maybe it's because I'm putting an a used sim, that I no longer use? because someone in this thread said he used a used sim, so that's why I was trying that. I also have a micro sim adapter, and i tried putting in my micro sim into my iphone 2g, and I get the same message.

You need a new sim card. Once you "deactivate" a sim, it's no good anymore (there may be a way to get AT&T to activate it again but I'm not sure about that). Make sure that you are using either a brand-new sim card or one that is still active.

hey i did the steps and used a brand new sim card and its still giving me the "your activation requires additional time to complete" message! should i just wait it out or redo the steps again or what... thanks for your help

yup, same thing is happening with me. I tried an unactivated sim card from an iPad, and I tried using my current sim in my iphone 4. do you also have a FAN discount on your account? are you on a family or individual account?

im on a family plan and its showing that message while trying to activate the 2G not the iPhone 4. its been stuck at that screen for an hour now and im not receiving an e-mail from them. what should we do? maybe call at&t?

EDIT: no i dont have any discounts on my lines

How are you using your iphone 4 sim in a 2G? Do you have an adapter?

Question: Do you actually need to have a 2g iphone while doing this? Or can you just pretend to have one and activate a phantom 2g iphone?

Since this is my first iphone, I dont have a 2g iphone. Can I just get a new sim card, and activate the 2g unlimited plan on that, then get another new micro-sim and switch back?

EDIT: Ok I just realised that I in fact do need a 2g iphone, only then will iTunes recognise and allow me to change my plan. Correct?

No you need the phone so iTunes can reconize its a 2G iPhone if you can look around you can find around under 100 if you desperatly want to get a unlimted data plan.

so does anyone have a solution to that "your activation requires additional time" screen?

no.......it's my sim cutter, i was just saying i have many sim cutters as i sell them online

By "many" do you mean you have 2 and you told a friend about it online through chat or PM and he was interested and bought it from you?

as long as people still have the first gen iPhone i dont think this will go away they changed the planes for all new smart phones.

That's nice to know . Guess i'll start shopping around for an iphone 2g. A big thank you to the thread starter~

i think on Monday I'm going to go to my friend that works at AT&T and see if he can try activating the phone in the store. I will let you know if this works.

ya got too lazy today, and i figured tomorrow, since it's a holiday they are probably closed.

Ok, just had a thought here. could i buy the iPhone 4 for $200 while selecting either of the data plans, then take the sim out and put it in an iPhone 2g, switch it to the unlimited data plan, then take the sim out and put it back into the iPhone 4?

In short no ... It's a little more work

Wondering if someone can look this over and just verify this was done correctly :

step 1: I got a standard blank sim.... put it in a friends iphone 2g...
step 2: connected to itunes.... got it activated with my iphone 4 cell number....
step 3: then took the sim out...and cut it down to size (micro sim)...
step 4: then put it in my iphone 4... i got a text message...and it says something like : "your iphone requires an eligible data plan. we have added an appropriate plan and messaging package "
step 5 : ? is that it ? or do I have to now change something on my data / messaging / phone plan? ... ( i initially picked unlimited date + unlimiting messaging (with the iphone 2g)... should I remove messaging now or something ?)
step 6: review, I looked at my account online and it says :

  • Nation 900 Rollover & Unlimited Night/Weekend & Unlimited Mobile-to-Mobile Minutes
  • iPhone 3G Data plan for iphone $30 Unlimited (current)
  • Messaging $20 Unlimited (current)

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP !!!

ps: Good link for cutting your sim card

Read the steps above you can either buy a new sim or just get a Micro sim card adapter which is what i did dont want to risk messing something up when i cut it.

posted above its really not that much work just activate a sim with your new iPhone 4 #.
