Gurman: iPhone 14 Models Without Notch, Redesigned MacBook Air With M2 Chip, and More to Launch in 2022

Have there been any more rumors about what to expect from the iPads Pro this year? I held out on the new MacBook Pros because, I could make do with M1 power, but I would love the nicer display. The iPad Pro seems to fit nicely somewhere in the middle. Any rumors about a larger screen on the largest variant?

What’s the point of the wireless charging for an iPad? Isn’t it less efficient and producing more heat in the process? 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think your post requires more specificity. This isn’t a claim you can make, given how unpredictable Apple is. You don’t know that touch ID might be re-formatted where it’s implemented differently. (I-e-Embedded under the display.)

Furthermore, don’t you think Apple has taken into account not everybody owns an Apple Watch? Yes it’s a workaround, but it’s an accessory to the iPhone. As popular as it is, it’s not a valid argument when it’s compared to the popularity of the iPhone.

Plus, we do know Apple hasn’t entirely removed touch ID from their products, especially given there’s another rumored iPhone late spring 2022 that very may well include Touch ID similarly to the iPhone 8 build.

That is true, I should not speak in absolutes, as I don’t know Apple’s plans but it seems like Apple has decided to differentiate biometric security between flagship devices and more budget friendly options just looking at iPads and iPhones. I think once the hardware can be shrunk down, FaceID will be added to the MacBook Pros.

I held off on getting the Pro Max and got the base 14" instead because my workflow software has yet to optimized for Apple Silicon. Most 3D rendering, 3D modeling, CAD has yet to be optimized and lag behind Intel. Even the 3D slicing software I use has yet to be optimized to Apple silicon, so I look forward to seeing how the new Mac Pro adrersses these shortcomings.
The Mac Pro will not address a developer’s shortcomings.

It really doesn't make a lot of sense since the 12.9" iPad Pro has a huge 40 Wh battery that needs a 20W charger.

Charging it wirelessly would take ages even with MagSafe (yes, it being 15W makes a huge difference when you're charging a 40 Wh battery)

Obviously, it's nicer to have more charging options than fewer. But it seems like wasted effort.

I'd much rather see the MagSafe found on the new MacBooks jump to iPads Pro, and also faster charging and even better batteries. But I doubt that.

I only really see them putting MagSafe in iPads Pro if the magnets are stronger as this could maybe lead to a new generation of iPad Pro MagSafe accessories.

Apple seems reluctant to do anything major with iPads which makes sense since they're still crushing the tablet market.

I hope the iPad Pro comes out in the spring if it does will trade in my 2018 ipad pro 11 inch to get it
There’s no reason for Apple to update the iPad Pro for at least another 12-18 months. The M1 is ridiculously fast now and the current iPadOS and crop of “Pro” apps don’t even take full advantage of your 2018 iPad Pro, much less the M1. Don't spec chase.

My Apple purchases from last year (2021):
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro
  • AirPods Gen 3
  • AirTags
Planned purchases for 2022:
  • iPhone 14
  • AirPods Pro Gen 2
I am content with the laptop. I am not going to upgrade it for at least the next 5 years. My iPhone X is getting pretty stale and if Apple does jump onto the pin-hole front-facing camera bandwagon, I'm upgrading for sure. The last 4 iPhone releases didn't really have any substantial changes that would entice me to upgrade and the iPhone X is running quite well, 4 years after its release. So, we shall see.

I’ll probably get the iPhone 14 Pro which will replace my 12 Pro. Depends on the notch going away, USB-C and camera improvements (48MP). Maybe AirPods Pro 2 and Apple Watch Series 8 if it gets the redesign that was rumored for the Series 7 which I did end up purchasing over the holidays as my first Apple Watch.

I hope they get rid of the camera bump. It is atrocious design. I don't believe Steve Jobs would have allowed it and I am surprised if Jony Ive did. Just make the phone a smidge thicker and remove the bump.

It could of been been worse 😄

I don't understand the "hate the notch" movement. The only thing I'm prematurely excited about is a larger iMac that Apple will not short change us and go batsh#t crazy with the price:rolleyes:

Good. I’m glad they’re getting rid of the notch and placing it under the screen. For us that have used Android phones with the hole punch design, we will greatly appreciate the iPhone having it.
Nope, FaceID is so much superior. I don’t mind the notch, if we can achieve the same security, speed, witho it it ok, otherwise notch is fine.

ipad pro with glass back would be heavier, so i dont think this is what will happen...probably magesafe is a safer bet
I agree, I really dont think wireless charging would be useful on an iPad. Magsafe will work better in my opinion.

My interest in on a better iPad OS and the ability to charge while using the iPad on an external monitor (if Apple finally addresses external display support). Apple seems to be paying attention to its customers recently and the terrible iPad OS on the last WWDC and everyone noting the lack of mac-apps and external monitor support should make the improvements this year.

I can see a hole punch camera that still permits Face ID:

A dual sensor camera with colour and infrared on the same silicon. A dot projector around the perimeter of the hole punch and a part or the entirety of the screen itself functioning as a flood illuminator.

I had told myself my 13 Pro would be my "longterm" phone...but...now I'm thinking "hmmm, economically, it probably makes sense to upgrade in 2022 because I get a better deal selling my 13 Pro the newer it is; thus justifying the cost of a 14 Pro"

Well, according to the article, its going under the screen, so the technology will still be there. I just don’t want to see the notch anymore.

Am I the only one who doesn’t like the squared off iPhones? I tried the iPhone 12 Pro last year and 13 pro this year. I can’t get past how uncomfortable it is to hold and use and I’ve tried many cases with them. My 2 year old iPhone 11 is just more comfortable. Aesthetically squared off is nicer to look it but not as ergonomic to me.

I’m seriously considering side grading to an 11 pro or 11 pro max to get a fresh battery and oled display to hold me over for a few more years.
