Can I do this if I don't have an iPhone 4?

I currently own a pretty basic ATT LG phone, i've got a spare 2G iPhone that a family member no longer uses, and i've got a spare new sim card as well.

All I do is put the new sim card in the phone, activate the phone with iTunes (choose the unlimited data of course) and then once thats done I can use that data service without an iPhone?

I've read all throughout here but it seems like everyone is using an iPhone 4 afterwards. I wanted to know if this is possible if you don't want to use an iPhone after you activate the new sim card with the unlimited data. I plan on getting the new Android phone ATT is releasing Sunday and I want the unlimited for that.

Mine still says iPhone + 200 text. It's been a couple of hours since doing this.

mine still says that also. i tried to change to the unlimited 3G plan online but i get an error, "The feature you are trying to add is not compatible with the phone/device on record in the billing system." I have the 3GS

Did you guys use a new sim card? Or use the already activated iPhone sim card from the iPhone 4? I think from what I read, but haven't done myself yet is that using a fresh sim card on the 2g then swapping it to the 4g wouldn't cause errors.

I plan on doing this sometime soon, as long as I can find a cheap 2g.

I'll be trying it tonight with my already-activated iP4 microsim and taping it to the iP2g sim tray. Will report back how it goes. (=

Tried this today. Took the microsim out of my i4 and used clear scotch tape to "build" a sim adapter for it. Slid it in the 2G phone and activated. Went through the process and all was well with the 2G. Pulled out the sim and released it from its tape prison and put it back in my i4. Got the text 2 hrs later and everything seems fine now. Checked the account and I'm on unlimited data and SMS/MMS. Tested sending an MMS message and it sent fine.

That is good to hear!, now I need the sellers to respond back to me so I can pick up a 2G and get this thing going...:)

No need for any new sim cards. I'd already activated my iP4 (as a new AT&T customer) and had the original iPhone (previously jailbroken and unlocked on T-Mobile) just sitting there. Took out the iP4 microsim and taped it per instructions in this thread. Restored the iPhone and walked through activation in iTunes. When I got the confirmation that it had been activated, I just put the microsim back into the iP4 and everything works. Logged in to AT&T and the unlimited data/text shows up now... just waiting for the text that says I need to be switched.

*update* Got the text and all is good now. (= The FAN account information is back on, too.

Can you verify that the FAN discount is being applied to your monthly data charge again (i'm assuming it should since the system switched it over, to the new data plan) after the switch has been made? Just want to verify that it got switched over, because the 2G the FAN discount did not apply towards data only voice.:)

This. I've been waiting for someone to confirm this as well.

I plan to buy an used 2g just for this reason, then immediately sell it XD. Maybe you can do the same.

Ok, I just got a reply back from "treyjustice" and he states the following in regards to if the FAN discount gets re-applied towards the DATA and VOICE monthly charge and he states it only discounts the VOICE.

"I still have my FAN discount but the discount is not eligible on the unlimited data plan! Only the voice plan!"

Bummer, I don't know if I want to do this anymore, because I no longer work for the company.:(

Thanks for the info. Does that mean you can get the discount on unlimited data if you are currently with your company?

That I am not sure about, because it might something I guess coming from the 2G iPhone data plan that did not qualify for data FAN discount maybe, so not sure if it would make a difference even if I was with the company.

If someone else can check their account as well and let us know that would be a great help. Thanks

You CANNOT get a FAN discount on the unlimited DATA plan. Only the tiered ones. So yes you lose that discount when you go to unlimited!

Just call att CS, it's easy, I called and said I returned my Iphone4 due to reception issues and would like to activate a Iphone 2g that I bought from Craigslist and the rep asked me for the Iphone 2g IMEI # and that's it, now I have unlimited data + 200 msg for $20 on my iphone 4. Not sure how long I will have unlimited data for $20 but don't mind as long as I have unlimited data for $30

That's not true. One of the lines in our family plan has a grandfathered unlimited iPhone data and it has a FAN discount.

I just called premier customer service and had them check my FAN discount. He said that it had been applied, and then I had him go over what my bill will look like.

So my FAN discount is supposed to be 23%, but somehow now it shows a 24% discount. The CS rep then said that the 24% discount applies to the primary line and all services under it: voice plan (59.99), data (30.00) and messaging (20.00). I told him I didn't think the discount applied towards messaging but he said the system is calculating it.

Perhaps doing this iPhone2g thing rolled me back to an old discount? So I dunno... I'll just wait for my first bill to see what's up.

Just did this today, used my iphone 4 microsim and a microsim adapter, process went smoothly, now have unlimited data and unlimited messaging on my iphone 4! MMS is currently not working. It's not a HUGE deal for me since I never really use it anyway, but has anyone who had this issue managed to get it fixed?

I haven't received my text message yet. It's been a day or two:rolleyes:

I did this about a week or so ago, and since i'm new to att i called two days later to see what all my fan discount applied to. they told me voice and data, but then went to confirm the phone i was using and the system had me in as a 3g... which since i have a 4 and i used a 2g to get the unlimited, i'm not sure where the 3 came from  maybe she meant 2g? i didn't question it. she just had me give her the emei number so she could update it in the system. when I get my next bill i'll make sure my fan discount is correct, but I would guess even if it disappears from data you can just call and have it reapplied without needing any proof (for those of you not with your companies anymore). just make sure they have the correct phone you're using in their system and it should be reapplied.

I got a used 2g just to use for this, done with it now, willing to sell it for $60 shipped in the US.

Ok, so it looks like the FAN should get applied to the data once the ATT end detects that you are using a new iPhone 4, and no longer using the 2G data plan, but on the unlimited.

This kind of makes sense, but just wanted to make sure.

No problem, glad you got it all worked out. Hope everything goes smoothly for you! It seems like it either works really well or turns into a hassle.
