Let me get this straight... Apple already has all our fingerprints potentially tied to our Apple IDs. Now they are going to have our faces as well?

I mean, I know the fingerprints are encrypted and kept on the device itself but there's always the possibility....

That's the question? Touch id is not in the display, nor is it on the back. So were is it? Million dollar question?
The power button is much larger so it could be there.
If they got rid of Touch ID it would NEVER come back. It's the most absurd suggestion.
Apple has brought features back that customers complained about loosing before.

Let me just say this again.

All one needs to do to unlock your phone is grab your phone point it quickly towards your face and unlock it. My nephew did that to me today and ran off with my phone.

So when your asleep anyone can get in your phone by hovering it less than a second near your face without you ever feeling a thing.

NO TOUCHID = NO SALE
What if it requires a gesture like blinking your eyes?

It could also use risk analysis to evaluate other factors than your face (geolocation, typical usage patterns, whether the device has been set down, etc.). Come up with a score and decide whether to authenticate.

No there isn't a possibility.

All I know is... that the iPhone 8 will fundamentally change how I use this phone. People were mad at no more slide to unlock. Now. No more Touch ID and no no more home button.

I know zip about the technology of face recognition. Seems, though, that if the phone can read a face in the dark, the leap to reading a finger pressed to the screen wouldn't be an unsurmountable programming leap.

So when our girlfriends/boyfriends are trying to snoop on our phones... instead of covering my fingerprints I gotta cover my face? I might have to go full burka around the house.

Obviously, people here are excited on iPhone 8.

Why you guys just wait? Oh, you can't wait.

The issue for me is one of the ability to refuse to unlock a phone.

I can, to some extent, refuse to put my finger on something. I mean, I can be held down and forced, but it would require a certain amount of violence to get done. I can also lie about which finger it is until the number of attempts has been used up.

It a lot easier to hold up a phone to my face, against my will, and unlock it. There isn't much I can do to refuse that.

You realize there is a home button in the sense of its functionality right? You can't remove home Button functionality. It's how you use the device.

I will absolutely NOT buy the iPhone 8 if it does not have a touch id, I hate touch id at the back and i hate touch id on the power button but I'm willing to buy it if they include touch id, i don't care where they put it, if it has a touch id i will buy it if not then I'm willing to wait till next year my 6s is working perfectly.

I don't really mind about 'Face ID' being an option, so long as some kind of user action is required to scan for the face.

What I really don't want is every new smartphone scanning every person's face that gets near enough to it all the time, just in case it is the owner wanting the phone unlocked. That would be beyond creepy and open to abuse by trackers, advertisers, governments and allsorts... more than already.

This is what I also hate about social media and geotagging... it removes choice and consent from the individual and often makes the choice for others who may not even be aware of the choice they have been deprived of. It is wrong, IMHO. So I hope Apple have considered that, though I fear even if they have, others will not, or will not care.

Apple seems to have put a lot of work into making Face ID versatile and able to work in as many situations as possible. This only worries me that there won't be any Touch ID on the iPhone 8...
