I did not realize that most of the studios were BluRay exclusive. Guess that is good news for me since I just bought a Playstation 3. Too bad the Bourne series is only available on HD-DVD.

Don't worry, that will change soon. Universal and Viacom will give in sooner rather than later. Its far too much pressure on them economically as it would be a loss of income to stay in their current position. Just a matter of time before they find a way out or use the escape clause they had built in to the contract and either go dual format or just do as they should and switch sides putting HD DVD out of its misery.

That's already on there though. The red bit is Focus Features, owned by Universal.

Sorry, it looked like Miramax to me, so close together :)

In the Spring, expect to see the basic Toshiba HD DVD player closeout for $99.

In the fall, expect to see the new Toshiba Super Multi Blu player (plays HD DVD and Blu-ray) for $249.

Sony and others will have to follow suit. Which would you rather buy, a Blu-ray only player or one that plays everything???

Competition is good...

I'm happy blu-ray won, if mainly only because it is the far superior format in terms of technology. WHy switch now and again in 5 years when we have even higher HD capable television sets? Blu-ray covers us for a longer while.

HD DVD will have no content providers by fall, its dead.... no more players, no more software, gone. Toshiba won't waste any more money in to developing a dual player for a format that no one supports and won't sell. However it could be possible that they may make a BD player.

Have you missed the past 2 pages or are you intentionally blocking it out? Even if Universal and Vivendi decided to go dual format just to prolong HD DVD's certain death, why on earth would you buy in to a hardware format that only 2 studios make content for? I've got a bridge to sell you.

Well its basically over now and I an expect the other companies like universal(focus) and Paramount(crazy studio) to abandon ship anytime soon....well lucky thing for me I have more blu-rays than HDDVD.

I expect apple to announce support at macworld this year.

Bless

Not true. HD-DVD had more features such as picture & picture etc.. from the outset. This is nothing to do with 'best technology' but to do with who has the most $$$ to throw around.

Also nothing has WON just yet, though it certainly is looking closer to a conclusion, but remember May is 5 months away, which in terms of the way things swing is a long time.

Universal/Paramount signed up for 18 months exclusivity to HD-DVD, so that if anything means we have at least another 12-18 months of protracted skirmishing.

It certainly has cost the BDA a lot of money though...

Warner Swayed By $500 Million From The BDA

According to a trusted source that was close to the negotiations, Warner and FOX were working on a deal to go Exclusive to HD DVD as recent as last week. Our source tells us that Warner was only willing to go to HD DVD if FOX would go with them. Their thinking was if they just went to HD DVD by themselves, it would not end the format war. Early this week FOX was paid an undisclosed amount to remain exclusive to Blu-ray. With the FOX deal falling through, Warner had no choice but to accept the BDA’s $500 Million offer to go Blu-ray exclusive. We do wonder if FOX was just playing the HD DVD side, while having no intentions of ever switching.

So there you go...... As much as a lot of you get up in arms and accuse M$ of paying off developers to make games on the 360, the truth is ALL companies commit similar practices.

Its all about the $$$ and don't forget it.

You obviously missed the forum rules...

https://macrumors.zendesk.com/hc/en-us#Warnings_and_Bannings

Insults. Direct personal insult of another member, i.e., "You are an idiot." and all the variations. Why? Because this isn't grade school. People should be able to discuss or even dispute other's posts without insulting people. And the only purpose of a post like this is to incite other people. You may dispute somebody's opinion, but not attack/flame the person who stated it. There are a lot of other non-direct-personal insults that won't necessary get you banned instantly, but depending on the context/nature may lead to post editing, post deletion, warnings, or time-outs. They include telling people to shut up, or being extremely or repeatedly rude or sarcastic. Bottom line -- don't try to tick off others. Although we do not read Private Messages sent between forum members, the rules

Okay,

1) I see no personal insult; pointing out that something has been said ("Have you missed the last 2 pages?") is not a direct insult. He implied some naiveté with the bridge comment, but who cares?

2) It's a discussion. View it as a sport. A debate. A battle of wits. People who get uptight about perceived insults are silly. Don't invoke the rules; respond to his opinion with factual points showing why you are right to feel as you do.

