Does anyone happen to know if the stainless steel gold version of the Apple watch can be polished like regular silver stainless steel? I've been able to polish scratches off my stainless steel iPhone X--and it's kinda cool to make it look new again. I'm assuming the gold is some type of coating which would rub off when you try to polish it, but thought I'd see if anyone knew.

I can tell you how long it will last. My Spring 2015 Series 0 42mm Stainless Steel Apple Watch is not eligible for the new WatchOS this month. Lucky for me, right underneath where the buy button would be is an option to trade in my Apple Watch toward a new one. I input my serial number, and they are offering me... $25... o_O

AGREED! My first generation SS watch cost $1100 w/link band. Three years later (and no longer covered by Apple Care), the glass screen has become detached and Apple says it can't be fixed. And, even if it wasn't broken, it's not even eligible for the latest software update. I think the SS looks nicer, but I can't justify spending the extra money this time around. Being technology, we will want something new in 2 years anyway.

Can't really justify spending $100s on a watch that has only 18 hours battery life. That just doesn't work for me - a real show stopper.

This was the part in the keynote when Timmy said "We want to serve everyone" He meant he wants Apple to collect people's money all over the globe on a grand scale, all at once.

I love my Stainless Steel series 0 watch. It still looks great. But it is now obsolete, unable to get the new WatchOS this year. A little over 3 years, and Apple is offering me $25 for it. It is hard to justify getting another SS watch, so I will have to go with the aluminum so that my 'rental price' for the next couple of years is lower. And I say rental because the resale value of these watches are really low compared to reselling an iPhone. Sure, SS and sapphire are more durable. But since I'm not keeping the watch for 5+ years due to the OS upgradability become obsolete well before then, durability is less of a concern.

I think I’ll continue with my stainless steel series 0 watch. It cost £519 and I don’t fancy paying £749 for series 4 stainless steel one. If it had been £519 I would have been interested in upgrading. The cellular connection isn’t of any interest to me.

Does anyone make extra-long Apple Watch bands? I'm trying to get into shape (less rounded) and would love to use the Apple Watch's activity features, but the longest band needs to be about an inch longer.

In the white and black silicone sport bands, there are "XL" bands available that have a decent range. Other than the link band with extra links (which is expensive) that's the biggest Apple sells. Currently shows as unavailable on the Apple website though.

The difference being with the stainless steel, you can actually *remove* scratches and blemishes with a polishing cloth off the regular stainless steel Apple Watch, whereas if you scratch or scuff the aluminum model, it’s permanent.

As far as scratches go I totally agree. You can buff out the SS and the sapphire, which really is nice. I think the SS models will last a lot longer. The question is does it matter with these watches when they are obsolete as fast as they are?

I keep asking myself if this also counts for the black one or if scratches or polished areas shine through in some kind of silver color.

Totally get that. In my experience, I get realistically much more than 18 hours. Probably closer to 26-30 hours. I really only find I have to charge once every other day. One DOES have to build it into your routine though. I either pop it on the charger before showering, or pop it on the charger when watching a bit of nightly tv. That's about it.

I don't get EVERY alert on my watch, I get a LOT of trading alerts, fair amount of imessages, fair amount of VIP email alerts, and use it daily (okay, 4-5 days a week) for 1-1.5 hours of tracked exercise (where I have my phone with me though, this CAN make a big difference for outdoor tracked exercise).

And I have it tracking sleep nightly, although most apps these days aren't running PARALLEL processes and are simply after the fact querying the onboard watch diagnostics and then running their algos.

For thousands of people the ECG/heart functions on this are priceless. Getting this amount of medical functionality in a sub-$1000 device is pretty revolutionary. I suspect these will be prescribed to people with heart problems to help them monitor themselves.

And save people who didnt even know they had a problem!

I have a stainless steel series 0 and will go for an aluminum Series 4 even though it will not look as posh. Cost for stainless steel is almost double the comparable aluminum model so you can basically replace your watch twice as often which somewhat negates the improved duranility of the sapphire glass on the stainless steel model. Also note that aluminum model is lighter and ion-x glass allows more light to pass than sapphire, thus a seemingly brighter display.

