Hopefully they can hit less than $300 as the price point.

It sounds like this is going to be a sweet solution with a lot of innovative technology. Apple going for a more advanced solution obviously led them to hit some unexpected delays, but at least they've waited to get it right and have not rushed out something until its ready for the masses.

My guess is it’s best to skip first generation of AirPower. At least wait until a major software update—Tim’s Apple can’t even get multiple timers on Siri working—or a rev.a of hardware.

With that said, I’m definitely buying 3 of them.

Did you not read the article? it's all part of a bigger picture, a wireless future. I think the Air Power will be great, being able to charge my iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods at the same time without multiple cables is a great thing for most people. The Apple Watch has a Night Stand mode that works when lying on it's back and not just when it's on it's side.

how do you know that the surface of it is slippery? the product hasn't even been released yet, I'm sure Apple will have thought about all of this anyway.

I guess we will see if it's shipped in September.

And following another recent Apple trend, in a few years ONLY Apple chargers will work with Apple devices. This is probably one of the reasons a CPU and an OS is required by a charging mat. The really exciting thing is if you’re traveling and your wireless charger fails or is lost or stolen you don’t have to worry about running down to a nearby convenience store because you already know that they don’t carry them.
The potential downside for Apple is people may decide that cost and availability may start to factor into people’s portable electronic decisions.

I gurantee the majority of people complaining on here will have it pre ordered the second it hits the store.

How can you even know it's the best charger? Fanboy anyone?

Depends, is your cat compatible with wireless charging?

As stated: other companies make a pad that can charge one device. This pad will charge different devices with a different power requirement whereever you place them.
It's a company worth a trillion dollars. They have the best everything on the planet. There's no way it's this difficult.

I would never buy this until the 3rd or 4th revision. Good luck to the early adopter beta testers.

It looks good though and would really be convenient for my Apple Watch and iPhone X.

Off at a tangent here, is there a sweet spot for wireless charging on the phone? I currently have a metal plate in my phone case for a magnetic mount, pretty central to the phone, would this interfere with charging?

I don't have a wireless charging phone yet, so I could reposition it to avoid blocking the sweet spot.

Cost may be a factor for people, personally i'm going to wait and see when it comes out, if it's what they say it is and i can charge my iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods all at the same time and not have to worry about placing them in order or anything like that (that's what sets it apart from the other wireless chargers) then i will buy one.

The big appeal with it is having one device with one cable that plugs into the wall and charge those 3 things that i own rather than my current set up of an iPhone charger, the Apple Watch puck charger and my AirPods charger. I do think that will also appeal to a lot of people as well.

I hope they don't remove the charging port I still prefer the hard cable charging method.

Im not saying its a bad idea being able to charge all your devices, but its a flat surface... looks like the top of a mac mini or an old apple TV... a gloss surface. The watch is a perfect example having a nightstand mode which works with the shipped charger but won't work with this as it has to sit flat.

It just hasn't been designed well to fit in with the situations it will find itself. More poor industrial design which doesn't allow you to use the devices the way they were intended.

for example.

HJC92

Why not make it so the user can see it... instead of using the cable method make the backs of where the products sit wireless.

Im not necessarily saying the above is the answer but at least you could check you phone or see the watch in nightstand mode. Instead of having to get up or pick up the device to see. Plus with it being a flat surface if you pick your phone up in the night whats to stop you putting it down wrong and knocking another device off charge... not like any of the devices are docked.

At the end of the day the only benefit is you can charge multiple devices... otherwise the design is about as bog standard lack of thought classic modern apple yet will be £200.

but you cant charge your watch with a strap like stainless steel that doesnt lay flat fail

Yes, Apple are making it so that you can place all 3 devices (iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods) anywhere on the mat and it will charge.

From a pure sales perspective this was short sighted. Apple could have produced a “dumb” charging mat with clearly marked sections for a phone and watch and airpods and had it available when the X was released last year.

Then when their smartmat was ready they could time it to the release of a new product so it’s available when the item it supports goes on sale. Apple gets their wireless charging foot in the door sooner, gives early adopters something to upgrade to, and gives other people a cheaper alternative if cost is a big factor in their purchasing decision.

Everyone on MacRumors complained up a storm that it was far too expensive and wouldn't buy it. Why does it matter when a product you won't be buying is released?

I can't think of a use for this. I charge my Apple products overnight and I always want my watch in nightstand position. Even when I travel. I guess some people want it though?

I had forgotten about this; assumed it just went the way of the dodo bird. Anyone who wanted an inductive charger would have purchased one by now from another vendor? I sure didn't wait around.
Just a contrast of the new Apple lol, i say this in jest to what they use to be, remember when Apple accused other makers producing VAPORWARE? lol seems fitting now, although its just one product, they had the right to say what they did back then.

My study table is higher than my bed. So I will actually never be in a position where I open my eyes in bed and be able to see my phone or watch.

Not to mention that your iPhone will vibrate when you place it on a wireless charger correctly, so it's not as if there is no tactile feedback that you are "doing it right".

In my case at least, the airpower pad would actually be more or less in line with how I am currently charging my devices.

Does it seem odd to anyone else that Apple stopped selling AirPorts when they are pushing a wireless future?
I guess it's more that Apple felt there was little they could do to meaningfully differentiate the airport router from the rest of the competition. Airpower in comparison should offer greater utility.
