This looks like an awesome phone, but two questions:

1. Where in the hell would you carry this thing? A briefcase or a man-purse?

2. Is Android only for Gmail accounts or can you set up an Exchange account with another email account? I despise Google.

There is another program called "Email" which can be used, but if you "despise google" than you really won't like android.

That's what I want to know. Of course by making anything bigger you can beef the specs up...but this thing is huge.

I really hope Apple stays the same screen size as it's small enough to fit into pockets but big enough to watch stuff. Let's not make things bigger for the sake of being bigger - it's a phone.

Unless apple can blow me away with the next iphone, the evo or the nexus one will be my next phone. :D This Evo really does look amazing. I'm tired of the iphone os and want somthing new. Plus saving a few buck's with sprint will be nice on the wallet.

Android 2.1 supports multiple EMail accounts including Microsoft Exchange :).

If the next iPhone is any bigger, I won't be buying it. I think people want too much of phones lately (well geeks do lol). Soon, people will be wanting a 6.5 inch screen on their phones. When will it stop? Just use a damn netbook.

The iPhone is pretty damn big as a phone goes. I'd like an iPhone mini, as I used to love the size of my Nokia 8310. That thing was dinky man. :D

Well all my contacts were in gmail already, as far is iCal I just switched to Google Calender.

There may be a way to sync the two or at least export existing ones, but I didn't bother.

As far as using the google services in place of Apple's frankly I prefer Google's, its push so I get updates as they happen, no need to wait for mobile me to sync everything in 5, 10, or 15 min interavals
You can export your Apple address book to Gmail and then any Android phone will pull that. Also, you can do the same with your iCal calendars. Import them into Google Calendar and then you can set up your iCal to use CalDAV so you get 2-Way sync between your iCal and Google.

That's what I do. Even with my iPhone I have all my computers and phone just get 2 way sync with my Google calendar and Google contacts. It's just easier that way than trying to remember what computer I saved an event on.

Who cares about a front facing camera? Even if the iPhone did get it what would you use it for?

- AT&T wouldn't allow it over their network, so the only video calling you could do would be through skype or at least WiFi only. This might be very useful for some, but I'd use it once or twice a year.

- If I was a 13 year old girl, I could see it being useful so I could take self portrait pictures of myself

Besides that, what good is it? To me all that draws me to the EVO is the large and detailed screen and the new OS. If Apple can redesign the OS and put a larger, more detailed screen then I will be more then happy.

Haha, I agree with you. Front facing camera is probably my least favorite of the features. I don't really have much use for it. It's not like all my friends will have an EVO so we can video chat all the time.

I can think of some cool applications for it though that don't involve video chat... Head tracking, eye tracking things mostly. Maybe even gestures above the phone. I'm sure someone will write a pretty cool app for it.

Great looking phone from the surface, although I wonder about battery life.

This summer is going to be very interesting with iPhone 4.0

In the last 6 months we've really seen some amazing development as far as hardware and software for smart phones.

I hope Apple comes through.

++. This is the first phone I've seen that makes me give the iPhone a second thought, which is cool if Apple indeed steps up to the plate in the aftermath.

These things are cyclical and before long, when technology alows it, they will cram all of these features into a small phone again. And then new technology will come out, that requires a bigger phone to house it all, and so the cycle continues.

People follow trends, and always will do. I myself went big, to small and back to big with the iPhone.

Is this really a serious question? Front facing camera would be for video chat with your significant other or whoever. You say you would use it 1-2x per year, but I never thought I would use any of iPhone's many uses prior to buying one. Now, I find myself using many features I would never have dreamed about using.

And you're absolutely right about AT&T not allowing this over the network. Their network wouldn't be able to handle it. This is why the phone this thread is about is being released on Sprint and to be used with their WiMax, which would easily be able to handle it.

I guess being solely on AT&T is going to hinder the development of the iPhone. Too bad. I'll seriously be looking at this phone come July. There will be no knee jerk iPhone buying.

It's not like all my friends will have an EVO so we can video chat all the time.

True, but even sharing this feature with one other person would be golden. There are people on here that travel quite a bit and being able to frequently see their family members' faces would be priceless.

That's why my netbook and my macbook pro have webcams on them. My iMac, my GF's Macbook, my Mom's Macbook, my brother's Macbook Pro, my other brother's laptop and my dads Lenovo all have webcams too...