Actually, I can confirm that's unfortunately the case with the aluminum models and the reason why I'm going for the SS this time. My series 0 watch is scratched everywhere including the screen and I'm actually quite careful with my devices.

Weird. I’ve worn mine every day for the last 2 years and would have to look carefully to see any scratches on the screen and the case.

I tried that path last year for the same reasons. I purchased the watch on a Friday. Treating the aluminum watch no different than my previous SS I had quite a few scratches on the screen by Monday. One happened rubbing it against a regular wall made form drywall. I did like how light it was though.

A glass watch face isn't a viable option for me.

I want to buy my first Apple Watch but I find ordering so confusing. Why can’t I order a Watch with a leather band NOT the Hermès.
It looks like they've discontinued all of their leather buckle bands that are NOT Hermes. Bummer because I always had my eye on the black Classic Buckle, which I was planning on pairing with a Series 4 Stainless Steel but.... nope. If you want a leather/buckle band from Apple, you're gonna have to buy a $500 Hermes band. Amazon here I come...

What he expressed was a very valid gripe of an “existing” Apple customer. Your comment on other hand is the same old fanboy defending their cult leader’s (loyal) customer unfriendly pricing practices. People who express his views are usually able to afford but see through the value lost in having to purchase the same band again and are right to point that out.
Thanks captain obvious! Print your comment and read it every time you’re itching to post the same crap o_O

Did you just now compare an Apple Watch-electronic device that will be out of use in 3-4 years with a Vacheron Constantin,Audemars Piguet,Patek Philippe etc. to name a few? o_O
that will be in use even after a hundred years?Really?

Wish I could like these comments x100.

I'd also add, the Vacheron etc.. will likely still be worth the same equivalent $ in 50+years. Suddenly the iWatch is not such an obvious bargain.

Not a selling point for me. Cardiologist told me after extensive tests: "This heart will never kill you, you'll have to die from something else". Pains were from stress of my job. Retired now. So, Jaro65, as I said, probably not for me

Cardiologist doesn't decide if your heart will malfunction. The cardiologist can analyze you for a snippet in time and give you a status based on it. There are cardiac issues that are seen only while the event happens (At times you won’t even feel it), so a 20hr/day monitor can be useful even for you. Granted, the cardiologist gave you great news and I am very happy for you.

For me it’s sadly totally different as I had open heart surgery at 17, therefore I am at higher risk. The new function can be literally vital for me.

As soon as you use the word fanboy, you discredit yourself as someone not interested in serious conversation. The gentleman was correct. You're wrong. Have a nice day.

LOL! Whereas of course the guy bringing in the constitution about a watch band is interested in a deep and rational debate?

The gentleman was correct. You're wrong.

Hmmm, you can almost taste the hypocrisy.

Mine is a series 0 from May 2015 so it’s been more than 3 years. I’m wearing it in the gym as well so that might be why. Anyway, like some people have already said the SS actually scratches easier but it’s more difficult to see those scratches.

Remember when they were implying that they were not going to update the Watch very often and that these were heirlooms? Heirloom. Lol. I love my Watch, but it is pretty funny how they sold the first series as timeless jewelry. We all knew they are gadgets that are intended to be replaced every couple years.

I still have a Series 0 gold aluminum and I've really always wanted SS to be my next one but man, that price.. especially when I know in 2 years it'll be slow on the new OS and worth $25 in trade-in.

44mm SS with apple care + tax is almost $900.
Seriously. I love Apple, but leave it to them to push the idea that steel is a precious metal. Lol.

I think that newer models will last a little bit longer (kinda like iPhones) and there will be less need to replace them often. However, if you consider that is an object that you use every day, for multiple functions, that also monitors your health basics in realtime, that monitors your training with pretty good precision, and that assists you somewhat (GPS etc.), it’s not a big deal. $399/730days is about half a dollar a day. If you’re into fitness, health, etc. it ain’t that horrible.

Point taken, but was replying to dude who remarked my Citizens watch did no check my heart rate. Not inferring that this watch was not useful to many people with heart conditions. Just not me.
