Ok so I did it, and now it said "Your activation requires additional time to complete. You will receive and email once your activation is complete"

Is that bad? Should I try a new SIM or just wait?

I restored the iPhone 2G before I did this too.

Edit: Nevermind, I just tried it with my original SIM (not an iPhone 4 microsim) and it activated. Do you guys get the text about the data being changed to $30 3G when you move the sim to your iPhone or within the same time you have your sim in your iPhone 2G?
I was able to activate the iPhone 2g with my micro sim that was already activated in my iPhone 4. But, I have yet to receive the text message saying my plan had changed to the $30 one. Currently on $20 + texts according to ATT website. Others have received the text so I'm not entirely sure.

I'm on the same boat with you. How long ago did you get the data plan? I got mine about 20 minutes ago and i'm still waiting.

Like 2 days ago, lol. When I log on I can see that unlimited was activated but it also shows that I had the $15 plan. A lot of prorated activity, lol.

Easiest way to tell is dial *3282#

If it worked right it should list 3 data plans.

Your original, the 2g, and the current unlimited.

The original and 2g should say deactivated.

All I got was a text saying that Data is 0 of Unlimited and Text is 3 of 187. Seems like I'm still on the 2g Plan.

Yeap same over here. I'm wondering if I call ATT then they'll switch it over. Prolly a bad idea but if it doesn't change over within a few days I might have to

Should I wait for AT&T to do the switch from the 2g to the 3g or should I change through my online account as it now has the option to add the $30 unlimited plan?

Anyone found a solution for the MMS error yet? I've been on the phone with both AT&T and Apple, and even completely reinstalled the OS and restored my phone to no avail. I can CHOOSE to send a photo via MMS, but it always fails. Would love to get that fixed. It's not something encoded into the microsim itself, is it? I don't really use it, so it's not a huge deal, but now that I know something's messed up it's kind of bothering me.

How long does it take most people to get the text? I waited over night and still never got one. The sim card is still in my 2G iPhone, will it still switch me over if I haven't put the sim card into a 3G iPhone or an iPhone 4?

you will need to put that sim into the iphone 4 and make a call or something. in 3 to 4 hours, you will get a text saying they have changed your data plan.

Well the problem is that I don't have an iPhone. If I put it into my LG Xenon 3G phone will it still do that?

AT&T will find out

I reactivated my 2G with the SIM from my 3GS for a boating trip last fall. Afterwards I noticed that my plan was reduced to $20, which I wasn't going to say anything about. However, 3 months later I got a text from AT&T saying they detected I was on the wrong data plan and would switch me to the pay per use unless I called and fixed it. Don't know if this was a bluff on their part, but I ended up playing it safe. In talking to the CSR she claimed they do scans every once in a while to ensure they are not be scammed.

That's not true. One of the lines in our family plan has a grandfathered unlimited iPhone data and it has a FAN discount.

I understand that, I'm am saying if you do this "loophole" you will not be eligible for the discount on the unlimited plan. It is only reapplied to the voice plan!

I used my 4G micro-sim and activated it on the 2G phone. It said it needed additional time to activate. After phone calls to AT&T, the website showed that I had $20 data plan on the 2G phone, but my 2G phone never activated. I put the micro sim card back on the 4G phone. After a few hours, I received the text and email. This was real late last night.

This morning, *3282# and the website still shows that I have the $20 data plan. As everyone else said, manually switching it to the $30 plan gives an error message.

How long does it take for the system to switch to the $30 plan? My billing cycle ended yesterday, and I think I missed the cut-off.

Ok so i found another loophole for people who do not have iphone 2g and wants to get $30 unlimited data.

This is what you will need. You will need any dumb phone's IMEI number.
I just did this yesterday night and it happened within 3 to 4 hours.

First, call 611 from your phone and enter all the necessary info and then press 0 to connect to a rep. Tell that rep you need to activate a different device (dont worry, you r not) on the line you are calling about. They will ask for the IMEI number so give them the IMEI number of a dumb phone. Dont worry, you dont really need that phone with you. Once they "take off" iphone 4 from your account, it automatically takes off data plan connected to the iphone. Now, before you hang up, tell the rep that you want to add $30 UNL web, text and email plan on that line, They will gladly add that for you. Once that done, hang up and just chill. Just keep that sim in your iphone 4. make a call or two and wait for 3 to 4 hours. You will get a text saying that you are using an iphone and your data plan has been changed. Now this will add UNL data for iphone for $30 and UNL text for $20. if you do not need text like me, just log into OLAM and take texting off like i just did, And now you will have UNL iphone data $30 plan without even getting an iphone 2g.

If anyone here wants to get a dumb phone IMEI, i have it. just PM me and i will help you out...

Question...If you give them the dumb phone's IMEI and tell them you want to add the plan, won't they say its not compatible with that phone? And wouldn't you need another SIM card to do this?

When you give them dumb phone's IMEI, you can add dumbphone's data/text plan. $30 web, email and text plan is a dumbphone's plan so they will add it no questions asked. BTW, that plan is very new. And you do not need a new sim card. If they ask, just tell them you will be using the same SIM card.

If I physically have a dumb phone, can't I just do this online without having to call 611?

Yes you can but then you will have to take out sim from iphone 4, put it in the dumb phone, make a call, wait till it updates in OLAM and then change the data plan to $30 web, mail and text plan...

It would seem to me that if you simply make the change to unlimited with a dumbphone rather than the original iphone, you won't be grandfathered for unlimited data, which is the idea behind using the 2G iphone, no?

Simply taking the iphone 4's SIM and inserting into the dumbphone and adding the new $30 unlimited dumbphone data, waiting for an OLAM update, and then moving the SIM back to the iphone 4 should only work temporarily. But, then again, using the 2G iphone really isn't guaranteed to work indefinitely either, but given that those with 2G iphone contracts were promised unlimited data, it would make more sense to stick to using the 2G iphone.

Any thoughts?

I agree with floepie.

OK i think you guys are confused here. I am talking about the new dumbphone plan they have right now. $30 gives u data, email and text. This is not the same plan as the $30 UNL iphone data grandfathered plan. So basically, you sign up for dumbphone $30 data, email and text plan and then put that sim card back into iphone 4. after 2 or 3 hours, att will recognize that u put ur sim back into iphone 4 and you will get a text saying you are using ineligible data plan with your iphone and they will automatically switch from that dumbphone data plan to the iphone grandfathered plan.

So 12 hours later, OLAM still has me at $20 unlimited data plan, even though I already received the text message. Does that mean I have to wait until the end of the billing cycle to make sure it's done correctly? My billing cycle just kicked in. I don't know if I could wait 31 days until the next one.
