How to Get iOS 27's New Siri AI: Join the Waitlist First

I requested access a little late after realizing I needed to do so and am still on the waitlist an hour later. So it's not instant.
The wait list is almost certainly due to server capacity. Remember that Siri relies heavily on Cloud Compute. If they let everyone in, it’ll swamp their servers. Today is day one where everyone will probably get in, just because the servers are empty. When all the 27 OS’es go live in September, they’ll already have a large number of release version servers set up.
If you load the beta later, you may not get in on a timely basis.
I’m in. First impressions are not great, but I’m hoping that this is down to the phone still indexing. First question I asked was find pictures I took in Tokyo. I got a response saying it couldn’t find any photos taken there. I then pulled up a photo myself and asked why Siri couldn’t find it. Siri provided this response:

System stability. You can hold off the flood gates if too many people tried to join simultaneously and the infrastructure hasn’t scaled to match the demand. Also, the waiting list was not instantaneous. It still took maybe half an hour.
what device? I'm curious if they are gating things for compatibility. Saw something about requiring 17 pro for the newer on device functionality. And wondering if those will be the first allowed in. Older devices that work with Apple Intelligence will use private cloud more.

I think we are going to be left out for a while - looks like US only.
They only said ‘available in Eglish’ during the presentation, and later specified it won’t be available in Europe/China. There was no reference to US only. I’m hopeful. If not, I’ll change my region to US.
Funny, I just tried the same prompt for a different city. It showed the pictures. I then asked to only show pictures with a person and it did

Can someone who already has the new Siri explain this? It seems that only the "Customize how Siri sounds" feature requires an iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, or iPhone Air. Does that mean all older supported models use a local Siri model, or how does it work?

People are confused in general.
The devices which were sold with Apple Intelligence support get Apple Intelligence support. There are relatively few new Siri features (richer voice quality controls, Siri in the camera app) that require newer hardware.
Behind the scenes, Apple Intellgence is built to use an on-device model which has access to all of your information and context. That local model falls back to making queries to a larger, more power-hungry model in the cloud for questions it is unable to answer. It locally will package up just the information it thinks is needed by that cloud-based model to answer the question, and requires that the cloud infrastructure not be able to save that information once the response is sent back. Apple separately has the ability to call ChatGPT with queries, and in that case you get a consent pop-up since OpenAI does not make the same guarantees about privacy.
The primary confusion is likely that in iOS 27 there will be two different on-device models, depending on the underlying hardware. Newer devices can attempt a bit more work locally before giving up and recruiting cloud infrastructure. Older hardware will need to go to the cloud more often. But they can still both answer the same questions.
There are unanswered questions such as whether you can opt out of the more advanced model. That model likely uses significantly more of your phone's storage, and for simple queries it may very well eat up more battery and take longer to get the same answer.

Some Canadians got in, I’m guessing maybe because I first enrolled on my iPad (m4) instead of iPhone 17 pro max.
Still waiting here, although I downloaded ah hour later from the release time.

I am quite aware of how this works. I’ve worked in IT and have been an Apple user since the sledgehammer hit the big screen. Still annoying though considering how their entire AI strategy has been a cluster****.
