smartphone.

Im loving this....

For me it worked like a charm. Try it you have absolutely nothing to lose. To be honest I was thinking of unlocking my Iphone 4 when the software came out but i pay about the same amount on at&t now with my FAN discount with everything unlimited , than with t-mobile with EDGE on my iphone and no visual voicemail.. so ill stick with at&t at least in Puerto Rico reception is very very good.

are there any differences between the orange and the blue at&t sim cards?? i have the feeling that the orange are newer or something... the metal contact parts look more like the microSIMs...just wondering, because i'm about to order a new sim card, since I don't want to deal with calling at&t to activate...

I had a funny feeling that this hole would surface...

Theres no point in paying roughly the same price for a 2GB cap!!

Now if my iP4 would ship...

Is there any way I can do this with out an Iphone2g? I live in the Los angeles area and these fools on craigslist are asking like 200bucks for the 2g..and none will lend them not even for a small fee

los angeles has lotsa asian stores who sell 2nd hand electronics...hard to deal with them, but if you're a good customer, they'll negotiate... for much less than 200 i'm sure!

I don't mean to discredit this idea, but couldn't AT&T just do a regular sweep and see that you are using an iPhone 4 with a SIM activated to an iPhone 2G plan? Then they just make the correction to your account... Or is the whole idea really that you are on a $30 unlimited plan, just like tons of other grandfathered accounts, and you will possibly blend in with them?

The point is you were just grand fathered in. Who's to say you bought a 2G iPhone and loved it so much you decided to buy a new iPhone 4? They can't determine why you switched phones.

I see what you are getting at, but if/once they see your account was created after they implemented their new data plans (maybe doesn't quite apply to existing AT&T users, but who did not have an unlimited data plan), that shows that you weren't technically grandfathered in, you didn't have a $30 unlimited plan before they implemented the new data plans... Hmm..

UPDATE !

Got this today,

"Hello XXXXXXXXXX :

Please contact AT&T Wireless regarding account number XXXXXXXXX at 1-800-947-5096. Thank You."

anyone else?

I am wondering if it is b/c my last bill was not paid ? (reason is, when switching over to the "unlimited data plan" it reset my bill... and my account online said "nothing due" ....even though a month has passed.

before I go into the fire.... anyone care to comment?

Just sounds like you need to pay your bill... Just because the site messed up and says amount owed $0, doesn't mean you got a free month of service...

Yeah.... thanks for your answer... I thought that, but just wanted to be sure. (I never expected to get a free month - just didnt know what the procedure was)

if anyone else got this email, please let us know in the comments.

ADDED: I CALLED TODAY :

I called today to ask what's up.... they told me there are no issues... said I have a zero balance, and I owe "zero dollars".... I know this is going to sounds strange, but it seems I entered into a billing "vacuum" - whereby, I am not getting charged anything for whatever reason.

AND KARMA is going to be knocking in 1,....2......3....

;)

Help ?

MY CURRENT BILLING PERIOD (June 24th-July25th) :
(*note, I am a first time AT&T customer, and bought my iphone 4 from an apple store on the day it was released)

$272 !

MY PLAN:
1. $59.99 -900 anytime minutes/ unlimited night/wknd and unlimited mobile to mobile

2. $30 - data plan for iphone unlimited data (using the method posted here)

3. $20 - messaging unlimited

Under breakdown for bill summary - it doesnt list anything, it just says "Monthly Service Charges $226.33 (then add all the other taxes including adjustment of $17.99.. etc... comes to $272)

Anyone have ANY IDEA WTF is going on?

The only thing that would make sense is if I am being charged for the period between June and July, and I am being charged GOING FORWARD for July-August. any ideas???

1ST month bill , you pay a month in advance ..

The bill sounds about right since they didn't bill you for last month.

June Prorated
July $110
August $110

Thanks.... both of you are right - just got off the phone with AT&T.

1st time customer....so pay the month in advance... plus the bill didnt come up properly with the 2g data switch...so now they are consolidated on one bill.

WHEW.... this whole AT&T thing has made me paranoid.... hope this helps someone else.

one question I have though is...shouldn't AT&T care that I pay a subsidized fee for the iPhone 4 and then just use the old iPhone 2G? or am I correct in saying that the iPhone 4 is priced at $199 for the 2 year year contract and I'm free to use whatever phone I please as long as I keep the contract?

Only the voice portion is under contract. You could switch your sim to a non smart phone and cancel the iPhone data "feature" and "text" feature" and only pay voice anytime you want.

Just wanted to further clarify about FAN discounts that no one seemed to be able to here nor in the other thread that was started about this process:

If you are on an individual account, you WILL lose your FAN discount and it has to be reapplied. As stated before, the iPhone 2G data does not qualify for the discount therefore it will be removed.

If you are on a family discount, as long as one of the lines still qualify for the FAN discount, it will remain on the plan and eventually spread back to your line when AT&T does the auto-switch back to Unlimited 3G. Or at least I assume they will, since it qualifies.

To add to this whole ordeal, on numerous occasions I tried manually changing the data plan from Unlimited+200 texts back to Unlimited 3G but received the standard "not compatible with your device" error. So I attempted to email AT&T hoping that just playing stupid over an email would get them to change it (this is after a billing cycle had passed and still no change, and also how I know for sure about the FAN discount still being applied).

Well for some reason on AT&T's website, every time I went to clicked Email under their Contact Us portion of the site, it kept saying my session timed out. After 4 or 5 tries, a box popped up offering for me to take a survey. So I thought to myself, "Sure, why the hell not, let them know that their site isn't working for me."

So in the survey, I answered truthfully (coming from Verizon, AT&T's website is poorly organized and presented compared to the straightforwardness and ease of accessibility of Verizon's) about how I felt about their website, and then they had a suggestions/comments section and I basically told them that I was very frustrated that I couldn't email support due to an error the repeatedly came up for no reason. A few questions down, it then asked if I was successfully able to accomplish what I visited the website for and I said no and it asked what did I want to do and why couldn't I and I said that I've been receiving texts from AT&T that they changed my data plan to an appropriate one, and that I was coming from an unlimited 2G data plan and I assumed they were putting me on the unlimited 3G but when I checked it, it wasn't changed, so after attempting to change it myself, an error popped up.

Well that was about a week ago. Today I check it, and I'm now listed as receiving Unlimited 3G data. So either this was a major coincidence, or somebody just did what I asked and didn't both sending an email back.

One note of interest: when I click to "Manage features", iPhone Unlimited is listed twice, yet is supposed to be the same thing? So I found that odd. As if they put me on a second one so that they would know that it isn't supposed to be true unlimited? Or that my FAN discount won't be applied? Who knows.

Anyway, that's my story.

I'm planning to buy a new sim card to get this thing going through the 2g phone. But if a borrow a friend's 2G, will I have to reset any network settings or any others? I just want to give it back to the original condition as when I got it from him...
