So mines coming tomorrow and I'm totally set up for disapointment.

Could someone please tell what is apples policy on refunds? If I have those lines will I have trouble getting my money back?

How many post does it take...

until this thread becomes macrumors front page headline news?

Then it'd reach a larger audience and apple might take notice!

Apple's policy is different from country to country, as they are bound by the consumer protection laws of any country in which they do business. In Denmark for example, and in most other EU countries, Internet purchases can be returned without question or penalty for up to 14 days from the day of delivery.

I am on day 7 today, so I will probably be calling Apple unless it turns out to be soft/firm ware based (not likely) and can be fixed. Pity - an otherwise perfect machine...BTO! (sigh)

If you are in the U.S. you might have to pay a hefty restocking fee. But under the circumstances (defective) they will probably let it slide. Please post some news about your screen once you get it.

Whew! I'm glad to hear that.

I'll post pics, dont worry.

Anyone who has returned/returning their 15" thinking of going
17"?

Guess the 17" has it's own set of issues, namely poor viewing angles, dark corners,
and backlighting coming through the bottom 1/2" of the screen.
Nothing compared to the 15" scan lines though.

I'm conflicted. My brain tells me to wait until mwsf06, my penis
tells me to buy a 17" now. It's like the classic brain vs penis chess battle in Seinfeld.

Wish I knew forsure that this was going to to be the last ppc powerbook update,
but part of me thinks they might sneak in a 7448 last minute... So close to mwsf06,
I can wait dammit! Maybe by then the 15" display will be fixed.

mine ships in a day or two...i'm on the edge of my seat. i'm going to a local apple store here in southern california that just opened last week. i'm going to take a look at their 15" powerbooks on display and i'll report back...wish me luck

God speed.

haha. your post made me laugh.

i was considering going up to the 17.. because those displays have no lines, for sure. i saw with mine eyes ;) but i think it's just too big for me... and i don't have a penis to argue with me :p

i'm in the mindset right now that i'll get mine, i will notice the lines, but they wont be so horribly bad that i'll regret the purchase. if i do, i'll return it and get a new one...if that one sucks equally bad, i'll just try to get a refund. that's my mindset/game plan...not a good way to start off my switch from PC to Apple.

someone in the applenova forums said apple is replacing there's and ASSURED them the new one would not have the problem...

http://forums.applenova.com/showthread.php?t=11218&page=2&pp=30

"Called Apple Support, they are going to replace the thing. Good service. I was assured that the replacement will not have this issue. We'll see... ;-)"

Josh
i have a feeling that replacement will have the same issue

I've been thinking, there's an easy way for Apple to fix this problem, using a firmware update. It will cause the screen to be dimmer, but probably won't be as bad as the old one. All they need to do is make every other line (the bright ones) darker before being sent to the screen. Then it will be uniform.

It won't...because this isn't a rumor...it's a fact! haha :D Wait...this isn't funny.

aaah. but then pure colours (RGBs of 255) would still display the lines - on white for example.

Better to make the alternate darker lines one shade lighter I think. This will mean that black are not black, but still...

anyway - I still think there is too much interference coming in from somewhere too that is not really acceptable - running iTunes here, and in my custom calibrated coloursync profile - which gives me the best contrast/colours - I get wavy lines in for example, the left-hand pane of iTunes.

Well, mine went back for engineering review today. I'll be getting a replacement from all indications. I'm debating not even opening the second box if it has a W8 serial number.

If I hear anything from the engineer or the product specialists, I'll pass it on...

Before you guys return the PB's that you didn't receive yet try a clean re-install of the OS. I believe it mitigates the issue.

How many times is someone going to suggest this? It doesn't fix the screen problem.

Here is what's really funny. Before this rev came out everybody was talking about how they are going to wait for a faster powerbook or an Macintel powerbook but then apple comes out with the SAME powerbook only with a crappy screen and now everybody is buying.

WHO CARES about 100pixel increase in screen!

If you need a powerbook and are so worried either get a refurb rev d from apple or go to ebay and buy any one of the hundreds of unopened brand new rev ds for a major discount.

Its the same exact computer folks only with slower ram and a defective display.

The rev ds are actually a better computer. DO you really want to keep exchanging your powerbook in the hopes there will be a screen fix? It won't happen for a while.

Send your computer back so an engineer can look at it? WHAT A JOKE. If they want an engineer to look at it he can look at any one of the new 15" powerbooks off the assembly line or go into an apple store and see the problem there.

News FLASH! Apple knows damn good and well these things are defective. You really believe that they DON"T know? They are all defective, every one of them.

Stop buying the powerbook. Wait for the boards to be fluttered with posts about how the problem is fixed. Get the 17" or get a rev D model.

Sorry but I just can't believe people are waiting in line with $2k in hand to get punished.

upon returning from the apple store...

well here's my story, take it for what you will.

after reading everyone's story, i was ready to walk into my local apple store and stare into these god awful lines on the new 15"...the 15" i just ordered over the weekend. i fought through the crowd and saw 3 different 15" powerbooks. i thought this was too good to be true, i'll look at all 3...and i did.

i must have looked like a real goon staring at the display all squinty eyes from 3 inches away...but after looking at all 3 displays for god only knows how long..the only place i could see the lines was on the blue desktop/background (new to mac, dont know what you guys call that :D ) i was relieved beyond words. i did see the lines though...but i opened pictures, i opened CS2, i opened espn.com...on all of these. this is something i would be incredibly anal about and i absolutely would notice this type of problem immediately.

i had a friend with me as well, who stared with me...same deal. only on the background did we see these lines. stood it up side by side on the 17" too...did the same thing on that one.

in conclusion, i walked out of the apple store with very little to almost no concern that my powerbook will be fine. maybe i'm not as affected by the lines, but we had 2 sets of eyes, both of which came to the same conclusion. looked good to us.

i hope this puts the people in my same position at ease...at least somewhat. best of luck to those waiting for theirs in the mail, just like me.

Yep, that's what the lines are all about. And that's why I'm keeping mine.
I read all over the place how awful this screen is... but than looking at it I can't help but think... what are they talking about?... I love this computer and also the screen, and YES, if you put your face 3 inches from the screen you see some faint lines... but, I normally have the screen at about 20" from my face, and I don't look at displays with magnifying glass.
The higher resolution of this display makes a huge difference. It's a better machine;)
