Thank god I am not the only one who feels this way. What a disappointment Mac MSN is....it has shut down itself a few times by itself. I cannot for the life of me, set my profile picture cause every damn file type is wrong apparently. Just a mess all round really.

I will be checking that aMsn out.

I had the same problems on a PC with MSN. I found it really unreliable overall. So far on a new MBP with SL it is working much better but not perfectly.

I installed aMSN as well...

The only problems I have with it are:

1. Why the HELL does the cursor change when you click on someone in your contact list.
2. Why are the sounds messed up?

for anyone who does not get it to work under snow leopard try using svn version of it

No matter what I do with the ports I still cant get video to work... nothing can be accepted.. only if I do a video call, I can see and hear the person and they cant see or here me...

2010

So here we are in 2010 gone through the whole of 2009 with no public beta or new information from Microsoft on the release of a beta last year. We were meant to have something in 2009, where is it?!

Check that thread. Mac Business Unit have finally claimed it'll come out around March. I personally doubt it though. I wouldn't be surprised if Mac Messenger has been abandoned altogether.

As new Mac owner, I install MSN messenger and it tells me it can't connect or i have no internet. Help???

And yes i have internet!

We haven't abandoned Messenger:Mac. The team is still plugging away at it. Getting everything working properly with the new code on the Windows Live Messenger servers has taken longer than we anticipated, and we're working on our code (as well as passing feedback along to the WLM folks) to get it out as soon as possible.

FWIW, I'm dogfooding Messenger:Mac 8 right now, and I can verify that it's coming along. ("Dogfooding" means that I'm using a pre-alpha version of it.)

Regards,
Nadyne.

@nadyne, Wow. pre-alpha. Are you sure we'll see a beta of this in March? Have you streamlined the app? With this I mean upping the interface; getting rid of the borders on the contactlist for example? And maybe new Leopardesque graphics for the Emoticon and Font buttons?

Let me explain our process and terminology a bit, which I think will help a little bit. :)

Every day, we compiles our code and create a "build". When we're far enough into the development cycle that these builds are usable in your daily life, we put out a call and ask everyone on the team to "dogfood" -- that is, actually use the app as you normally would. This is pre-alpha code because it's internal to our team and we haven't done anything to the daily build to ensure that it will actually work. I just go to the server, grab the latest build, and run with it. Some days this works better than others, since the daily build is simply a snapshot in time and there could be stuff that doesn't work.

Alphas and betas go through a big testing process to ensure that they're more ready for prime time. We choose a single build, decide what we need to deliver in the beta and what can wait for a future beta drop, and test it to make sure that it can be shared. Sometimes we'll have to pull a feature from the beta because it's not stable enough to be shared yet, so it'll be included in a future beta update.

Given that I'm pulling down a daily build before it's gone through test, it's looking pretty good. I did a video chat with my dad (who's using Windows Live Messenger on Win7) a couple of nights ago, in fact.

That said, I can't tell you what's going to be in Messenger other than what we've announced, and I can't yet comment on what it will look like. When I can, I will. :)

Regards,
Nadyne.

So, as guestimate, when would you say public release would be? It seems that if you have video chat working relatively well, then progress should pick up rapidly right?

I don't think anyone is wanting 'winks' or anything too gimmicky. If audio and video is working great, then that's good enough - things like games and other stuff could come in 8.1.

Just my two pence.

At work we use Microsoft Office Communicator on Windows for internal company IM.... Can anyone tell me if MS Messenger 8 is able to work with such a server, or whether there is any other way to replicate the functionality of Microsoft Office Communicator, on Mac?

We haven't announced a release date yet, so I can't provide a guestimate of any sort. :)

Nadyne.

"It will be released when it's done."

..... aaaannnnnnddddd still waiting......

Microsoft sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been following this "beta" "monday release" "soon" "this year" "end of 2009" "real soon" update.

That is the only reason i run parallels on my mac. I think msn messenger and windows is awast of time/money. MSN hotmail is old technology and there is nothing special about them. JUST so happens everyone in south america uses msn messenger with hotmail and video.

I wish i could tell microsoft themself how much they suck. I have spend weeks/months calling microsoft to get a defenite answer as to when or ballpark when it will be released. They don't know who to transfer me to talk to. And their contact us tab is if you have a account to ask questions.

After finally talking to someone the simple question was asked:
"is there ANYONE IN THE MICROSOFT COMANY that i can call to speak regarding an idea or update or status of microsoft msn messenger mac software.

Their answer.
.........(pause)........... No......... sir............. i'm sorry no sir........

So there is NOBODY AT ALL IN THE MICROSOFT COMPANY THAT CAN ANSWER THAT FOR ME... NOBODY EVEN IN A MESSENGER DEPARTMENT OR ANYONE AT ALL?????????

...............uhhh no sir......... we don't have a department for msn messenger unless it's a paid service.................. (Hanged up)

All of which, is good reason to wait for the finished product. ;)

I agree. Hoping that the "finished product" will come out soon and do you have any idea when that might be?! :)

P.S
I like your bible verse that you have at the end of your thread. :apple:

Messenger:Mac 7 will work with Office Communicator Server (OCS). You can download the latest, 7.0.2, from our website.

The beta of Messenger:Mac 8 is coming in March. More details are in a blog post from my boss: 2009 in review. Watch Mac Mojo, our team blog, for updates about its release.

Calling tech support to ask about it won't get you any answers about release dates. It's their job to help you when you're stuck, so they're not the right people to ask release dates. They don't know about that kind of thing. I know you're frustrated about its delay (and so are we!), but please don't take it out on our tech support folks. :)
