I'm kind of done with the Max form factor and wanted to go back to normal this gen. I assume the Ultra will only come in the Max size at first? Will it trickle down to the normal next year?
rumor seems to indicate larger than Max size.

Just curious: is increasing profits bad? Does your employer not also try to increase profits?
I am retired. My last employer kept increasing profits til they destroyed the company. I never said increasing profits was bad, to keep stockholders happy the profits have to keep increasing. Hopefully Apple stays a strong company and does not get too greedy.

I see overall revenue since 2011 going in a postive direction, due to the way Apple is innovating.
Umm... yes, overall revenue is going in a positive direction but I wouldn't go so far as to claim innovating is the reason it's doing so.

Apple has a massive following along with a bankroll that can make miracles happen, even some of their product categories can be a business of their own. I'm not trying do discredit them for being such a great company, but I think their recent moves has been safe.

And I would categorize innovating as being on the cutting edge and discontinuing the original HomePod only to bring it back is not something I'll call innovating.

When I bought my latest PC last Year from Dell, there was at least 8 different options, now there are 19 for the XPS and you can customize the pc to your liking, maybe in the future we can do that with phones

This is a weak idea and I hope it’s just a leak from Apple trying to gauge the appetite for something like this.

Adding an Ultra iPhone tier will create stagnation in the Pro line, as the Pro line did with the non-Pro line. I think we will also see something similar with Apple Watch Series 9 this year - no major changes, maybe a new chip. The same thing happens with the iPad Pro and Air lines too. Any big design and functionality features will lag 2-3 years for the non-Ultra lines, sometimes much longer.

We know we won’t see major differences in iOS, aside from software tweaks to support new hardware features in the Ultra. Apple has time and time again proven incapable of innovating when supporting multiple OSes. See iPadOS and iOS being essentially the exact same thing (stage manager is the only semi-interesting thing that separates them right now), despite the separation in naming convention a few years back.

Also, I refuse to pay $2k for what amounts to another candy-bar-slab-of-glass phone. I want to see some actually innovation (foldable, stretchable, etc). Ceramic is not innovation and neither is a “rugged” iPhone. It seems to me that AR/VR glasses will be their next big bet and iPhone is going into autopilot until we see how the glasses pan out.

A new high end phone. Because clearly $1500 isn’t high end enough for Apple’s bean counters.

The smartphone market is more diverse than ever and not everyone wants or needs all of the bells and whistles that can come with a high-end phone so why should they have to pay for them?

Having different models with different features and prices allows consumers to better pick and choose the phone they want rather than have to take and pay for things they may not want or need. Those that only need SE level functionality can spend $429 while those that want more can choose to spend more.

Hopefully each model will be competitively priced for what it offers but if not, consumers should certainly consider alternatives that may better meet their usage and budget needs.

Bottom line, more choice can be a good thing.

Kind of a sneaky way for Apple to get people to pay more for what essentially should be the new Pro Max model. But instead they’ll just add the “Ultra” name and give it one more feature than the Pro Max. Bwah-ha-ha! 😈

LMAO how stupid we were to think the Ultra would replace the Pro Max when all along Apple intended to release a Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra.

i am so done with Apple. they are bleeding everyone dry during difficult economic times but oh no think of the poor shareholders who have to deal with a 5% decline in profits!!!

i'm going back to Android when my 12 pro max starts slowing down or breaks.
I have adpoted strategy of buying 1 yr old devices. This year, I upgraded from iPhone X to a brand new 13 Pro Max for almost 1/2 it’s launch price. This 13 Pro Max behaves identical to iPhone X, maybe smoother due to 120hz and better SOC. The overall look of iOS is kinda same-same since iOS 7. Maybe for iPhone Ultra, I will change my strategy and get it after 2 years for 1/2 or even lower it’s launch price.

I am sure there are many like me.

I don't like this move, basically shifting the entire lineup, forcing budget range to move into mid-range pricing.

I'll end up buying an older model, I'm not paying C$2000 for a phone. That is ridiculous. C$2000 is 4–5 months of groceries.

Good. Would be surprised if there are camera improvements as well.

It's nice having options.

Apple only very marginally cares what any individual wants, so I won't add to the list of complaints that this is dumb or not what I want. Apple takes a keen look at sales trends and make iterative decisions based on those trends, self-correcting when the lack of a crystal ball necessitates a revision to plans. This is exactly what Apple should do, in service to its shareholders and its market as a whole. As the largest company in the world, it is (so far) demonstrably doing a very, very good job at this. The rumor here suggests Apple has determined that it may not yet be picking the highest fruits on the tree, and that going for those fruits would be worth the risk and effort.

After upgrading from the iPhone X to the 12 Pro, I have decided to sit out upgrades for four to 6 years. Rather than buying a lower end phone and upgrading every couple of years, I am spending more money on the phone I buy and upgrading less often. I am pretty sure I am not alone and Apple is aware of this. If in 2024, the 16 offers a premium phone that has sufficiently better capabilities for another couple hundred bucks, I'd consider it over a Pro.

What is higher than Ultra? Uber dooper fast? Please just perfect the devices you have (Which you can barely sell or you have supply chain issues) and slim down. Kinda feels like Apple is going back to the days in the 90s before the Ipod came out.

What do people who have wired CarPlay do when their iPhone has no port?

I use a device called carplay2air as I hate plugging my phone in to the car. Far more convenient as I get to use my current head unit. I just get into the car and it's up and running in a few seconds automatically. Plus I can take if from car to car if it has wired only car play as its just a tiny little USB device, been using it for a few years.

This would be one step too far IMO unless it is significantly different, like a folding phone. The PROs do a fine job at satisfying the high-end consumers as it is, and few will spend more than what the PROs cost now.

What Apple should really do is a new lower-end model. Something with 1 camera on the back and an selfie camera, and maybe starting at 32GB. Good for kids and the older folks who don’t need a ton of bells and whistles.

Apple appreciates everyone's input in this thread's focus group with deciding if/when they will introduce this new addition to the iPhone family.

I had to have a new phone and bought the 13 Pro Max at full price. It will be 2 years this fall and I have no desire to upgrade. The battery is still great and the phone works and looks as good as the day I bought it. I absolutely need an iPhone and I’m pretty much going to take the strategy you talk about here: buy a previous gen phone at a lower price. The upgrades in recent years just aren’t worth it

"Considering" is the ultimate cop out

"Hey Mark they didn't do it! What gives?"
Ah yes, but they considered it!
"Did they?"
Internally. In secret.

Innovation is a sliding scale around here. Not everything a company does has to be innovation. Sometimes improvement is what is called for. And because another company may have done something first, doesn’t mean apple hasn’t innovated; eg Face ID.

But I do call emergency satellite SOS and crash detection on the phone innovations.

How much more high-end can we get ?.. I suppose the 15 uber max ultra pro may come with a charging brick.. because the 'ultra high end' users will really need it..
