I didn't have to restore my iPhone 4. Took the sim out of my 2g, cut it down, inserted in my 4 and turned it on.
Had no problems.

you should probably click you heels three times after. Holy crap. how many times do people have to ask the same question? This isn't rocket science. Maybe people like you should stick with 2gb. Unlimited might be too much responsibility.
i have 2 iphone 2g and everytime i try to activate either one, it tells me "your activation requires additional time to complete" and nothing happens after that. Maybe because I have a FAN discount on my account??? anyone else have this issue?
Not sure what is so complicated about this.
The dude at the AT&T store just kept my existing data plan the same from my 3GS and activated my 4 on it.
I confirmed it on my online account yesterday.

Ok can some1 tell me exactly how to get an unlimited data plan on a iPhone 4? Do i need to buy an iPhone 2G and activate that first or what? Like list steps if you could lol.
And also, is the unlimited data plan $20 or $30? On here i keep seeing $20 Unlimited Data, but before i would hear people say $30![]()
im not sure if i wanna do this cuz i get 30% FAN discount and i dont want that going away if i temporarily switch to the 2g iphone. wont be able to verify as i dont work for the company anymore. i really do want that unlimited though
edit: any of you guys with FAN discounts lose it after doing this?
Did you restore the iPhone first and then insert a brand new sim in it? If you try and put a new sim in the phone without restoring, it will give you the message that it needs more time to complete and it will never complete.
if you get a discount on your bill than regardless of the phone you will continue getting the discount so long as they dont ask you to verify you still work there (since you just said you dont.) however, they shouldnt ask for verification since according to your bills you do still work there and thats all they need to know.
i seen somewhere on the net that FAN discounts dont apply to the 2G iphone so im not to sure
But you aren't keeping the 2G iPhone activated, Once the iPhone 4 is activated, you can add the discount back.

I copied this from Spacekitty, She's the one who started telling about how to do this a few weeks back :
First as I said, you need an original iPhone and you can borrow one if you know someone who has one. You will also need a new never used before sim.
Backup the original iPhone FIRST. Insert the new sim into the iPhone. After backing up, restore the iPhone.
Once the restore is complete, iTunes will prompt you to activate your iPhone. There is a question that asks are you activating a new phone or replacing you current phone with this iPhone, select that you are replacing your iPhone with this iPhone.
Next it will ask you to select your rate plan and data+SMS plan. I simply selected the unlimited data + 200 SMS. It will tell you that you are agreeing to a two year contract but you really aren't so just click through and let it activate the iPhone. AT&T is only offering unlimited data plans for the original iPhone and there is no choice but to get the unlimited so you are all set here.
Now you can login to your online account to verify that you do have unlimited data.
Next, take out the sim and place it in your 3G, 3GS or iPhone 4. Within a few hours, AT&T will send you an SMS stating that they have detected that you are using an unapproved data plan with your iPhone and that they have added the appropriate plan for you. When you now login to your account online, you will see that they have changed your plan to the unlimited 3G $30 plan. Do not call AT&T and have them change your data plan because they may sign you up for a new two year contract to do it.
It works, I have done just this today. Enjoy.
Thanks. And does it matter that im on a Family plan, as my mom is currently paying for unlimited texts? If not i might just have to pay for everything myself..
When I was activating the SIM in my 2G it did say I would lose my discount but when I called after putting the SIM in my iPhone 4 she told me my discount had been reapplied when the data was moved to the $30 unlimited.
when you called, what did you tell them?
edit: do you still get a discount on that $30 data plan?
I said I got a text msg saying my account was no longer compatible with my phone and I was put on a compatible plan.
So I asked what plan was I put on. She said the $30 unlimited plan. I then asked about text and she said I was on the 1500 plan (the one I wanted)
I then asked if my military discount was still in effect and she told me the "override" had been done and my military discount was still good to go.
so you pay $30 for unlmtd data+1500msgs?
is there an option for $40 unlmtd data+unlmtd msgs?
The unlimited data plan is $30, by itself
Just like the 2g plan is $25 atm
Basically you pay $5 more for unlimited data.
Text plans are all still the same
