“The team has worked to give Siri a deeper knowledge of music so that you can ask to play virtually anything from your personal favorites to the latest chart-topping releases, simply by saying 'Hey Siri.'”

Does this mean the Siri built into the HomePod is more advanced than the Siri on iPhone X? Because currently I would ask Siri to play some songs I have in my library and it would go to the store to play a song with the same name. I’m like wtf, why would you go to the store and find a song if I have what I’m asking for in my library.

It’s in my library and not necessarily my favorites. Does this make the difference? Do I need to favorite all my songs in my library???

One thought, omit multi room so more people are able to get it in their homes.
Say 10000 avaialble. If multi-room is available perhaps 6500 homes would have home pods.
If multi-room isn’t available, perhaps someo for multi-purchase people would opt just to buy 1 and add on later.

I’m kind of skeptical of that... if you have multi-room support, you would have potential buyers attempting to buy two instead of one.

And the Apple crowd would buy 2 of these in a heart beat. You don’t want to give customers a reason to wait... you want to have those features ready to use.

It's not mono.

Stereo sound can't come from a single point. And the article says:

Apple said a future software update coming later this year will enable users to play music throughout the house with multi-room audio with multiple HomePods. If there's more than one HomePod set up in the same room, the speakers will be able to deliver stereo sound.

In the 80's most people thought personal computers weren't needed.
In the 90's most people thought the internet wasn't needed.
In 2007 most people thought smartphones weren't really needed.
In 2010 most people thought the iPad wasn't really needed.
In 2015 most people thought smartwatches weren't really needed.

Home automation + smart assistants is gonna be huge. The industry is still in it's infancy, even today.

So true to the first three BUT the last two have had ZERO impact on me and never will!

They do know the Echo is $99, right?
In terms of sound quality, I would assume the Homepod would easily be 3x better than the Echo. This is a SQ speaker (hardware+software), with Siri. Echo and Google are assistants with a simple speaker. Different markets.

To buy or not to buy... That is the question?

You could purchase HomePod and if it doesn't meet your expectations, return it within 14 days. That's my plan (and I may purchase a second one if I end up liking the first).

That's what I did when the Watch came out two years ago; assuming I'd likely return it because the value proposition wasn't clear, and I hadn't worn a watch in 10 years. After 3-4 days there was no way my Watch was not going back. It's been on my wrist at least 12 hours/day ever since.

Ditto on how I purchased the iPhone X, not being sure how I'd like FaceID. It was a keeper as well.

I'm sure the sound will be great, but I'm reluctant to buy a device that I presume will lock me into iTunes. I guess we won't know for sure until it's released, but I'd be more comfortable if this think also plays Amazon Music or Spotify etc.

At least most of Amazon's devices are very cheap, so if you want to switch it's not so pricey to do so. Also, Siri really, really needs to be improved. It's about the worst personal assistant -- except for perhaps Samsung's Bixby. Apple just keeps dropping the ball in so many areas despite vast resources.

You can actually snag one for 79 if you time it right, Amazon seems to discount it often and that's the issue I have. I'm happy with my Echo, what does the the HomePod give me that the Echo doesn't? Especially given the exorbitant pricing

Sound quality. This is a high end audio device, not an Amazon buy me button and speaker.

Apple should bring Siri to all of the countries that speak a certain language.
Here in Austria we still don't have Siri on AppleTV, so how are the odds that the HomePod will come here ?

Amazon Echo works fine for me. I don't understand this limitation.

If you have Spotify on your phone, I'd assume you can airplay it to the homepod.

For those who are comparing it to the Amazon thing - try listening to the two side by side. It's like comparing a AM radio with a decent speaker!
It's a bit like saying "Why is that Ferrari so expensive when I can buy a mainstream Ford Focus cheaper". The Amazon is cheap, nasty with poor quality components. It'll end up in landfills very soon!
Enough said guys!

Good thinking. Probably do that.

Isn't that the case with any Apple product though haha. You think "why would I need something like that or I've gone this long without it why do I need one or a new one" then a week later you wonder how you ever lived without it.

I think the biggest problem they have is that there's no compelling reason to replace an existing Sonos setup with this. It doesn't even have any component to handle your TV output, unless the only thing you ever use is an Apple TV, and even at that you may have to manually select the speaker from some AirPlay menu each time you want to watch TV. This seems like a pretty odd choice from Apple - there is no need to enter this space. It has so much competition that already serves this "need" really well. Given that Sonos is already supporting Alexa, plus Google in the Spring, and also AirPlay, not to mention they integrate with a full system that includes a soundbar, I predict this will go the way of the Apple HiFi.

You're probably correct, but that's a lesser solution to having it run native on the HomePod. When my friends come over and music is playing on Alexa, they like to keep telling her to play their favorites and since I'm carrying my phone around they can't do that as easily if I'm airplaying from my phone.

If my wife is down in the kitchen - will she be able to tell me and my son dinner is ready if all rooms have a homepd? Like the Amazon Echo?
