It's two separate services, one is based on a subscription to cable which you typically have to sign in through the provider to authenticate. This is cutting out the Cable provider.

I get that....but there could be one app. You open it and it says "Subscribe to HBO" (for HBO Now) or "Authenticate your Current Cable Subscription" (for HBO Go). So the one app works for both types of subscriptions.

Shows like The Walking Dead, Dexter, and Breaking Bad have had huge success and have a home on Netflix, HBO is full of **** thinking they need to have their own service rather than embracing services like Netflix.

I hear what you are saying, but no way is HBO going to embrace a service like Netflix or Hulu. That would kill their business. No one would pay for HBO if they could simply watch HBO content on another service for half the price.

Signed up one AppleTV, but can't log into the account I set up (error -1000). Seems HBO is having problems.

I can say this: If the quality I'm getting now doesn't improve, this will be a short-lived subscription for me. I'm on gigabit internet, and the video I've seen so far has a *lot* of compression artifacts...

looking at the screen shots, I couldnt tell, can you watch HBO live? The showtime app lets you watch showtime live which is nice for boxing events, etc.

Two questions.

Does HBO Now allow you to live stream a show while it airs?

If not, when will the show be available to stream? Day after? or Week after?

I want to see GoT at least day after if not live.

I'm not sure, but I would think at most it would be 24 hours. My guess is it could be as soon as the show finishes airing.

I'm wondering the same thing IF you can you must only be able to do that from an Apple TV I tried looking on my iPhone and I can't find it.

I signed up to be notified about the service a while back. Haven't heard a peep, until this article. Not a very encouraging start...

I'm guessing they are waiting for the flood of people hitting their servers to die down before they send out emails starting another one.

This is good news, but I'm finding cable is still cheaper because they bundle the internet service and give a substantial discount if you get tv and cable. Plus with cable at least I don't have to worry about bandwidth issues, lags, etc. I think pricing still needs to go down a bit until this is viable, unless you live in one of the few places which have internet service choices. Most of us are stuck with only one choice for internet service.

Unblock_Us are tweeting that they currently dont support HBO Now but working on it... So that will be the reason for no feed....(Outside of the US at least)

DirecTV was charging me $17.99 for HBO. This is $14.99 and it's paid for through iTunes. I often buy iTunes cards for 20% off. I will make sure I buy enough to cover this subscription, so effective new price will be $11.99. $6/month savings over what I used to pay.

Plus now it will be easier for me to turn on/off at will. My "must see" show has been RealTime so I can turn this off when it's on hiatus. I could do that through DirecTV, but it was a 30 minute painful phone call each time. Now I can go to iTunes and unclick "resubscribe automatically" or whatever it says under Manage My Subscriptions.

I think you are comparing cutting cable all together to trying to create an online equivalent through various subscriptions. With bundling, it may be hard to do that....but as time goes by you'll find lower internet only deals. I've already dropped home phone service (as have lots of people), CableTV is the next in jeopardy. Internet will be the only communication wire into most homes in a couple of years.

@MacinJosh, have you tried streaming a show yet? I was able to create an account in Canada, using unblock-us.com, but streaming fails with "no feed available" errors.

hey, i'm in canada, too. do you mind detailing how you signed up? it seems like it needs me to sign up through iTunes, but i don't have a credit card on file that's based in the US.

Unblock US are not yet supporting HBO NOW- look at their twitter feed. They are working on a fix!

well that sucks.. if its true..:(

I got around it by purchasing a US iTunes gift card - there are countless sites that will sell you one online). After you have the code, all you need to do is create an account on the US store. It's quite easy to do. I purchased a $15 card specifically for HBO Now.

i'm using something else. main concern is actually signing up for an account. can you only do it from an iPhone?

VERY similar

I'd have to go compare them, but I just got HBO Go a few weeks ago and they look super similar.

I have my internet through the cable company and whatever offer I had just went up to $54, I was able to drop it down to $50 and get HBO in SD (I don't even have a cable TV box hooked up). So in essence they're paying me $4 a month for HBO Go (which is HDish).

You could argue that I'm paying too much for my internet now, but I could look at it as paying $40 for internet and $10 for HBO Go/Now.

Soooo, the easiest method off the top of my head requires a spare email address that's not currently an Apple ID (you can cheat if, for instance, you use jdoe@googlemail.com instead of jdoe@gmail.com, but anyway).

Armed with an email address? Great. Go on iTunes on a Mac, sign out of the iTunes store, then look at the bottom (I think) for the country selection thingy and find the US. Once you see dollar signs everywhere, go to the App Store free chart and pick something at random. Once you hit 'get', it'll prompt you to sign in/up.

Sign up with your spare email address and follow through all the info. Because you tried to get a free app, the payment info screen will offer you a 'None' option. You still need a US billing address, but you can pretty much make this up. Once done, voila! You still need to pay, but there were websites that sold gift cards in USD last time I dabbled in this area. I can't vouch for any in particular but I'm sure they still exist, and presumably you can pay for HBO Now this way.

HBO is overvalued and this service is overpriced. It is cheaper to simply buy its top shows off iTunes every year then get this yearly subscription, there are only like 2 - 3 good HBO shows a year anyways.

Also you know at least one person that has The Wire, Sopranos, or any one of HBO's past top shows available to share.

Shows like The Walking Dead, Dexter, and Breaking Bad have had huge success and have a home on Netflix, HBO is full of **** thinking they need to have their own service rather than embracing services like Netflix.

This is what I prefer to myself.

Last year, I got a free one year of HBO and cancelled after just two months because I never watched anything on HBO.

I think the only show that I own on iTunes that was an HBO show was the Sopranos. There is nothing else on HBO that I even buy on iTunes.

iTunes and my ATV2 are the reasons I survived without cable for almost three years. I only got cable last July for football and have been to lazy to bring the box down to an Xfinity office to cancel.

I have for now hidden the HBO GO app on my ATV.