Webcams aren't hard to come by. If you're on a business trip and can't be bothered to bring a laptop then I understand. I have a netbook so I can bring that when I travel. I don't think it'll be used very much for video chats. I rarely even end up using the feature in iChat on my computers now that I am not in a long distance relationship anymore. I'm more excited to see what else people do with it.

Skype? Who doesn't have Skype these days?

I agree. I think video chat on a mobile phone is still a niche feature. I do know that on every phone I've used that has a video camera you can almost watch the power drain on the battery going down every second that the camera is active. I don't think you'd be able to have a decently long video chat without connecting to a power source. Between video conferencing and using a phone as a wifi hotspot, a battery wouldn't even last 2 hours.

I'd love to be proven wrong though.

Beautiful phone, however sprints 4g is very very very limited. Its gonna be a while until we can use the "4g" part of this device.

Agreed...at least for the Denver Metro. According to Sprint's coverage map, there is 4G in my small home town in TX of ~12,000 people but Denver doesn't have any 4G! I'm sure it is in the works, but that was surprising to say the least.

I like it, HDMI out, Front Camera. Apple has gone from a company that leads the pack to one that plays catch up so, yes, this is the phone to model the next iPhone after. Wait, I forgot, HDMI is on the list of things nobody on earth needs, like Blu-Ray and Flash.

I've been waiting for a front facing camera mobile device for a while, thought it would be the iPad....nope. Video chatting with my wife and daughter while traveling would be nice without having to break out the laptop or rigging up the webcam to the mini for them.

please come to the uk. i don't care about 4g, i just want that big bright screen. the iphone is starting to look quite horrible with its big boarders wasting space, not only at the top and bottom but the sides too. it actually makes the iphone look bigger than the evo in some of the photos.

my one worry is the touchscreen tech. i know there's a difference in how the iphone and HTC's work (and the iphone seems to work better, no missed taps/presses/slides) and i wish HTC would apply the same tech as apple. something to do with the screen picking up a current from your finger i think? i don't know entirely, but these android phones need it.

After 3 years with an iPhone and syncing over iTunes etc., how would a phone like this work with my Mac (iCal, Address Book etc.)?

Is it an easy transition?

I have my Google Calendar in iCal as a CalDAV account, and have Address Book configured to sync with Google, so all of my appointments and contacts already sync with Google automatically. Moving to a phone like this would be extremely easy for me.

This phone looks incredible, and as a Sprint customer, this will make me seriously reconsider leaving them for the iPhone. I will wait until this summer to see what Apple unveils, but if it's less impressive than the EVO 4G, I will stick with Sprint, buy the EVO, and keep my iPod Touch and upgrade that to iPhone OS 4.0.

If they do release something more impressive than the EVO 4G... I'll probably need to buy a new pair of pants... :p To replace the ones I had to buy after the EVO announcement yesterday. :D

I hear you. I usually don't get all worked up over phones, but yesterday was the first time I can recall saying "holy ****" upon first laying eyes upon a smartphone. It's not really one thing about the EVO, but the entire package that is so impressive. And I'm not really that big into Android.

Well people know me that I love my Palm Pre....

But i'm sorry Palm, i think HTC has got my money this summer. Due for an upgrade any i live in NYC where 4G is supposed to roll out soon.

does Apple's contract with AT&T ends this summer?

I don't think an iphone 4G will do any better than the iphone 3GS right now. I think the only way the iphone can still be on top is to go on all 4 phone carriers.

They have? I figured that they were not that popular and the only phone that I knew that could take front-facing were flip phone that used he extrnal display to show what the camra was looking at and even then that feature was rarely used so it was not really missed as the slider and candy bar style became the popular design again so front facing camra was dump as the would need to install 2 camras to allow frount facing use.

The front-facing camera used to be the way you could tell if a phone had 3G or not (WCDMA 384-kbit/s not HSPA, which is techically 3.5G). Because back then the only thing 3g was good for was video-calling and sending MMS-messages faster because all the mobile web browsers sucked back then. But strangely since the launch of the iPhone, a lot of manufacturers stopped adding these cameras.

sorry but no. I can think of a lot of 3G phone before the iPhone that did not have a front facing camera.