Personally, I think it makes things more lively to bonk someone on the head when they say something stupid. It makes them less likely to say something stupid later on. I know, I've taken it before  and I never called the mods on any board unless the person was being genuinely offensive/angry.

Otherwise it's a childish "wah wah he called me inattentive and naive, mods go get him!" war. I just love how your response to Ed completely fails to actually address anything he said.

MRU, edit your post. You have false news/a bad source.

Warner Home Entertainment President Kevin Tsujihara says the studio took no pay-offs to exclusively back Blu-ray.
In a post-announcement conference call, Tsujihara flatly denied rumors that studio had accepted anywhere from 250M to $500M in exchange for dropping its HD DVD format support.
According to the exec, Warner's sole motivation in dropping its HD DVD format support was to ensure growth of the "category" and the long-term health of the industry.

HD DVD Cancelled their CES conferences.

Notice of CES Press Conference Cancellation by North American HD DVD Promotion Group

“Based on the timing of the Warner Home Video announcement today, we have decided to postpone our CES 2008 press conference scheduled for Sunday, January 6th at 8:30 p.m. in the Wynn Hotel. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

We are currently discussing the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluating next steps. We believe the consumer continues to benefit from HD DVD’s commitment to quality and affordability – a bar that is critical for the mainstream success of any format.

We’ll continue to keep you updated on new developments around HD DVD.”

and from Michael bay's official forum he posted:

Well another studio down. Maybe I was right? Blu ray is just better. HD will die a slow death. It's what I predicted a year ago. Now with Warner's down for the count with Blu Ray. That makes it easier for Wal-Mart to push Blu Ray. And whatever Wal-Mart pushes - wins. Hd better start giving out those $120 million dollars checks to stay alive. Maybe they can give me some so I can give it to my Make-A-Wish charity, just to shut me up. Have faith people Transformers will come out in Blu-ray one day!

I think this video is appropriate now

^mmm interesting. The 'BATTLE' (not the war) may indeed coming to a conclusion.

I read a report that pretty much all HD players from here on out will be combi-players. A great idea.

I don't mind which wins or loses as long as I can play the movies I have bought on both formats.

I just got Simpsons Movie on BD, and StarDust on HD-DVD so for me a combi player would be ideal I'm thinking.

you read a report that all HD players from here on out will be combi-players? based on these posts and your following posts why would anyone ever take something you say seriously? you obvioiusly google and google until you find some blogger who says exactly what you were googling for, and than you claim you "read a report"

its time to face the fact that hd-dvd is dead, no combo players, no playing your hd-dvd discs in the future (unless you opt to hold onto your existing player)

I seriously cannot believe you are still mentioning PiP and HD-DVD in the same sentence. it doesn't make it okay that you added "from the onset" as if that means anything....is it really an advantage that hd-dvd had PiP from the onset? how did that work out for them again? ohhhh yeah....the best technology just won the format war :D

Also nothing has WON just yet, though it certainly is looking closer to a conclusion, but remember May is 5 months away, which in terms of the way things swing is a long time.

what are you suggesting? Do you think boat loads of people are gonna run out and buy hd-dvd players and the last remaining waner titles now that they've gone blu exclu? hoping they re-defect? not everyone thinks like you my friend.

they are banking on people like you to eat up the existing stock for the next 5 months.

Universal/Paramount signed up for 18 months exclusivity to HD-DVD, so that if anything means we have at least another 12-18 months of protracted skirmishing.

universal/paramount? whaaaaat? unless you know something I don't Paramount was the only company to except $150 million dollars to be hd-dvd for 18 months....correct me if im wrong. (im not)

although I've known the skirmishing to be over for several weeks-months, (ask your fellow macrumors forums users such as: GFLPRAXIS, Abercrombieboy, madoka, and such)....you want to believe this will continue for 12-18 months....i would like to reiterate: they are banking on people like you to eat up the existing stock of duds.

Don't stop being an arrogant, ignorant poster with a chip the size of the colosseum on your shoulder.

