for those that have had issues with "activation requires additional time"

this is what i did.

I went to an att store, i got a new sim card, then I tried activating it with the 2g and that still gave me the same error. So i called att, and told them that i want to go on a trip, and don't want to take my iphone 4 with me, so I asked them to remove my current data plan, and add my new sim card number, and my iphone 2g imei number. after that i tried going thru itunes, and it gave me the same error, but that does not matter, because the att rep added the $20 plan and my sim, and imei number to my account already. so i just cut my sim using my micro sim cutter, and put it in my iphone 4. so now I'm waiting for it to automatically switch me to the $30 plan for unlimited.

I was also getting the "additional time" message. Here are the steps that I used and it eventually worked for me.

1. Got a new (non micro) SIM card from AT&T. Use an excuse that you lost your iPhone and are going to use the line on a different phone. It's optional, but you could ask them for a micro sim card also. The guy I spoke to let me have one in case I found my iPhone.

2. IMPORTANT: Have them remove your old iPhone plan and give them an IMEI number to a phone that is NOT an iPhone. I used a RAZR.

3. Go home and stick the (non micro) SIM into the iPhone 2G. Go through regular activation process through iTunes and this time you should not get the "additional time" message.

4. Go back to the AT&T store. If you were lucky and got an extra micro sim from your first trip to AT&T, you just have to call customer service and have them activate that sim. Tell them you found your iPhone 4 and need to activate a micro sim card. On the screen, they should now have the option to add the unlimited iPhone data plan for $30. You can have them add this option or you could add it yourself at wireless.att.com.

Hope this helps. Enjoy!!!

So you for sure need multiple SIM cards? In the other thread they were saying to just use tape to put it in the 2G. Is that not the case?

For us that got "additional time required" error we need an additional sim. But if you don't get that error, you probably won't need 2 different sims.

And a "I lost my iPhone 4, using a temp iPhone 2G" excuse will cut it? If the AT&T clerk sees that I just recently have been added to a family plan and they have to activate it in store, will that bar me from adding unlimited data myself later?

I'm understanding of the whole process, I just wanna know what to do/say if I'm questioned at a store.

I just told them I picked up an old iPhone off craigslist and needed a sim card for it because the original owner kept his sim card.

Ah easy enough. Sounds pretty fail-proof assuming AT&T can't stop me. So even if I get the 2G activated in store with unlimited data, there's nothing they can do (make a note, put a future block on unlimited data feature, etc.) that will keep me from activating my iPhone 4 and getting unlimited data? And will I have to get a new SIM for the iPhone 4 as well? I wasn't sure if the "needs additional time" error message was popping up only for those activating the 2G or the 4 as well.

Very simple. I just put my microsim from my iPhone 4 into an old 2g phone using a double sided tape and activated the old phone thru iTunes. I got the activation failed msg in my email.so I called em up n told em I'm trying to activate an iPhone. I also asked em why I had to call it in before my 2g could be activated. They said ATT is trying to make sure people would want to downgrade. There's really no need to explain yourself. After that I saw unlimited data on mu account online and put the sim back to my iphone 4. Done! :) thanks a bunchh

Which AT&T number did you call? 1-866-526-9739? That's given to me because I got an email saying my activation process was canceled but it won't let me restart the process.

I got an email from at&t that they changed my plan to the apropriate plan but on the site it still shows that i have the 20$ unlimited +200 for iphone 2g and when I try changing it to the unlimited 30$ I get an error

I hope this doesn't mean they closed the loophole. I got off the phone with the activation number given (the 1-866- one) and after a few questions about why and about the IICD (I think?) and IMEI numbers, she finally activated the 2G and made a phone call to it to confirm. After that, I checked my AT&T account, it showed a 2G being used on the account and had unlimited EDGE data. I put my SIM back into my iPhone 4, called *3282# to get my data usage, and it says:

Next Bill Cycle: 07-18-10
Data (MB): 0.1 of Unlimited
Data (MB): 61.1 of 2048 (Deactivated)
Data (MB) Overage: 0
Messaging: 0 of 80
Messaging: 2535 of Unlimited

So I'm just gonna say it worked. I finished with the 2G activation process around 5:30, switched sims around 5:40, and haven't had an email or text from them yet confirming an "upgraded" data plan.

Well I also got a text that they changed my plan, but like I said the site shows that I still have the 20$ unlimited plan. I tried calling at&t and they confirmed that that's the plan I have.

I just now got a text saying I needed to choose an eligible data plan. I went to the website and changed my phone/device to iPhone 4 and it still lists the unlimited data for $20. I'll let it change on its own.

The site let me choose unlimited 3G for $30, but when I went to change submit the change, I got an error message that said something to the extent that the feature wasn't compatible. So possibly bad news for me and anyone else who was planning on taking advantage of this..

I'm getting the same error screen on att.com. i see the unlimited data for $30 option but it wont let me change to it. do you think it will change it automatically eventually? its weird cuz the txt and e-mail i got from them said that they have picked an appropriate plan for my device

It will change on it's own next billing period.

which data plan are you guys using?

I'm on the one it automatically puts you on, but there's another $30 unlimited plan, i'm debating switching over, but I'm not sure if it really makes a difference.
