I'm hoping to pick up a 2G iPhone tonight. Hopefully, it works, but I'm wondering. What's the worse that could happen (go wrong)?

No problem, glad you got it all worked out. Hope everything goes smoothly for you! It seems like it either works really well or turns into a hassle.

In terms of serious issues? Haven't heard of any. Some of us are unable to send MMS after doing this, some people are unable to activate the 2g completely and have to jump through a few extra hoops to get it done, but that's pretty much it. The way I understand it though, even if your activation on the 2G hangs and says it needs more time, you can just pop your microsim back into your iPhone 4 and you're no worse off than when you started.

Anyone in Metro Detroit have an iPhone 2G I could borrow for a few minutes?? I'll buy you lunch...

PM me!

is there any interest in an ATT unlimited service activation program? lol $10 for time + shipping of sim. I pop it into my 2G, activate on iTunes and send the sim back.

I just did it from my friends iphone 2g.. but i had to go to the att store and tell them.. because i didnt wanna restore my friends iphone.. and also when i called the lady said that i couldnt change the device intil 30days had passed...

but anyways i went to the store and they did and added the 20$ a month unlimited data with 200 messages..i cut the 2g sim card and placed it on my iphone4.. hopefully the switch it to the unlimited for 30$soon! :D

Is this the email u got when AT&T auto changed data plan.

We hope you are enjoying your iPhone! We appreciate and value your business and want to be sure you are aware of a change we've made to your service to ensure you have the best possible experience with data on your iPhone.

iPhone allows you to easily surf the web, access social networking, email and more. That's why we require an eligible Data Plan for iPhone when using iPhone. This ensures that customers with iPhones are not unpleasantly surprised with high data pay-per-use charges-just one low, predictable, flat rate for unlimited use each month.

Our records indicate your iPhone does not have the correct data plan. We have added the appropriate Data Plan for iPhone. We've also added a messaging package to match the messaging plan included in your previous data and messaging bundle.

If you would like to select another data or messaging plan or have questions, please call 1-800-331-0500 (or 611 from your wireless phone). You can also visit att.com/mywireless to manage your account. For additional information about iPhone plan requirements visit att.com/iPhoneplans.

Thank you for being an AT&T customer. We look forward to continuing to provide you with a great iPhone experience.

Sincerely,
AT&T

att online says that i have the $20 with 200text package but I got a text and email stating that my data messaging package got updated, but doesn't say to what. when i try to update to the $30 data on iPhone it gives me an error but i am able to still use 3g not sure what is happening.

confused

hello all!

I've been lurking and reading around on mac rumors since I got my first macbook white.... but finally registered today.

I'm a little confused though.... in setting this unlimited plan on my phone and really need the help from you guys.

Here is my story.....

I just got a ip4 on July 9th....

Activated on itunes and currently have the 2gb data plan....

I followed the instructions on the board from the OP....

taped my micro sim to the iphone 2g tray and inserted it.
the iphone 2g immediately recognized and says AT&T and E on it...
I then plugged it to itunes and clicked restore and set it up as a new phone because it doesnt let me back it up...

after the restore i wait around for hours and the iphone 2g works fine but my data plan remains the same.....

I tried calling AT&T and have them change my IMEI number but they said they cannot make any changes on a new account less than 30 days....

What am I doing wrong??? Please help.....>.

Thanks in advance
Eddie

Same thing happened to me they didnt allow change through phone... what i did was i went to the att store and told them that i wanted to use my iphone 2g so i can give the iphone 4 to my son..so they took the 2g added a sim card and they added th unlimited data.. (they inserted a new sim card into iphone 2g) then they sent me on my way.. when i got home i cut the iphone 2g sim to the micro sim size and put it in the iphone 4.. I got mms to work and everything.. hopefully i get that text or email conforming the change back to the 30$ unlimited.

In the att website right now it shows i have unlimited data and 187text message...hopefully they update it soon..good luck..

I tried this on my new two iphones but it wasn't able to complete the activation on the 2g. By me trying my existing micro sim cards does that mean I wont be able to do it anymore? or If I get two new sim cards it should hopefully work? Thanks.

Hopefully I can't get this to work because for me it is the deal breaker for me to keep the iphone.

is it strange that AT&T keeps sending me those text messages and emails confirming that they switched me to an appropriate data plan even tho i did the process like a week ago? they've sent me the txt and emails saying they've switched me to the appropriate plan on like three different days. just thought it was weird lol

You should get new sim cards for the iphone 2g.. i actually did it at the att store told them some bs. lie.. lol but yea..after they activate the 2g cut the sim card and place it in the iphone 4.. then like in a week or so i would get the a new micro sim for the iphone after ur sure u got the unlimited data

What happened when you tried to activate with the 2g? I had an issue as well and then couldn't activate at ALL. Had to call AT&T to activate my SIM and now don't have unlimited data. :( It kept telling me I needed a pre-approved credit code or something, which is weird since my credit is great. Anyway, I bought a used 2G and then couldn't even use the damn thing.

Ok so I did it, and now it said "Your activation requires additional time to complete. You will receive and email once your activation is complete"

Is that bad? Should I try a new SIM or just wait?

I restored the iPhone 2G before I did this too.

Edit: Nevermind, I just tried it with my original SIM (not an iPhone 4 microsim) and it activated. Do you guys get the text about the data being changed to $30 3G when you move the sim to your iPhone or within the same time you have your sim in your iPhone 2G?
