The laptop from the exterior is not bad. I like the black matte look at the shiny HP logo, but in terms of the inside of the laptop, the keyboard is almost a replica of the Mac keyboard. Take for instance the "F" and "J" keys, the raised bump is an apple keyboard signature design. The shape of the keys at the top where ESC and F keys lie are also in the half sized keyboard keys that apple has used for years. The glass track pad and its position is also a replica of what apple has been using in their macbook/air/pro line up for years.
Just saying, but my Dell laptop from 2007 has all of those things except for the glass touchpad.

I thought the idea of ports at the back being interesting. If I was on the HP design team, I wouldn't know how to make a laptop thinner and still fit 3 USB-C ports. What is interesting is that apple could've gone with something similar but they didn't choose to. They rather leave 3mm extra and allow the USB-C port to sit on the side. I understand that the appeal of 3 ports over 1 seems enticing but on a daily basis, would you be willing to close the lid every-time so you can see where your ports are just to plug in a USB device or stick?
Or... you could just look around without closing the lid

My laptop sits on a swivel stand so it is at a better ergonomic height, with a Bluetooth keyboard on my desk.

It takes less than a second to swivel it around to pull out a plug if it was on the back.

Perhaps an improvement on that HP design would be to have a plug on each side of that thicker area aswell as the back of it.

But even for the MB target market, it still seems like the mag adapter would be welcomed. It's such a clean, sweet piece of tech. Shame to lose that.

I was surprised that Apple eliminated MagSafe entirely. They could have moved it to the AC adapter end of the cable. That would have given them a (future) standard port while retaining the MagSafe disconnect. And actually, having it on the charger end might even be better: Think of a laptop sitting on a desk with a number of devices cabled to it. Disconnecting at the laptop end means the cord has to pull through the other cables. Whereas disconnecting at the charger means there's no chance of pulling the other devices down with it.

I've been around long enough to know that laptop hinges are a common failure point. Ports at a thicker back require a more delicate hinge design. I can imaging that many of these HP's will end up with broken hinges way before the laptop is obsolete.

Fanboys are in flames again.
If Apple would have released this the hinge and colour would be groundbreaking innovations :D

IMO this is the best looking laptop ever made. My MBP is fugly in comparison.

Not sure about the design, its definitely different. Nice to see three USB C ports and i Series processors.

Starting to think Apple is withholding new laptops to push the iPad Pro line, will wait till WWDC before weighing up the alternatives.

Apple was explicit. The Macbook is for the wireless world. They made that crystal clear in its introduction.

We can compare to other machines that don't have that goal in mind, and it's a drawback for many users, but it's like complaining that a truck can tow while a Miata can't.

so the spectre (or any other recent ultra thin laptop) that manages to add more ports for the users benefit and not to the detriment of the "wireless world" has another goal in mind?

if the next macbook adds another port will apple have a section on macbook page for the wired world?

this car comparison makes no sense.

Have you worked most of your adult life, in a laboratory at the world's leading computer and smartphone manufacturer - Apple? Is it your daily task to try out many hundreds of positions on dummies with sensors attached, making close observations and taking precise measurements on many, many different iterations of prototypes? Are you a member of a team of highly talented design engineers, each with a specific skill set, focusing chiefly on that one VERY particular area of the product?

Have you worked HERE?:

Yeah, I'll side with Apple on this one, thanks anyway, but they kinda, sorta know what they're on about, after 40+ years.

nice collection of pictures but still this fancy department has approved a laptop with usb ports on the left side and a mouse with a cord so short it was hardly usable on the right side. they also approved of various versions of imacs with non adjustable height which makes it hard to adhere to their ergonomic guidelines without various accessories.

So that means I have to choose between a power cord and a mouse or hard drive connection????? Please. Your argument has ZERO merit. That's what I hate about a forum where certain users always defend Apple even when they make the dumbest design choices imaginable. No logic + all emotion = Tiresome. That notebook should have either had two USB-C ports or at least a separate power connection. PERIOD.

As I already said, it's amazing this HP model can manage those ports and be THINNER than Apple. But I know. "Apple was explicit." What was that they were explicit in? That their design SUCKED? Yes, now we have the correct answer. ;)

What's this we? Don't include me in your view of the world. Asking to not have to choose between having AC power and using a peripheral IN NO (insert favorite adjective here) WAY in this Universe or any other makes that Macbook into a "truck".

It's a POOR DESIGN as this HP model proves by providing multiple ports and still being thinner (Lotus to your Mazda?)

Hardly.

Those are the home keys for touch typing. People used to put a drop of nail polish on them so they'd be easy to find without looking. F+J is for the index fingers.

IBM used a raised bar on the F+J keys starting with their 1983 F-AT keyboard.

Starting from the same time, Apple originally put bumps (not bars) on the D+K keys for the middle fingers, which messed up an entire generation of users who learned on Apple computers at school, and later had to adapt to using F+J. In 1997 Apple finally gave in and switched to F+J, starting with the PowerBook G3.

Apple even has an old archived help page on this:

https://support.apple.com/kb/TA34988?locale=en_US

The help page suggests swapping the key caps if you're confused by the bump. Then, in typical Apple fashion, it notes that doing so will void your keyboard warranty.

No you have a choice to get a computer that fits your needs. The MacBook is clearly not for you, why are you so hung up on that model?

I have never ever been interested in an HP computer before, especially not a laptop, but this looks pretty nice to me. But yeah that hinge is rather bad I agree. I think I would get things stuck in there. Knowing me, probably my finger. Lol

Nice to see the rest of the industry step up their game a little bit from the horrible clunky beige boxes they used to make.

No, I'd dislike it just as much if Apple released it.

Guys, look at it from an objective standpoint, rather than comparing it to Apple's Macbook. This HP laptop is:
  • Ultraportable (on account of the thinness and weight)
  • Attractive (subjective, but it's definitely a change from the sea of aluminum and plastic competitors)
  • Powerful (Core i5 or i7 processor)
  • Skimpy on ports (just USB-C), but at least enough to plug in a few things
For someone looking for a highly portable Windows machine, this wins. You could actually run Photoshop on it or several dozen programs at once with no performance issues like with the Macbook and its Core M processor.

If I could install OS X on it (or hell, Windows 7), I'd buy one.

This laptop is probably the best looking laptop ever. I'm sure there are a lot of people envying this design, but yes it is much better than what Apple has to offer. Good job, HP. Also, it's quite affordable, something that many companies including Apple would never do. If this was Apple's product, many of you would be saying how innovative and attractive this device is and Apple would price it around 2500.00 to 3000.00 dollars. Also, I'm glad the display is 1080p. This means that the battery life will be top-notch. On Windows 10 especially with the terrible scaling issues of high resolution displays, this is perfect.

Sell it then and put your money where your mouth is. You'll be back to Apple in no time.

Looking at the back of this, it would seem one of my concerns about USb-C has been verified: only one of the ports is able to charge the device. While this makes sense from a technical perspective, it will most certainly result in some confusion among consumers. ("Is is power cable connected?" becomes "Is the power cable connected specifically to the port on the far-right?")

Not according to HP, you just need to visit their site and read...
