Samsung is the king of smartphones right now. Apple is merely treading water with their devices at this point, so their finger print scanner is better. Get back to me when Apple produces a 1080p screen, gives even 1/2 of the camera features of the S4 or S5, gives me the option to touch my phone to pay for something, allows me to truly customize my screens how I want them and allows me the options to have more memory a larger batter or even the ability to wireless charge my phone. Oh and now not worry if I drop my phone in water for some reason.

These things may not = innovation but they sure kick the crap out of Apple at this point.

Not sure how you defined king, but consumers sure think Apple is king...

I'm not what what you consider treading water, but the iPhone 5S is still the top selling device at all US carriers. Apple just doesn't have as many options as Samsung does, but that will soon change. I know people who went Android only because they thought the iPhone was too small, but many of them have said they will buy another iPhone if it's bigger. Samsung is king only because they have so many different sizes available to suit everyone's needs. Once the iPhone is available in 4, 4.7, and 5.5, I don't think Samsung will stand a chance.

There will still be people who are loyal to Samsung and will buy only Samsung devices, and I have friends who are in that camp, but I think the majority of consumers who walk into a store will be more likely to buy an iPhone if it is the same size as an Android device because the iPhone, in my opinion, provides a better experience for the majority of consumers.

There are things I don't like about iOS, and a lot of people on this forum share those complaints, but the vast majority of consumers don't care about things like changing the default apps or having dozens of camera features. Most people just use the apps that come with the phone and take pictures in automatic mode.

Apple will always sell well here in the US. But anyone who is truly an unbiased person will tell you Apple hasn't don't anything to innovate in a market the once dominated in a very long time. The iPhone can't touch or do most of the things I want in a smartphone. Maybe Apple has something other than a larger display up their sleeve but at this point it doesn't seem like it.

I think most people who are tech savvy do want more from their phone than what the iPhone brings to the table. The iPhone is great for grandma and grandpa because its simple and basic. It will always be great for older people but it's the younger people who are leaving iOS for Android because of the things Android allows people to do.

1080p screens on smartphones are a gimmick and publicity stunt. Research it.

Why introduce a fingerprint scanner half ass? Do it right or don't do it at all.

Camera features can be added easily via cheap/free third party apps. No biggie.

Can't argue the customization piece.

Water resistance is another gimmick. Most folks don't live on a boat, hover around toilets and sinks 24 hours a day texting and talking. It does look good on the marketing pamphlet though!

What you are talking about has nothing to do with innovation. Samsung is the king of sales b/c of their wide variety of offerings, which many lack the innovation in their Galaxy line. I'm pretty certain Apple is still beating Samsung head to head, worldwide when you match up the iPhone and Galaxy lines.

And a person's choice of iPhone versus Android has nothing to do with being tech savvy... There is nothing tech savvy about having a 1080p screen, customizing your home screen, making payments w/ a system that hasn't really taken off and being able to charge wirelessly (does Samsung even offer this w/ the GS5?).

For those who are really tech savvy, I'd consider the people who use their Android or Windows phones for power computing, there are a few examples in this forum. But most others don't care about those capabilities.

Most people aren't tech savvy. I know Android users who can't even tell me the name of their device. I had a professor a few weeks ago tell me her phone was the Samsung G4. Yes, the G4 is what she called it. She acknowledged she was clueless about phones. My aunt has the S4, and it is her first smartphone. She doesn't have a clue what can be done with it. At the store they told her it was the best one, so she bought it.

I'm around young people at my university every day, and it seems very evenly split between iOS and Android. I'm taking IT classes and am around tech savvy people who use the iPhone. I have tech savvy teachers who use the iPhone. So, I don't think it is accurate to dismiss the iPhone as a phone for grandma and grandpa. Polls show that over half of teenagers in the US use an iPhone.

Like I said before, I think size is the only thing holding back iPhone growth. The things that you believe tech savvy users want are valid things that many people may want, but in the grand scheme of things I don't think it has as much of an impact as screen size. Once the iPhone has a big screen I think Apple will surpass Samsung in total sales. Time will tell.

Sales wise, I think Apple sells more iPhones than all of Samsung Galaxy phones combined. I could be wrong. I think you guys are getting confused with Android activation numbers which I believe are sketchy but that's another story.

I'm a techie as well and I personally don't see Android being more advanced or fit for the more technically inclined than iOS. It's a smartphone. Android gives you tons of options. If you like opening up settings and seeing 50 options to tinker, eat your heart out. I think most non-geeks don't want to tinker and updates ROMs on their phones. They just want a phone that does everything great and has a very intuitive interface. When I want to take a pic, I want a clean intuitive interface that allows me to jump in a capture that moment. I want the picture to be great without me having to adjust settings to make it great. iPhone does that. Who the hell wants to spend time troubleshooting a smartphone?

