Yep, I know the S5 is DLC. Just a little concerned about S6, since the finish is lighter and apparently thinner, since more of the brushed titanium can be seen through it. Could just be a thinner DLC, but haven’t seen confirmation.

Well the only other option would be PVD like they use on the Gold models. But that seems to be specifically because of the gold hues. In fact, I would not be surprised if the Gold SS watches use Titanium nitride as their PVD coating because it is golden in color and is often used for costume jewelry.

TiCN (Titanium CarboNitride) is a dark-grey version of TiN, but like TiN, it's a ceramic coating so I would expect it to be glossy if used on the SBTi watch, not matte.

Everyone has their own preferences. I really did “Like” my SB SS when I got it but never fell in love with it. To me it just never felt special for the price and made the watch feel like more of an electronic device than time keeping jewelry. The Graphite is everything I have ever wanted in a finish. Dark enough that it is not silver but enough sheen that it looks like a more expensive silver than the SB.

Im happy, but that’s my taste.

Agreed. I just love this color. Not to blingy and not to dark. Love how it plays with light.

I’m so torn that I’m considering returning both titanium S6 models and graphite too!

It’s got me thinking... What is it about my SS series 4 am I that unhappy with?

The answer is... Nothing. Maybe I’ll wait until a real design update. Ugh.

It’s nothing personal against anybody else, but at least you’re able to differentiate why you wouldn’t upgrade from your S4, being that others tend to rely too much on someone else’s opinion on the Internet. The reality is, I don’t see you being the perfect target demographic for the S6, when I think it’s more substantial for those who have the Series 3 and under.

What would I think would make it more ‘special‘ to upgrade to the S6, is if you were graduating from the 7000 series aluminum to the graphite as you mentioned, that would probably enhance the experience, being that you do have a more premium watch, especially given Apples manufacturing for the watch is at its best.

I ordered the SBTI & SS Graphite 44mm Celluar - TI is due 28/09
I cancelled the SS Graphite but now i'm thinking did I do the right thing ? !!
From the few reviews of the SBTI it seems to show finger prints up like crazy ...... does anyone know if the Graphite SS is the same ?

I saw a SBTI unboxing video on youtube yesterday and the guy commented on the finger prints when he pulled it out of the pouch. Within seconds it had finger prints all over it. Can't comment on the Graphite as mine hasn't arrived yet.

I suspect you will have a lot of fingerprints and marks - shouldn't stop you though, Graphite is amazing!

When I had an SS I would often give it a light wipe with a microfiber cloth in the morning, and make sure it was shiny for the day.

Interestingly, the Graphite Watch is DLC but the Graphite Milanese is PVD, so this might avoid the situation where the strap will scratch the body of the watch?
This isn’t the case. Got my Graphite black out the box, put on charge attached the Milanese band and the wife noticed these fine marks when I handed to her to admire just before putting on. I’m totally gutted. Bought the DLC Graphite because it was supposed to be a little more hard wearing

Is that the milanese band that came with the watch? Thats... horrible! Crap, I just ordered a graphite SS with milanese band, and now I got really worried.

Yup, not the most flattering photo as it is nice but I’m not using that band anymore. I thought the DLC was a little more hard wearing

It isn’t that difficult to treat the band with care once you are aware of the issue. I used one for over a year with only tiny marks that really weren’t noticeable unless you looked super closely for them.

  • Never loop the strap around the body or screen
  • Try to keep the band taught when putting it on / taking it off
  • Never bundle the Watch and strap up to put it in a pocket (e.g. a bag pocket when going through airport security)
  • Be really careful when charging that your charger has some way of keeping the band away from the Watch.
Follow these principles and you should be fine.

Just check it's not marks left by the band, may be removable. The reason I say this is because the band is supposed to be a softer PVD than the DLC watch. With my SB watches I often knocked them and thought I'd scratched them only for the marks to rub off with a little effort. Worth a go.

There have been more than enough reports of people’s Graphite Milanese loops scratching their watches to conclude that the loop is also DLC coated. The statement on Apple’s website that it is PVD is a misprint. That’s not uncommon to have missing/incorrect information on Apple’s site around a product launch. The company is so secretive that most of its employees don’t know anything about a product until launch day. Likely some employee was told to update the site with only hours to go and copy/pasted the gold ML description without knowing the difference between DLC and PVD.

It seems unlikely they would go away from it having used it in the Series 5. They might have just changed the dye used in the coating since many complained that Ti and SBTi look like Al and SBAl from a distance of more than a meter or two.

I suppose you could send an email to Jeff Williams at Apple and ask.

I also found via Google's Cache of the old Apple Watch Edition page for the Series 5 confirmation that it is a DLC coating for the S5 (and assuredly for the S6):

So according to this information it doesn't say that the natural brushed titanium finish used the dlc only that it is stain and fingerprint resistant so do you think it will scratch easily?

I am having a hard time choosing between the SBTi and the natural brushed titanium, there isn't an apple store where I live so I can't go and see it in person.

See the AW5 Titanium thread from last year. Natural Titanium has just an anti-stain/fingerprint coating, and yes it can scratch. Reports are that it can also be cleaned up pretty easily with common stuff.

SBTi is a DLC coated watch - documented for Series5 and no reasons to think they've done something different this year.

I’ve had my natural Ti since last years launch. My watch has a few faint micro scratches that I have to look hard to see. I dont believe the natural Ti is easily scratched unless you are extremely hard on things. If you like it, go for it. I’m delighted with mine after a year.

I really wish Apple would release a Graphite link band for this watch. I don't think the silver or black pair very well with it and the link band is my go to daily band at work.

I'd still give trying to remove the marks a go incase it is PVD.

As a graphite Milanese strap owner I hope it is DLC for the extra durability.
I'd like official confirmation though.

Fingerprinting on any thing slate color is inevitable on a watch. It’s based on your oil composition from your hands. Graphite might hide prints somewhat better, Being it doesn’t share that ‘high gloss shine’ the regular black Stainless has. The key is, invest in a good quality microfiber cloth.

I’m betting it dlc too. It makes no sense to use pvd and have it match the case perfectly. Also if Apple went to pvd to avoid scratching then clearly they would have caught this in testing. Doesn’t make sense. Has to be a typo.
