I’m still kinda sceptical about FaceID, but that’s largely due to how much I love TouchID. It’s a high bar Apple has set for itself.

It just occurred to me though that *maybe* we’ve been looking at this backwards. Could be that keeping TouchID was the backup plan for Apple, in case FaceID couldn’t be made to work well enough. And dropping TouchID has more to do with FaceID being a success than with problems adding TouchID to the iPhone 8. Maybe. I just hope it really is good enough, so we’ll see…

I also suspect that FaceID won’t be a background thing, and will need a (virtual) home button press for it to trigger. If so (and if it works properly) that would make it feel indistinguishable from TouchID. Or even better than TouchID, if you have wet hands etc.

I hope it has both.

It will replace Touch ID I think, it's not necessarily a bad thing either, it seems Apple have put a lot of thought into this and it will a more advanced system. Expect Apple to do with facial scanning what they did with Touch ID.

It will be interesting to see how this facial scanning technology adapts to sunglasses. I'm sure Apple's thought of that scenario and has a solution for it.

NAh. I still don't like it. Don't wanna have to scan my face at any angle everytime i wanna unlock my phone or use apple pay. How annoying. Touch id is so much simpler. Why you making it difficult Apple? Just cause you can? If touch ID isnt included on the iphone 8, i have no problem going with the iphone 7s plus instead.

Oh dear.

There will of course be a large distinct confirmation warning directly on the display which a user must tap before purchasing even if Face ID is the authentication methodology.
It will say buy. Since the phone knows it's an authorized user the purchase will be processed in one click as opposed to before where the user has to hold their finger on the touch ID

I just can't see this working well enough not to be a pain in the butt. What about a person who sometimes wears eye glasses, sometimes wears contacts or sometimes wears sunglasses? What if that person also sometimes wears baseball caps or fedoras?

I think the best thing is to allow Apple to demonstrate its capabilities first. Followed by user and critic reviews will analyze every possible scenario possible with facial recognition. Interesting times.

You know, I'm starting to wonder if we've been going about this the wrong way. We've all been thinking of this as "facial recognition" but what if it uses your face's thermal signature which is considerably more unique than just facial features? And your thermal signature would be identifiable through masks, glasses, and clothes. Just a thought but the IR sensors seem to support that.

Facescan to log on....gonna be tough for teenagers with a ever changing pattern of zits. It is scary as it gets ever more personal just to log on. What next?; face, finger, voice, and retina ALL required? When is too much just too much?....happy just typing in a code.

Gotta love the idea so much. Glasses, no glasses, sunglasses, getting a piercing, colored contact lenses, wearing a hat, changing your hair enough(?), go crazy with makeup and whatever else. If the device can still recognise you from an awkward angle I'm pretty sure it'd open right away even for my cat.

Not to mention the new courageous way to make app purchases. "Look away quickly unless you want to purchase two thousand diamonds! *Beep* Too slow! Thank you for your purchase!".

I'm sure Apple has the courage to introduce something as harebrained as face recognition while dropping touch id but it still doesn't make it a good idea.

That's for sure, recently leaked images of iPhone 8 Display assembly shows no touch id.

No doubt Face-Id will be primary source of security in iPhone 8. I Am actually interested to see how Apple will make it work with Apple Pay,

I don't see that image as showing "no touch id" at all. It looks like an image of the back of the screen. There's a huge chunk missing at the bottom, which is exactly where you would need a space in the metal sheeting to mount a touch ID sensor behind the screen. Why is this image being touted as showing no Touch ID?

Seems a bit of a leap here. "Resting" could mean a lot of things in that context, only one of which is "lying flat". It's also assuming that all these strings are tied to features. Some could be detritus of abandoned concepts.

What really gets me is statements like this:
That story claimed the iPhone 8's facial recognition would capture more data points than Touch ID, making it more secure.
More data points doesn't make something more secure unless those data points are less noisy, more strongly correlated to identity, more discriminative against false positives, and more likely to be used regularly and not circumvented.

It's not like Apple to roll out something half baked, so I'll wait to pass judgement, but I can think of too many ways that something like this could be foiled. Hats, glasses, facial hair, facial distortion from emotion or exercise... Any data on how well facial recognition does in discriminating among twins compared to fingerprints?

I think sunglasses are the bigger dilemma for me anyway. There must be a way though, I would think.
Or eye glasses vs contacts on the same person? Eye glasses have the added problem that they're designed to bend light passing through them...

Really hope this isn't replacing Touch ID and is being introduced alongside as an alternative

+1. cause what about in the dark? like, when you pick up your phone from bedside table in middle of night? are they saying that it will shine IR light and unlock with that? hm. i suppose that could actually work. i'm skeptical at moment, but..

Tell me how different is when someone scans your face while you’re sleeping or use your finger at the same conditions? I’ve seen a lot cases when people put the finger of someone sleeping to unlock their iPhone. Anyway, you can restar your phone before going to sleep, this disables Touch ID (and probably Face ID) until you type the passcode again.

The difference for some of us is that I feel when something or someone touches any part of me. If you no longer need to have any physical contact with the device then that's not good. Often any little sound could wake me but some times I sleep hard and hear nothing. But I will always feel if something comes into contact with me.

Use the password in that situation since we do even today in some situations

That's something I'm concerned about. You know how the photos app has a folder with different people from facial recognition? Well most of my 10k pics on my 7 plus thinks I'm 11 different people.