But I'll bet that when the iPhone becomes water resistant and has a 1080p or 4K or whatever screen it will be revolutionary. And by that definition, isn't Apple's 64 bit processor a publicity stunt too?

Apple will not release a water resistant phone. They will leave that to case makers where it makes more sense. They will focus on stuff that makes sense like scratch proof / more durable screen technology.

1080p will never come in an Apple product. Even the engineers that made the Moto X stated that it was a useless gimmick purely for marketing.

4K will come when it makes sense and is mainstream. 1. It takes up too much space. 2. Unless you got the big bucks to buy a TV or monitor that can handle that type of content, its limited to your phone which your phone can't even enjoy the 4K video it can record because it's only 1080p display.

64bit a gimmick? I don't think so. The iPhone 5s released 7 months ago still beats the Galaxy S5 in most benchmarks. Besides, all phones will be going 64bit, 128bit and so on.

Wow! You know a lot about Apple's future plans. Oh, and once again benchmarks only count when they favor Apple, otherwise they are meaningless, right?

Easy there! It doesn't take a rocket scientist to come to the conclusion that Apple will not waste time on gimmicks. Using past history as a guide, I think it's pretty obvious.

Apple didn't get caught cheating on benchmark test. Samsung did. Apple's phone is faster. No need to fret. Samsung will get 'em next release. Cheer up!

There is a difference between gimmicks and innovation, and with that said, Apple seems to lack both these days, IMO.

They won't make a water resistant phone the same they would never make a larger display (leaks seem to be heading that way).

64bit is a gimmick at this point because there is real no world use for it. It just isn't tangible.

Iphone wins in single threaded tests.

The moto x and SIII are not as crisp as the s4, the s5 is just brighter with more accurate color.

Your passion for Apple is admirable, and I understand that passion to a point but, there comes a time when the blinders must come off.

I don't really care what Samsung does. Apple losing it's cool has nothing to do with Samsung or any one else. IMO, they did it all by themselves. I don't worship Apple or any other company, and I realize that is an unusual point of view for this forum. :)

And don't forget, they'd never make a smaller iPad either. And they don't worry about their competition, even though the court documents show otherwise. And 3.5" was the perfect screen size for a phone. And then 4" was the perfect size. In a few months the perfect size will be whatever the new larger iPhone is. See how that works? :D

I wasn't being silly. A fingerprint scanner isn't innovative. Please tell me the last thing apple did to make a meaningful impact and influence the competition.

Not playing the fool's game on this whole "innovation" nonsense. It's silly and fodder for playing simple minded.

For one, it's not Apple's job to "influence the competition". That's a byproduct of making desirable products, which Apple has no problem doing.

They most certainly aren't. Go look at one, instead of reading about them.

Clearly you are confusing display technology (AMOLED) with screen resolution. Maybe you should read up a little yourself before chirping on a topic you don't fully understand. Just saying!

++++++ this ^^^^^^^
I don't worship any company either....Apple has always been the best at blending hardware and software. But lately the competition has caught up to them. They really need a home run with the IP6 and not just copy the rest of the competition with a larger screen........

Good post. Sadly in this forum, anyone that debates which product is of higher quality or superior is labeled a fanboy or has blinders on. Sigh.

The common statements are always made which are so over the top and ridiculous it leaves me speechless. You know the ones, "When Apple copies Samsung and incorporates ridiculous feature X, then Apple fans will consider it great or innovative." When you consider the fact that Samsung is the one copying Apple so blatantly and there is a legal battle going on to prove it just makes the whole discussion laughable. The other statement is that "Apple doesn't innovate anymore." Apparently Apple now is expected to innovate every year because they set the bar so high which anyone with common sense knows isn't even a reasonable expectation. No other company in the world comes up with innovative ideas yearly least of all Samsung. Most are lucky to have one innovative product in a lifetime but Apple is expected to do it yearly or the masses will get restless. Again, it's truly sad but hey, you can't argue with stupid.

Cheers!

I wouldn't say so, but I suppose the alternative is always going to hold some appeal. Almost every smartphone I see in the wild is an iPhone.

I think Samsung is just the safe alternative. People wanting something other than an iPhone might gravitate towards a Galaxy considering it's a name that's fairly recognisable, is known for having feature rich flagships etc.

Comon man if 1080P is a gimmick, 64bit in its current state is a gimmick too

can't argue with stupid huh? nice name calling, can't argue with bias either

Name calling? Please re-read my post. I'm stating that the idea that Apple is expected to innovate every year is stupid and not worth arguing.
