Foldable are brilliant. Having owned a fold the concept is amazing! Can’t wait for the day Apple does the equivalent… that’s what stopped me. Too caught up in the ecosystem. Those who say they’re pointless.. give it a chance first, if you like iPads you will love the form factor!
I agree with you. One day Apple will create the perfect foldable iPhone and iPad. When that day comes, all these haters will realize that yes this is better. Especially when it works with the Apple ecosystem.

Maybe I'm looking at it wrong? These look an awful lot like phone sizes that fold down into half phone size and 2x the thickness.
No, that's the Flip in a nutshell. Twice the thickness is pretty much what it is, but given what dimensions are bigger, it takes up a lot less space in your pocket than a Pro Max phone, which is the size it is when unfolded. I wouldn't think I'd want it if I wore skinny jeans, but I *never* wear skinny jeans. :)

Apple not ready to release a foldable as it probably hasn’t solved the crease issue on the screen
I’ve seen the flip 3 and some of them suffer from that issue after a while

As a geek, I think the tech is very cool and I enjoy watching it develop. From a technology standpoint what Samsung is doing is very impressive. But in all practicality I just can’t come up with a scenario where I would prefer this to the current iPhone form factor.

I just don’t see what’s the killer app for foldables that will make them go mainstream.
There are times when I want a small thin phone (esp for pocketing) and other times I'd like to have a max size screen (shooting video, viewing movies, etc.) If Apple nailed the foldable tech aesthetically, and it was as thin as the current iPhones, I'd definitely bite.

I am curious how many situations there are where someone needs a small device that folds out to something bigger. I have a 12.9” iPad so a foldable phone would never replace it.
I'd say there are approximately 25-30 times a day where I am in a situation where I want my smartphone to unfold into a mini tablet, which is why I bought the Z Fold 3. It's really not that difficult to understand the advantage of having two devices in one, in this form factor. You've mentioned both the phone and tablet of the Fold being mediocre. I'm curious, have you owned a Z Fold 3, and if so, for how long? Oh yeah, and what's the screen to body ratio on the iPad Mini 6 again?

It seems that Samsung has not put regular phones on the back burner. I don't think there is anything to worry about there.
Sure, but I'm not concerned about Samsung — I don't use them))) It's Apple I'm concerned with! They are known for letting certain products/software just kind of drift along while they focus on something new.

Unless it can have two folds, like a sheet of paper. Maybe even smartphone airplanes are in our future :)

Oh boy, the Arrogance of the commenters here.. just amazing. Many probably were still in kindergarten or not born when cell phones first came out - and when the likes of flip phones were common.
Flip phones are huge in the Asian markets. Samsung I am sure are doing well there.

I'm with you on the visual crease. I'm less convinced on samsung "pushing the envelope" I mean Samsung is pushing this because they also develop the display technology... so its in their best interest if the foldable form takes hold. They would be the sole screen manufacturer for the first few generations, making them a huge bundle of money.

the technology is interesting... but it honestly just seems gimmicky. its simply a way to fit a bigger screen in your pocket or purse... but its not enabling any kind of revolutionary function. Until I see a meaningful function that a foldable screen enables, I'm not convinced that foldable phones will ever be mainstream.
What kind of revolutionary function should it have? The fact that you can get a mini iPad into your pocket is revolutionary. In a few years from now, these foldables will be lighter and thinner by advancing technology. Foldables will one day become the new phablet like the Note.

That crease and the susceptibility to scratching are simply untenable. Since the 12 with its Ceramic Shield I have not needed a screen protector to make my phone even heavier and I love it. No micro scratches. Some day this tech will be worth something, but it sure as hell isn't worth as much as an iPhone and iPad Pro COMBINED.
Do you carry an iPad Pro in your pocket?

Hey, don’t get your hinge in a pinch.

MR would never play faves like that. 😂

And exactly why would Apple put money into R&D on a feature they have no interest in right now? I know I’d let the company supplying my displays (that I’m already paying for) do the dirty work if that’s what floats their boat.
I would be SHOCKED if Apple is not doing any R&D in foldables. The display is one aspect of foldables but there are many other areas that Apple wants to solve.

This makes no sense to me as a phone. Maybe as a tablet if executed extremely well. Every time foldable smartphones come up, I try to imagine carrying around an iPhone that's half the size in one dimension, at least twice as thick, and that you have to twist around to see/use to its fullest extent. Phone technology would have to get a ton better before I'd consider such a device. Twice as thick, more moving parts to break. I didn't like the original flip phones and don't care much for flip phones part deux either.
You should check out the Huawei foldable phone. It's twice the thickness but fold very neatly. Do you think it will simply stop getting thinner given the advance in technology?

Yeah, whatever Apple makes is going to have at least 50 million in sales as a given. I don’t even know if there’s any vendors that are currently PRODUCING 50 million screens a year, much less with a low failure rate and high quality.

So a mediocre phone and a mediocre tablet. Seems to me this is more about tech geeks bored with smartphones now and looking for anything that might be different.
Foldable is Think Different. But I am going to guess that those who own foldables and love them would think that a slab phone is itself a compromise. And for them, a foldable is a compromise to get a larger screen that can still fit in the pocket.

Samsung this week launched its fourth-generation foldable devices, the $1,000 Galaxy Z Flip and the $1,800 Galaxy Z Fold. Though there's no sign of a comparable Apple foldable device on the horizon, rumors suggest prototypes are in the works, so we thought we'd take a look at Samsung's newest smartphones to see what Apple needs to measure up to when a foldable iPhone does come out.

Samsung's early foldable devices were riddled with durability issues and hinge-related problems, but Samsung has now had several years to work out the kinks. New hinge designs and body refinements have taken care of a lot of these issues, and the fourth-generation devices look and feel more durable.

The Z Fold 4 is the bigger of Samsung's two foldable smartphones, and it folds like a book, going from a 6.2-inch display to a 7.6-inch display. The Z Flip 4 is a smaller foldable that folds vertically, top over bottom, and it has a 6.7-inch display when opened up. When closed, there's a 1.9-inch display where you can see notifications, the time, and other at-a-glance info.

Both of Samsung's foldable devices feature 120Hz OLED displays that look fantastic, and the Z Fold 4 runs a special version of Android built for foldable devices. Android L adds a dock that makes it easy to swap between apps, and there are useful multitasking capabilities.

Beyond the novelty of the folding, these two devices have your general high-end smartphone features. Multi-lens cameras, high-capacity batteries that outlast the iPhone battery, the latest Qualcomm chips, under display cameras, fingerprint sensors, 5G connectivity, and more. Make sure to watch our video up above to see the folding mechanism in action and to get a look at the rest of the feature set.

We've been hearing rumors about a foldable iPhone since 2016 when LG Display started producing foldable displays for smartphones, but so far, there have been no tangible rumors about an iPhone that folds as such a device remains in the prototyping stage.

z-flip-4-2.jpg

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said back in January 2021 that Apple's work on an iPhone with a foldable display was in the early stages, and that the company had not yet committed to releasing a foldable device. Other rumors have indicated that Apple is testing 8-inch and 9-inch foldable options, but we're still years off from a release.

Both display analyst Ross Young and Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believe Apple has some kind of foldable iPhone in development with a launch planned for 2025 at the earliest. Apple often holds off on implementing new technology until the available hardware can meet the quality specifications that the Cupertino company demands, so it is no surprise to see Apple waiting for several years after the launch of foldable Android smartphones to launch its own.

The flip phones are so wide!!! I don’t like that size. Otherwise sure they are cool. I miss the original RAZR. That wasn’t so wide.
