well, by the time it comes out next year it will probably be 32-bit, audio will work, and offline messages probably wont work either...

it might be time for us all to switch to Skype?

Me and my mates all switched to Skype, I advocate everyone I meet should use skype, it's so simple but feature filled.

yes i try to, but because ALL my friends use msn and NONE use skype then i am stuck (for the moment).

i love skype, there is only one grip that i have - you cannot set the bandwidth for your webcam in kbps. it will just max out my connection (around 80kbps for me). after an hour or two that takes up a large chunk of my monthly bandwidth and i hate it!

Also, Skype doesn't let you configure your webcam settings. I like to adjust the colour, exposure and contrast. The auto settings seem to make me appear extremely pale because of lighting in the room. I adjust the exposure in Windows Live Messenger, though half the time the auto exposure is good enough..

didnt know that, not that it bothers me that much. im more worried about the speeds at which everything is going, might have to stick to audio calls until they fix it (if they ever do).

I have high hopes for Google Wave. :)

I've almost stopped using MSN all together and just use Facebook chat through Adium.

I use this program to adjust heaps of settings http://www.ecamm.com/mac/iglasses/ its great!

this is the only software version for mac that I used on a daily basis when I was using Windows full time, that I wish would come out with a solid version with the features I'm used to from my Windows days.

I've always been using aMSN. I've probably been using it for the last 6 or so years. Main reasons for using aMSN over everything else;

video chat, offline messages, tabbed chats and displays who has you deleted on their list, great logging, custom emoticons! etc....

I won't use Adium, simply because its a joke; slow transfer speeds (3.5kbps), does not display all avatars immediately or at all, msn names are not always shown properly to people on your friends list, no web cam or audio support, no offline messages (i dont think at least), custom emoticon support is *really* poor. It's far worse than regular msn for mac. The only thing saving adium from being a complete msn failure is its very nice UI. However, its not enough when the application isnt functional.

Each release of msn for mac only adds a few, at the very most, new features and it takes a year at least before a newer version is out. It's a joke as well. The only guys doing anything right with MSN for mac are the guys behind aMSN. The problem is with them, is that its a bit of a slow application with some minor bugs, the good thing is that they dont crash or interfere with chats, just some UI bugs. I've got a rather nice skin theme for aMSN, so it doesnt look horribly bad;

Now, there is also TRILLIAN ASTRA thats supposed to be coming out for mac sometime in the 'near' future. I say near loosely because it took them way too long to release for windows, and since december's blog posting in 2007 about the mac version theres only been ONE announcement made since then, this year in june and had more to do with the iphone compatible release. Now, the Windows version of Astra looks pretty promising, hopefully they'll do a similar job on the mac side.

Read about Astra here:

i must say i completely disagree with you, based on my experience with it from the last 4-5 years.

slow transfer speeds (3.5kbps),
that partly isnt adiums fault, thats more because microsoft are tight asses (for MSN anyway).

does not display all avatars immediately or at all, msn names are not always shown properly to people on your friends list,
i cant think of ONE instance where that has ever happened to me

no web cam or audio support,
there is half webcam support lol (add-in), but its still very bad. so i agree with you on that one :p

no offline messages (i dont think at least),
i can tell you havent used adium for a while ;) offline messages has been support for a good 2 years.

custom emoticon support is *really* poor.
hmm ive never really tried the custom emoticons, i have downloaded sets of them from the adium website and they work perfectly. i can receive all emoticons that people send.

worse then regular msn? haha how hilarious. regular msn is as bad as office 98 for mac (thats bad).

if you havent tried adium in a few years, i think you should. there have been MANY upgrades that make most of your points invalid.

Amazed that they've taken so long on this and to produce a mess by all accounts.

Stopped using MSN when I switched back to the Mac a few years back. Skype or occasionally iChat for me.

I'm pretty much sick of this ****.

I try to use the native clients for the IM service that I need to use and MSN Messenger's Mac client is well... CRAP! There's no other word for it that I can use that'll please the censor gods.

I'm tired of the golden carrot being dragged in front of our faces by the people at Microsoft but I have no choice (until now) but to put up with this crap because there's a lot of people on my MSN Messenger list that can't run Yahoo or AIM or what not because of policies at work.

So I've made a choice. For the people who are on MSN messenger, they have my e-mail address, and my mobile number. They can e-mail or text me and I will respond but I will not be talking to them on MSN messenger anymore. I've had it with sub-par crap from Microsoft.

Yes, I know it's free and I shouldn't expect much, but the PC version of the client is well, pretty damn nice compared to the crap Mac version that they gave us... and it's free!

So why can I expect the same "quality and polish" from the Mac version?

No more excuses. No more BS. Either the port looks good and works as well as the "original" or expect more people to jump ship. This "threat" (soon to become promise) applies to any other product that Microsoft has plans on bringing over to the Mac -- including Office.

so from then theres any updates 4 the beta?..
or microsoft until just do what she always do & its to do nothing

We're almost one month away for the "early 2009" post anniversary! yay:D

This is Microsoft we're talking about... they typo'd the announcement and meant to say 12009. We have wait another 10,000 years :(

I tweeted 2 of employee's in the MBU and they both said beta still on track for the very end of 2009.

FAIL

it sucks. it uses a hell of a lot of resources for a messaging client. i know it's only in beta stages, but ive been through all this before. ill happily wait until adium has video support, for i dont even use it much.

Thank god I am not the only one who feels this way. What a disappointment Mac MSN is....it has shut down itself a few times by itself. I cannot for the life of me, set my profile picture cause every damn file type is wrong apparently. Just a mess all round really.

I will be checking that aMsn out.

@ungraphic, there's two new skins for aMSN 0.98.1 here http://sourceforge.net/projects/amsn/files/ - just in case you didn't know.

Look at the bottom of the page for 'amsn-skins'.

One is called Oxygen and the other Minimal.

Here's a screenshot of Oxygen