You continually read my posts and fabricate and twist every sentence as if it gives you some form of twisted pleasure.

I have not said in any post that HD-DVD will win, I have reiterated so many times that I don't bank on either format for the future.

If you have such a problem with me - then as I have said before, simply stay out of MY threads and stop trolling.

funny that you only respond to one portion of my post . I have no chip on my shoulder, and I am not ignorant. I didn't ask you to post a bunch of lies and false information, I only corrected it when you had.

It makes me mad when people talk out of their ass to make themselves feel better. If you aren't "on a side" why do you continually bring up talking points for HD-DUD? PiP "from the onset" for example. still think this is a an advantage for them? :D

You are a joke, you start a thread called 'BluRay and HD-DVD news/discussion' and when someone lists some accurate news in the thread you ask them to leave. Like I said, if you made sound posts I would not be forced correct you and do this.

notice when I respond, I qoute your entire posts and do not manipulate or "twist every sentence" you wrote. I would love to hear a response from you regarding my previous post. Since I am "arrogant and ignorant" I must have said something untrue, right? No, you can't disagree with any of it and childlishly disregarded it. (proof=not defending your post)

at least I form a somewhat articulate (not giving myself a medal in grammar) complete response with facts and point by point comparison when i post. I could have easily just qouted you, and said "your arrogant and ignorant" (like you choose to do). BUT instead, I showed you (by posting an actual response) and everyone else, that you are truely ignorant.

You try to but the BR fanboyism that emits from your posts detracts from the quality and respect one can give them. Especially when you call it "HD-DUD". Spell checking (whilst minor) can also improve the quality of your posts.

That is all.

thats why i said "somewhat articulate" :) did you miss that part?

the 'dud' is intentional, the format truely was, is, and always will be a dud. :D

I'd hardly call it a dud as it gave BluRay a run for it's money (apparently quite literally too).

It's a shame that BluRay is likely to win now. I wanted a region free format, so it looks again like Digital Distribution is going to be my HD delivery method.

Like I told you on MSN; DD will be great for a place like England, but it won't be standard any time soon. I can drive ten minutes north and be in an area where internet is not available, and there's towns/cities north of me where you can't get any internet access. People who live in Australia have to deal with ISPs that limit the amount of gigabytes they download, making downloading large videos impractical. And a lot of Americans either can't comprehend downloading movies and streaming files (older folk) or just like the feel of packaging better.

Until the AppleTV or similar device comes down in cost to be similar to a regular DVD player, the average consumer will not buy. Except in England, where you're all spoiled with tech :)

Oh I'd hardly say we're spoiled :D still on a 512kbps connection myself. It's just cities and towns where you get lovely super fast 16-24mbps connections. A not so tech-savvy friend of mine had a 21mbps connection for about a year before he even used it :(

Wouldn't mind a faster connection. My steam library is increasing and there are so many games I need to download on it, but on 512 it'd have to be many overnight downloads.

But pretty much everyone in England can get cable or DSL, which is my point :)

21 mbps? :( I want that so badly.

So you're walking right into MS's money trap! Soon you'll be in leeching distance as they require you to pay to play and rent all of your media, but never own it. For me that's worse than region locked.

Recall this blurb from Michael Bay of why MS was even in this market. It sounds like something MS would do, their history definitely backs it up.

Anyway, ding dong the witch is dead! :D

Yeah Ireland is very bad for telecommunications structure too. We've been waiting 6 years for our exchange to be updated to support DSL and we are still waiting.

We use alternative method at the studio/home (not satellite, but an aerial on the roof regardless) and I have 3G mobile broadband when I'm in town at my apartment.

But there are plenty of places that can't recieve anything other than dial up.

Even then we pay silly prices for measly speeds €45 per month ($66) for 1.5mb down, 512k up.

I'm hoping that at least we will see some speed boosts in the next year or two even if we don't see any price cut.

What about Sony and their Rootkit fiasco :D I don't really trust either as far as DRM and harmful anti-piracy measures.
Was it it not Sony audio CD's that had some kind of protection that if you played them on your PC it would emit some speaker damaging frequency?
