I have a stupid question. If I buy a SIM off of eBay and call AT&T to activate it, do I need to explain why I have a random, unactivated SIM? If I just say I bought one on eBay because I lost mine, is that a bad idea?

no reason to put up all the hassle. Just go to your local ATT store.

Lol this way too easy.

All I had to do was call AT&T and let them know that I sold my iPhone 4 and would like to use my iPhone 2g with the iPhone 2g data plan and gave them the imei number and viola! I now have the $30 unlimited data plan on my iPhone 4 after they automatically changed the data plan soon after I started using my iPhone 4.

Life is grand when you can read and comprehend directions.

And to the person asking about the sim, it doesn't really matter. SpaceKitty is recommending buying actual sims probably because it's just the legit piece of hardware you need and won't have any potential problems, or at least shouldn't. I can't think of a reason other than that, anyways.

Go to the store if you're prepared with a story or reason for them to not activate it in the store.

The only reason you'll have to talk to AT&T at all is if you get the "your activation requires additional time" screen when activating it from iTunes. When you call them, just tell them you sold/lost/broke/ate/held wrong your iPhone 4 and want to use an iPhone 2G you bought from Craigslist or where ever. If they ask any questions about the sim (the lady I talked to asked if it was new or not) just tell them that AT&T gave you a new one and said you could activate it at home (if the sim is new) or that you are using an adapter to fit your microsim into the iPhone 2G rather than buying a new sim and wasting one (if it's your original). If your person is a little clueless like mine, they sound astounded at the possibility of using a microsim in a 2G.

Thank you very much. I'm so lost on the SIM business, I don't know what the "rules" are with them. This helps! :)

Am i screwed here? I got a 2g last week, waiting mor for ip4 to ship. I activated it using a regular sim from my old att phone which I was originally upgrading to an ip4 from. Anyway, when I get my ip4, and activate the microsim am I not going to be able to keep the unlimited data plan I now have?

I just did this and I am still on the $20 iPhone 2G plan while using 3G data. I am even using 3G on the plan right now as we speak. Should I switch the plan to the $30.00 plan right now or should I let it ride and hope it doesn't get switched back to a $25.00 2GB plan?

They will automatically upgrade your data plan to the $30 unlimited one. ;)

Tried this last night, activation couldn't be completed. Still stuck on..

"AT&T is now processing your activation.
You will receive an email confirmation once your activation is complete."

You did it wrong. You will be waiting forever.

Get a new sim and restore the iPhone with the new sim in it. Now go through and activate the iPhone once again.

Ah, figures. Thanks.

OR you can call them and ask them to. The reason this happens is because the sim you are using was probably previously in an iPhone 4, and their computers aren't programmed to allow a "downgrade" like that without a rep doing it. So just call them and make up some excuse and they'll do it for you. This saves a trip to AT&T.

SpaceKitty, you've mentioned previously in this thread that for best results a restored iPhone 2G with a brand new SIM card should be used... I have the SIM card but the iPhone 2G I'm planning on using has not been restored because the owner still uses it (on T-Mobile). How important is it to restore the iPhone prior to activating? Essentially I want to use his iPhone but I don't want to inconvenience him by wiping it clean... what's my best option here?

I had assumed I could pop in my new SIM, plug into iTunes to activate, and once I'm done he could pop his T-Mobile SIM back in and be good to go. Do you have any thoughts that you'd care to share?

Thank you.

I did this a couple days ago. I had to call the rep, and told them that i wanted to use my 2g while i was on vaction. They put me on the $20 plan, and its been that way for two days. We'll see how long that lasts :)

Can anyone confirm whether or not they were able to reapply a FAN discount after doing this? My account page on AT&T still shows the FAN number and company on the top right, but when the 2G was activated it warned me that FAN discounts could not be used with it. I'm on a family plan and am NOT the primary user (but my work discount is being used) so I thought that perhaps that would keep the discount from being removed. Can anyone offer some help?

Ever since the 3G phone came out two years ago, I used to use the original iPhone to go from the $30 data plan to the $20 data plan. I never once got it to work without restoring the phone first.

You can always backup the phone first and then restore it after you are finished. Your friend would have to sync all the apps and music when you give it back.

ok.. just wondering guys.. if i get the "need additional time" message can i just pop my sim back in my ip4 and it will still work as normal? or will it get deactivated?

i want to try this but im worried if i get busy with work i wont have time to call att back to get my sim working again.. need an active cell phone always.

Yup. That's what happened to me. You'll eventually get an email saying processing canceled and it will ask you to try it again. But your iPhone 4 will still work and function completely, unless the 2G DOES get activated somehow.. but even then you should be fine and still be able to use the 4.

ok so i should be fine either way..

also.. i borrowed a buddies iphone 2g.. the only thing is.. theres a bunch of apps and games on it right now. he has a 3gs and he basically gives this unit to his kids to play games on as a ipod touch.

if i activate the phone.. wont i lose all the games on it?

Thanks for the feedback. His phone is JB and unlocked (obviously, he's using it on T-Mobile) and, from what I've read, restoring JB from backup is tricky and it's usually best to start from scratch. I'm trying to avoid putting him through this, but it sounds like it's my only choice? Unless anyone knows a really easy way to restore his JB after the phone is wiped to factory settings...

So wait, just to clarify, if I buy a used iphone 2G on ebay, and a microsim adapter, can I do the trick where I put my i4 sim into the 2g, activate it there and get unlimited, and then pop it back into my iphone 4? Or will it not work if the 2g wasn't previously on my account? I'm new to AT&T as of the iphone 4 release last month.

SpaceKitty, if I call AT&T with the SIM card ICCID number and the iPhone 2G IMEI number can they activate it that way? In other words, instead of using iTunes to activate (which requires a restore, and I want to avoid that) I activate over the phone, tell them to give me the 2G unlimited data plan, and then hopefully I can "use" the iPhone 2G without restoring. I don't think that would screw up my friend's service since he uses T-Mobile (the IMEI will be registered with AT&T only once, on my account).

Then I can cut to SIM to micro size and put it into my iPhone 4. My friend could put his T-Mobile SIM back into the iPhone 2G and never miss a step. Thoughts?
