They could have, instead of the original notch, and now the island, just put a "control strip" top and bottom, that's just black pixels when not needed, and an area for contextual menus or functionality when appropriate. This way, no notch, and useful screen space when there's a purpose. It would have solved so many issues – square corners, no horns, added functionality, and still way more screen real estate than previous screens with a chin and forehead. A screen with a notch is not, no matter how you name it, a full screen device.

Apple could have done something very similar with the notch. The pill gives a bit more space on the sides compared to the original notch (not sure about the 13 Pro / 14 notch) and the little gap on tap gives it more magic when it's dimmed out and becomes part of the "island", but in essence it's just a status bar of sorts that can be done with software on any of their phones, with more or less efficiency. It doesn't fundamentally change the phone in any aspect, but I guess it does make it more playful. As said, some time the island itself can be gone, and nothing to top Apple implementing the same thing they have, with even less limitations and more real estate. Kudus for a massively good critical reception though.

I personally think the dynamic island is simply brilliant. I do also think that the bright True Tone flashlight is the most underrated yet it is the most innovative piece of this new product. I really look forward to seeing this feature gets tuned and refined over the next couple of years.

I wonder, is this new silent mode indicator 🔕 permanent or temporary? 🤔 Does anybody know? Will I be able to stop being afraid of missing calls if I buy the new iPhone pro?

Nobody knows but I’m guessing it’s just a notification like currently and closes quickly.

All I want to know is if they have added any sort of Mute/Un-mute shortcut for use during calls? That would be a perfect "dynamic island" shortcut. This is so badly missing from the iPhone, it is very cumbersome to have to go to the active call window to do this. Clearly Apple employees never mute during their conference calls :)

I thought that was one of the most clever things they've done in a while. It's very Apple - blurs the lines between software and hardware and gives them a little gimmick to help sell more iPhones to people who probably don't NEED to upgrade. It looks so natural, very well implemented.

Errrm there is a very clear silent mode indicator on the side of your phone? Just look at the button? Because Apple makes the hardware, not everything needs to be on the screen. I've never had any trouble looking at the button. It's even marked red when activated.
