Indeed. I thought that was very interesting. :apple:
No it is just logic.
Since ipad doesn' t have 3dtouch, haptic feedback, and a force touch homebutton/touchid, it will keep the headphone jack, since there is still enough space in the Ipad, and for the ipad it isn' t as necessary to add waterproofing as a smartphone.
When it gets these features, it will be a different story.
I think apple has carefully planned the elimination of the headphone jack on the iphone.
The iphone 7 was sacrificed for the iphone 8/x receiving too much bad press, and bad publicity, since there definitely wouldn' t be enough room in the iphone 8/x for a headphone jack with the borderless display, virtual/in-screen force touch homebutton, etc.
Since the iphone 8/x will have a wireless charging option, there will be a possibility to use the lightning port while charging, so it will be less of an issue.
In 2 years: no more headphone jack in the ipad.

I'm really impressed with the 10.5 iPad Pro. Best Apple product I have purchased since 2013 when I bought my MacBook Air. I'm hoping the 2018 MacBook Pro will match my expectations as well.

I really dont need this over the cheap iPad to do what I need...but i really like that larger screen and latest Touch ID. Just seems a waste for 2x the price for media consumption :(

It's not just a media consumption device anymore. With Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, it's better than the Mac in many ways. A lot of older iPad users don't realize how far the iPad has come with just those 2 accessories; and iOS 11 will take it to another level.

They call it a pro ipad not a pro super powerful desktop computerpad..

Aslong as any profession can use it to make money its a valid name (for example digital artists/designers or any profession that an ipad with pencil support can improve the workflow of)

It is just mind blowing how many people are bothered by the pro name in an ipad.

They rather had apple call it: ipad works with pencil thingy, or that the Apple Pencil should have worked wit the cheap ipad also(wouldn' t be so cheap then, wouldn' t it?)
The pencil and screen tech is faster and more advanced than most much more expensive competitors and the socs just blows some full x-86 laptop CPU' s out of the water, that makes it , for example, a very good device for graphic pro' s.
By calling an IPad Pro, apple doesn' t mean it is just as powerfull as a renderfarm.

Come on: why so upset by a name? Ipad mini(for now), ipad and iPad Pro.
MacBook -MacBook Pro
iMac -IMac Pro
Ipad-Ipad Pro,

It just means that the pro's have better specs and more possibilities than the regular device. That's all.

I made the mistake of playing with it in the Apple Store today. I don't "need" it - my 9.7" iPP isn't that old, but the screen is sharp and beautiful. I used the Pencil with Procreate, and it was very nice, but I think touch latency is not improved and may be worse. When trying to move layers in Procreate, I had a much harder time getting it to work - but is the reason the touch or does the app need to be updated.

I played around with Procreate on my 10.5 for a bit with the Pencil, I didn't notice any difference in latency from Notes. Maybe (as another person replied) they didn't have the latest version.

What competition? There's no tablet market, just iPad market. Same goes for Apple Watch and the iMac barely had any competition till 2016, and ZOMG! the AirPods.

Right. That much be why all those Surface ads keep mentioning the iPad. No tablet market at all. It may be small, but it's big enough for Apple and MS to participate in. 7% of Apple revenue is still a big number.

Beautiful hardware, but the fact remains, iOS absolutely positively sucks for any sort of productivity tasks so you're basically dropping a ton of $ to browse the web (and you can't even change the default browser to Chrome) and consume media, which can be done just as well on the "cheap" iPad or a zillion cheaper Android alternatives.

Why? For what purpose? Apple upgraded the camera to the same configuration as the iPhone 7 camera With a flash. Lots of iPad users still use the camera and it has its advantages more than it's a disadvantage.

I think the major reason I could see is the fact that it doesn't lay completely flat with the camera bump on the back, plus the possible increased cost. I do have a friend who has a previous gen pro that finds the bump slightly annoying. But I do get that people use it, it honestly makes me curious about how many who do.

Biggest hesitation for me on the pro 10.5 is the price. I know there's quite a few features and 120hz is quite smooth, but as stated here before it is 2x the price of the 9.7. Is it something I really need? Not to mention the keyboard and pencil price. But it is cool..

I am trying gout the 10.5", just got it. Not sure I can go back from the 12.9"

However, I will say this...the 120HZ screen is EVERY bit as good as people say it is. Damn good.

I just got a 12.9" today and the first thing I noticed was how blazing fast it is. Wow. Second of course is True Tone display. Really amazing. So much better than night shift.

Played with it in the Apple Store tonight and my God that screen......

Literally makes my 9.7 pro look and feel like garbage haha

Is it recommended to use a screen protector for this if we plan on using Apple Pencil a lot? I can't stand scratches on the screen and am hoping this one doesn't scratch easily.
No the Pencil will absolutely not scratch the screen. That would be the worst design of anything ever.

Plenty of people use glass protectors though just for other scratch protection though

Fun fact: if you go to the Blur Busters website to check the refresh rate of the display on Safari on this iPad, it says 60 Hz instead of 120 Hz because content in Safari is not played back at 120 Hz for some reason.

(Also yes, Safari is optimized for V-Sync so the test is working fine.)

iPad Pro 9.7 was a lemon. The 2017 10.5 should've been what the 9.7 was but is the new one fast enough to software decode 1080p 10bit HEVC out of the box or is it still laggy like the 9.7?

For comparison, a $46 Odroid C2 can do 4K 10bit HEVC at higher bitrate.

Picked up two 256GB 10.5's today. I cannot believe how much better this is than my 12.9 pro. I was certain it couldn't get faster but it did. The screen is gorgeous and input lag is ... where is it?

I'll test my SD card reader when it arrives tomorrow. Too much involved in those dongle adapters. One could be bad and throwing off results.

So, you are comparing hardware assisted decode to software decode, and complaining that the software decode doesn't keep up?

I'll also point out that the A9 does have hardware decode for 10-bit HEVC, but it won't be enabled until iOS 11. So I'd actually expect the 10.5" and 9.7" Pros to have similar decode performance once the hardware block is enabled.

Sometimes I wonder when people will learn to research things instead of just watching random YouTube videos.

Apple didn't have the courage to get rid of the headphone jack on this thing?
It's
In the iPad forum, someone tested it and it is not USB 3 transfer speed for iTunes restore.

That really put me off from going for it
isn't the USB 3 speed only with USB-C cables? The standard lightening cord is only USB 2. I've never seen USB 3 lightening cables with the extra pins yet.

I tried to tell people this in another iPad related thread. They don't want to hear it. They want to be angry for no reason.
