I think the following posts from the first page of the first iPhone 4 leaked photos on macrumors are interesting:

I am guilty of disliking the iPhone 4 when it leaked..but when I ordered, and it arrived at my house, and I opened it and saw it with my own eyes, it was the most beautiful phone I've ever handled. I expect the new iPhone to be the same way, except it like the design already.

Yes I knew him personally. We use to drop acid together.

Of course not. Sigh. But as designer and "student" of Apple's design it is fair game to speculate (yes speculate sir) that he would not approve of this. This has COO turned CEO written all over it. Cook doesn't have vision. But damn right he's the guy to temporarily fill the shoes. Sadly if products keep looking like this Apple will lose some if their cache.

When the 4s came out there were loads of stories that Steve was working on this generation of phone. Its beyond Ridiculous the "Steve wouldnt approve" posts. Stop taking Acid.

The phone is made entirely of plastic because the whole casing looks very plasticky and fragile. This is fake I think.

I've had each iteration of the iPhone and this will be the first that I will want to cover with a case. The duotone back is hideous. Very apparent that this design is post-Jobs. He would NEVER approve an aesthetic like that.

Have you forgotten what the original iphone looked like, which you apparently owned.

This has to be a deliberate leak by Apple. No way this video gets out otherwise. Even though I like the design they're showing here, this has to be a fake or different version leaked by Apple to throw competitors off.

Though I don't believe it is a leak,i sincerely hope it is. these leaks of new products, i.e. iPad Mini, or this iPhone five thing, are really killing Apples sales, and therefore their market share penetration. it's letting really crappy android devices maintain momentum, and if google gets lucky and stops executing so poorly... there could be real trouble. Not that I'm saying they will (Because I don't think they will), but if. And now we have HD video leaks?!?! WITH serial numbers?!?!? I seriously hope this is on purpose, or this is getting really bad...

Not to mention this thing is fuuugly. Two-tone? Really??? Although it is interesting that a ton of people thought the iPhone 4 leak was ugly...

if this is the true new iphone can someone explain what is the added benefit of a different aspect ratio to the phone?

No added benefit for the customers, just the cheapest way of achieving 4" screen size (which is a must on the paper these days) without introducing a completely incompatible screen resolution or rewrite the ppi definition of "Retina".

Yes, there are more pixels, but not where they are needed (both in height and width) and I'm pretty sure that most Apps will solely use them for permanent iAds.

According to some reports on twitter, the entire phone is nearly as thin as just the metal band on iPhone 4s. That's insane.

Well, one thing's for sure - when we actually see the next iPhone, whatever it's called and whatever form it takes, there will be a lot of gloating or humble-pie-eating from both sides here.

I'm placing myself firmly in the fake design/fake leak camp with either "New iPhone" or "iPhone 5" moniker. I'll happily call myself an idiot if wrong, as long as I can gloat to the "This is definitely the next iPhone" and "OF COURSE IT WILL BE CALLED iPHONE 6!!" brigade if they're wrong. Handily we all have a posting history that's visible... :)

Unfortunately I think this is the iPhone we'll be getting come September. I don't like it much. As an avid Apple fan that's difficult to say.

I think it lacks vision, innovation and cryptically, ambition. Ive too in love with his own design?

Looks wise it's poor, but it will be in a case for most people. So I guess it's really just about the screen and internals!!

Bingo!!!!!

iAds thats the answer

Tim fails hard this time. Wouldn't be surprised to see him in the news with a bullet in his brain.

Are you for real?!? Why would you even post something like that on a story about a possible new iPhone?

Some people really need to get a life.

RTP.

And people say it's not enough of a redesign?

20% thinner? New silver metal casing?

What more do you want? i think some people are just disappointed it doesn't look like a 4" Ipad. :p

It is a clone or fake part. Even previous prototype leaks had model numbers and other text where Apple places the regulatory text on finished models on the back. The iPhone text is also the wrong font.

There is a lack of symmetry on the bottom and moving the headphone jack would gain you nothing.

We will have to see come september who is right but I am predicting that I am right. This is either a red herring to catch a leaker, fake created based on rumours or a chinese clone part.

if this is the true new iphone can someone explain what is the added benefit of a different aspect ratio to the phone? We have 5 phones with one aspect ratio and now it is being changed b/c it is better way to make a phone?

There are a lot of reasons. You can maintain the iPhone 4's pixel density. It's 16:9, roughly, good for video. It's easier for developers to target, and modify their apps. It's also easier for backwards compatibility, as an app that has not been modified won't be stretched in any way, you'll just get black bars at the top and bottom. There have also been arguments made that a wider iPhone is harder to navigate one-handed, although that is debatable.

Why have no other phones done this?

Maybe because it's more expensive, since it's not a standard size?

Does anyone find it odd that we have seen numerous leaks for the housing, but no leaks for the internals? Usually by this point there have been several hardware leaks. Right now we have a good idea of what it may look like but we are all clueless as to why there is a two tone back, we don't know anything about the processor, ram, storage, battery, etc. Am I the only one that finds that odd?

The processor is made in Texas, I believe. Perhaps it is easier to ramp up security there than overseas? Don't know about the other parts.

There were no leaked parts last year for "a tapered iPhone" it was renders and case manufacturers releasing cases. All of the leaked parts last year were for the 4S. People kept denying it saying that the iPhone 5 was being well guarded.

Fast forward to this year... part leaks... for taller iPhone. THIS IS THE iPhone that will be coming out!

Ah, good point. I had thought there were part leaks for that tapered design. There's always the remote chance that the part leaks are a deliberate decoy, but you're probably right.

Can't wait for this new iphone. At&t 2 year contract, 5gb of data w tethering lock it down :D

Are you serious? Why?

The only reason I can think of is that you are so ensconced in the Apple ecosystem that you don't want to leave. This design is , to put it bluntly, insanely stupid and there are so many great alternatives with much better screens.

Come on atleast it won't look like a 4 if you have the 4S now. :p

Yeah but it was at least an all-new design. Haters of the new 5/long design are not saying the design is ugly: just that it's like what we already have so they want something new.

Seriously, we need a tech forum equivalent of Godwin’s Law for any statement like “Steve Jobs wouldn’t have allowed this” or “this never would have happened if Steve Jobs was alive.”

As soon as anyone invokes this law they must be booted out by the admins unless they can prove their points with, for example, a signed letter from Steve Jobs, written on his death bed, stating exactly what he would have done in this instance.

I also want to say its a fake because unlike when the iPhone 4 was leaked Apple is asking/suing for the parts back. With that said I could care less if this is the next iPhone because I'll be buying it.

Well, I will admit it does look better in the video. The "gunmetal" finish in the photos looks blacker in the video, lessening the color difference/transition on the back somewhat.

I'm still in the camp that this is a testing prototype. The fact that the volume buttons show the minus going both directions while it's a solid part makes me wonder if there are two parts for the volume button for the design team to decide on. I still don't believe they would final production with that back, just not on par with Apple's design esthetics. Then again, it was mainly Steve that didn't want to settled for "close enough" engineering dictating design.

What I think this shows is that people like to complain and will find something to moan about whatever happens.
