Pathetic. No company should pre-announce things ONE YEAR ahead. Especially if such things are really minor like another (more advanced) Qi Charger.
Then again, hey, they preannounced the new Mac Pros by what 2-3 years... so yea...

Over engineer the ancillary products, spend so much time developing them that the price has to be high and neglect the main devices that keep people within the ecosystems.

Recent Examples:
Airpower
Homepod
iPad Pro Smart Keyboard

Also a special mention to the trash can Mac Pro and Apple watch bands.

Is everyone that is belly-aching over this planning to actually buy one? Seems like a lot of hysterics over a charger... Just buy a different one like many others have. I also dont think they ever gave a specific range for release, just simply 2018.

I know they said "2018," but (historically) when Apple has announced a companion device (like the AirPods, for example) along with a new phone, it didn't take an extra year for it to show up in stores.

This was a bad move. If they meant "when we announce a new iPhone next year in 2018" they should have communicated "in the 2nd half of 2018" or similar.

That way, it would be June before anyone even started looking for it.

My house is full of wireless chargers that work VERY well and since I do not HAVE to charge AirPods or my watch alongside one another, I'm totally fine skipping this unless there's some hidden feature or features that I think are a MUST have.

Had this been available with the phone last year, I would likely have bought it, even if it was more expensive than I might have liked.

People usually buy things when there is a need. I just do not seem to have a need for what this seems to be.

I'll just let you know now since I'm from the future. There is no must have feature since you're getting by just fine right now.

I had forgotten about this; assumed it just went the way of the dodo bird. Anyone who wanted an inductive charger would have purchased one by now from another vendor? I sure didn't wait around.

I didn't either. I think they missed the boat on this. I just picked up a cool one that holds my 8+ upright and hangs my watch. I won't need another for a very long time.

Why is this such a complicated thing? Does it do something aside from charging gadgets?
The problem merely is the Cook pipeline. It seems to be fed by its own output, so products make many more cycles until eventually being popped out
Anyway, Tim is abroad - and cannot be reached for comment

And a price?

$49 ?
$99 ?
$149 ?
$199 ?
$249 ?
$299 ?

I'd guess between 99 and 149
Your iOS calculator seems to have rounding problems
We recommend buying our newest gear and to extend your AppleCare

Lets not reward apple for another late to market poorly planned and executed product. Airpower is a miss. So is HomePod (the most useless speaker on the market).
Wrong, HomePod is one of the best on the market due to sound and general tasks. Air power is hardly a miss considering what it will be able to do.

I don't get the "technical issues". It's just a stupid charging pad. Thousands of companies make these.
It's not that simple when you can place a number of different size devices in any arrangement you wish on a wireless charging coil.

Many wireless chargers are quite picky about device orientation and correct placement – and that's for charging one device at a time.

Is Apple over-engineering AirPower? Perhaps. Or perhaps they simply want to give their customers the easy experience of just placing a number of devices on one pad and "it'll just work" without having to fiddle with positions. That'd be the hallmark Apple experience.

Just for info:

Here in England I bought a £15 wireless charger from IKEA and I can't fault it.

I haven't done any extensive charging tests so please don't ask me how long to charge from X% however:
I can testify that you can only fit one phone on it at a time but it works.

Also if you want a bigger one that can simultaneously charge 3 phones or an I pad - they also sell one that can do all that for £60. I don't work for IKEA by the way - my wife loves the place.

Just sayin:)

AirPower is another step towards Apple's goal of a wireless future.

Apple is moving towards an ultra wired future. Now already more wires than ever required. If they remove the lightning port this will create a whole lot of more cables on the desks for "wireless" solutions.

Actually it’s called the non troll perspective. It’s laughable the amount who come here and post completely poor analysis of certain Apple products.
But that single thing beyond doubt it is that maximizing margins is at the core of every product.
Hence my remark
(if that falls in your definition of trolling, you may have a busy time here)

Anyway, explain what makes AirPower so much better than what AppleWatch/iPhone owners already have (or ordered from Ikea) ?

That's odd, I use my HomePods every single day.
[doublepost=1529595875][/doublepost]Oh snap. I just found this on another Apple news site, one that operates only during "business hours."

"The AirPower charger is also more advanced than the current competition because it includes a custom Apple chip running a stripped down version of the iOS mobile operating system to conduct on-device power management and pairing with devices."

That one doesn't even have a charger for the watch, you have to bring your own watch charger. That doesn't seem very convenient.

Why would that be an issue? If it’s on the stand at home why would you need to have more than one watch charger?

Using 3 cables isn’t great but for a stand at night it will do the same type of job at a very low price

Plus wireless stands for me are far more useful than ones that are flat. Like just touching the screen at night to check the time/any notifications than having to pick the phone up

Apple already knew how to make an Apple Charging mat. They wanted a better Apple Charging mat. So, why announce it a year ahead of time with a vague "in 2018" when they were announcing the first wireless phones in their stable?

It's just weird. Why not throw a wireless mat out there that will charge a single device, so you can capitalize on the charger market and make charger money, then put out this ultra-special mat that does all these great things later, when you have it ready?

It seems odd to release so many wireless phones, tease a wireless charging solution, then offer it up a year later.

I love Apple products and I'm not anti-Apple in any way. I see this as a marketing fail because it is.

I can’t believe that Apple will release new phones, iPads, AirPower and a wireless AirPod case in the same month. They have never done anything on that scales before. It would kill the load balancing of sales across all those devices
