I'll take that for a dollar...
Obviously you are not the target market. If you took a photography class and had a passion for photography, you would be amazed at how great the product is and how inexpensive it really is. If your interest in photography is at a more basic level, I can clearly see your point. Why pay for something with all these features (and training) that you have no interest in using anyway?

I'd rather pay $30 than a life-long subscription.Though $30 is a bit steep...
It is a bit steep for most people. I almost bought Halide a week ago, but went with Camera+ 2 after reading some Halide reviews and I already had Camera+ (1).

If you are into photography, well, this is the reason some use an iPhone. If the app lets you perform far better than stock camera, then it's worth it. The cheapest point and shoot is $100 or so (Canon Elph).

And people pay how much to eat out once? People throw away money left and right. So I assume this app is priced right to the right people.

Does anyone know if I go the subscription route with this, will family sharing still work the same as it would if I purchased it?

When you pay +$/€ 700-1400 for the camera… $/€ 32 is a fair price for an excellent camera app for pro users. If you think its too much you can just use the default camera app or some other alternatives.

I use ProCam and Camera+ 2. This new app here seems good if you are into RAW. There's other bells and whistles. I downloaded it, but no try before you buy.

Does this Mark II app contain the features of Spectre or is that still a standalone app?

I like Halide and have used it since release. However, I am not going to pay $9 a year after the free year offered. They also offer a one time fee of $30, in a person doesn’t want to subscribe.

Edited to add: Restore purchase doesn’t work for me after a fresh install.

It's a joke. :)

People spending $1000-$1500 on iPhones because 'better cameras' then complaining about a $30 app. sigh.
I'd say people have every right to complain for that exact reason. Spending $1500 because and yet the stock app is so bare-bones and underpowered that they have to fork out even more money to properly utilise the cameras....

Look at all you cheap ass bastards in the comments. You pay a thousand dollars for a phone but refuse to support excellent software. Shame on you. A $30 one time purchase is a totally reasonable price.

Considering the price before was a one time purchase at around a max of $8, the jump to $30 for some is going to be a huge jump.

Some people are buying the phone and will keep it for 5 years. Some people aren't buying the $1000 phone and are buying the SE or something like that because that's what they can afford. Applying the same logic to everyone doesn't make much sense.

32€!!!!! Hahahahahahaha oh god I can’t stop laughing. Are they joking or what?! Oh my god, that is insane! Whoever pays for that is nuts. Total rip off. They should be ashamed of themselves!
This is way better than, other crappy apps charge a monthly subscription. People, happily, pay 100s of dollars/euros for the phone, but cringe when it comes to paying good developers.

Honestly, iPhone Pro being Pro, and with the time Apple spent on talking about the camera at the keynote, I feel the stock camera app should've achieved much more...

Pathetic. I bought Halide and Spectre, never really found a use case for the latter and honest to god the former isn't anything special. There's a whole bunch of .dng taking RAW photo apps, which are all not great as you can't use Apple's algorithms. Either go .heic with the native app or wait for a ProRAW iPhone 12 Pro but this Halide stuff isn't worth this kind of money. And a subscription on top of what I paid? Hahahahaha

Halide is pretty solid IMO. I also bought Spectre, but its photos are nowhere near usable. Apple's own Night Mode is way better.

You do realise "Apple's algorithms" are included in Halide don't you?

"Coverage takes a photo with all of Apple’s smartest processing: that is, Smart HDR 3, Deep Fusion, the works — and then also snaps a RAW DNG and saves it all in one file. So you can shoot first, and ask questions (like “Do I want to edit this as a RAW file?”) later."

Also, their InstantRAW feature sounds really sick: "Instant RAW develops your RAW file in one tap. Just like how Smart RAW helps Halide expose RAW correctly using Machine Learning, with Instant RAW Halide goes through a 17-step process of intelligently developing your file to get the best possible result. It’s optimized differently for different iPhones; it enhances detail and color; and above all, it’s neutral."

People are just throwing stones for the sake of it without doing any research whatsoever about what this update does. And the sad thing is, a lot of these people bought the app for $8 and get to keep it for free forever.

I would advise people read through this blog post detailing what is new in the new version: https://blog.halide.cam/introducing-halide-mkii-30f9f2bceac3

I personally was very impressed and can't wait to try it out.
