I find this latest "twist" as insulting to viewers intelligence as any movie made by M. Night Shyamalan. Not only does it go against House's character, but to retcon the events of an episode as a hallucination? What is this, Dallas?

How is it insulting? We've seen for seasons thats House is getting worse and worse and its been leading up to a psychotic break for at least two seasons now.

I haven't seen the end of season 6 yet, as I said I am working through the end of season 3 right now and starting from the beginning, but I of course noticed the posts on him going to a mental hospital.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the promotions they have done with NAMI. I even saw some youtube clip with hugh laurie and the cuddy actress talking up the importance of mental health awareness. Just a thought......haven't seen it yet for myself. But I do know that the shirts Fox sells with "Houseisms" go to NAMI, which isn't particularly my favorite organization (half their money comes from the pharmaceutical industry). Also, after Kal Penn's character committed suicide they had some sort of PSA tie-in at the end of the show. Anyhow, just some food for thought.

How is it insulting?

I consider twists that retcon events unnecessarily to be little more that the writers patting themselves on the back for being clever. Intentionally "tricking" the viewers in this fashion is simply lazy writing to get a rise out of viewers.

i think you are taking it a little to serious. i think that you can be upset but i dont think that it was the writer's intension to insult you. they made a bad choice in you opinion and you didnt like it. im kind of upset that it wasent real but only because i want House and Cuddy to hook up. This is House. Not Lost. So it doesnt live and die by the gotcha moments and mysteries like Lost does.

but hey what do i know. i love House pretty much no matter what they do. if they killed him off i would probably stop watching, but we know that is not going to happen. its all about entertainment. and i am entertained by most of the show. some things im like ah…no, but i just try and forget those moments because they arent entertaining.

I disagree. The "trick" was in plain sight. We knew all along that House was hallucinating. We just wanted to believe that the night with Cuddy was real. And to call it "lazy"? ... That kind of writing is mighty hard to pull off well.

Besides every episode of "House" revolves around a major character lying. Lots of times it's the patient or the patient's loved one. This time, it was House himself. I'd say the writers were indeed clever and they deserve a pat on the back. Good ep.

I liked it, although I am a little sad that House didn't get Cuddy like he wanted.

He's had a rough year. Maybe a rest is just what he needed!

It's not a retcon. House had been hallucinating for the past few episodes, so it shouldn't be a surprise that this continued. If you watch the second-to-last episode closely, you might even catch on. For example, how in the world did House "detox" that quickly? Previous detox attempts have taken days of agonizing withdrawal... this time it took a few hours.

Nor am I sure it goes against House's character. He has hallucinated before (after being shot in "No Reason", and while dreaming in "Top Secret", and of course in the last three episodes of this season).

Interesting twist...kinda felt sorry for house. Glad the chase/cam wedding is finally done and dusted...was starting to drag on. I still think they'll get a divorce soon enough.

13 also looks like the next candidate to have problems next season alongside house weakening the team but she won't die because fans love her so it'll probably be a season mostly focused on the mental institution. Speculation of course

I suspected that of 13 too, being the cancer diagnosis. Also going back to season 2. I kinda wanted to see what would have happen between him and stacy.

Look closer.

<--------

Just noticed she is born a day before me 4 years later.

i hope that she is cured somehow. i know that it would be absolutly ridiculous but i really dont want to see her go. and i really REALLY hate that her and Foreman are together. i hope that they breakup at some point.

on a side not Olivia Wilde was #1 on Maxim's Hot 100

she beat out Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) who was at #69

Why don't you like her with foreman?

I don't really mind it

2 reasons. 1. it's just to cliche, Chase and Cameron got together when they were on the House's team and now 13 and Foreman!

2. i really dont like Foreman. He's such a useless character now. we had a discussion about it a little earlier in this thread about a month ago. What was great about him was he actually stood up to House. now he just geoes along with whatever he says. he has just gotten boring. So since i dont like him and makes me mad to see him with a character i do like. and she's to hot for him too hahaha:p

OK I'm all caught up (I think for the most part, may be a couple episodes I didn't see). Anyhow, the season finale was pretty sad. I didn't even really feel the sadness mitigated by the wedding. So I guess the take away message is that House not dealing with things and pushing his feelings aside caused him to have schizophrenia. I don't know, I'm really very dense with these things where you don't know what's real and what's not. I have never experienced hallucinations, but I tend to think they wouldn't be as concrete and full of clues as House's were at the end of season 4 for example. But, I am getting all mixed up. I can't remember if House going into insulin shock was in the last episode where everything wasn't real or in the second to last episode and it was real. Anyhow, if that was real, I wonder if that along with him suffering brain trauma at the end of season 4 along with putting himself into hallucinatory states with the alzheimer's drugs and undergoing electrical brain stimulation at high voltages are reasons to explain the schizophrenia at the end of this season. As he himself said (I think during the hallucination), schizoprhenia is an unlikely diagnosis at his age. Stress induced psychosis maybe, I dunno....

I guess I could watch the episode again to figure this out but nothing was real right? Him detoxing, having sex with Cuddy, etc....but it was real when he yelled that he had sex with Cuddy? Sorry, I'll watch it again I guess....it's just that I watched so many episodes in a very short time span like I was throwing back popcorn and I usually don't have to pay attention too closely so when they blur hallucinations with reality I just get a little lost.

In the second-to-last episode, House goes into Cuddy's office and says something nasty about her kid. Cuddy leaves, and then House says "I need you". Everything after that is a hallucination - the detox, the sex, etc.

At this point, it appears that everything that happened in the very last episode did happen. The lipstick bottle was a hallucination, obviously (it was actually his Vicodin bottle), but it seems like everything else was real.

Of course, we might find that changes in the next season... at this stage, I don't think we can say one way or another with 100% certainty what was real and what was not in the season finale.

Thanks. I tried going back to start at the second to last episode but I couldn't watch anymore. I'm finally full. :) I'll probably watch it again before the next season starts. The show is getting a bit painful (again I'm colored by having watched all five seasons in the span of a few weeks). But I could go for a shower scene with Chase to lighten the mood. ;)

Edit: I don't know if I mentioned this before, but I thought the season finale of season 4 was the episode to date and was masterful. It showed everyone at the end in such a succinct way but so accurately showed all of their states of being and managed to include the old and new teams. It brought the relationship between House and Wilson to a cutting edge of either becoming more meaningful or nonexistent. And it was the only episode besides Autopsy from season 2 to bring me to tears.

i predict House and Cuddy get married by the end of the show. either that or House dies. i know, pretty different endings but they are either going to end it in a very happy way or very dark and sad way.
