It's not that much bigger. Maybe 1/4 - 1/3" more in height and width, is all.

More space seems to be given to the screen:

Code:
                EVO 3GS

Res 800x480 480x320
Screen [SIZE="4"]4.3" 3.5"[/SIZE]
Height 4.8" 4.5"
Width 2.6" 2.4"
Depth 0.5" 0.5"

uhhh it is a lot bigger and makes the iphones screen look tiny... its almost a whole inch bigger... I'm hoping for the new IPhone to do the same size 4.5" or so... looks really nice!

OH AND P.S. That scroll Wheel is outrageous!!! try putting that in your pocket every two seconds without it breaking... thank god iphone dont have something like that!

I think you did not understand what he was pointing out.

The screen is an inch better yes but the hieight and width of the devise is not that much larger.

The iPhone has a lot of wasted space on it with those boarders so that is how HTC got a much larger screen with only a minor change in physical sizes of the devices.

As for the scroll wheel they tend to hold up pretty well over the life of the device.

Yes I conquer it is a lot bigger screen with not much more size in the phone...

I beg to differ, do you know how many blackberry devices go through a new ball change? Ive never had a BB but have actually had to take back a few friends for them to pay 9$ and get a new ball installed.. the ball always acts up and is like the "stylus pen" of the new aged phones! LOL

regardless its a really cool looking phone, I like the kickstand and the screen size, I dont like the keyboard and am sure its not nearly as smooth as the OSX..

Finally, 8MP camera with flash is incredible, I PRAY for the new Iphone to come out with similar specs... if not I may switch!

What are y'all talking about? Evo doesn't have that.

I really hope Apple is paying attention. The new phone is nice and offers a lot of nice features that many people like. Sprint may keep some away but if it's offered on multiple carriers it will pull people away from the iPhone.

sorry but no. I can think of a lot of 3G phone before the iPhone that did not have a front facing camera.

only in america do 3g phones not have a frount facing cameras, in the rest of the world it is atypical to not have it

also I am 98% sure that the battery life will be enough for one days usage (just like the iphone) but if you do decide to hammer the hell out of it then it will be a simple task of popping off the back cover and placing in a second battery for you to do some more battery intensive tasks all for a grand total of about 10 quid, no more panicing that you will run out of battery at 4.30pm

Looks amazing!

Apple is going to need a big anouncement this summer, I don't think a new notification system and better battery life will be enough.

...and that's about all Apple will grant us with the iPhone 4 most likely.

i've never, ever, ever said this, but I think I'm switching over to Sprint for their new phone. the iPhone has really not kept up to the standards it set back in 2007.

That's why my netbook and my macbook pro have webcams on them. My iMac, my GF's Macbook, my Mom's Macbook, my brother's Macbook Pro, my other brother's laptop and my dads Lenovo all have webcams too...

Webcams aren't hard to come by. If you're on a business trip and can't be bothered to bring a laptop then I understand. I have a netbook so I can bring that when I travel. I don't think it'll be used very much for video chats. I rarely even end up using the feature in iChat on my computers now that I am not in a long distance relationship anymore. I'm more excited to see what else people do with it.

I'm in a LDR, I don't have a webcam on my laptop, and no USB one works with my Powerbook G4 (processor speed), so I'd find much use out of one if it was on my phone.

if you live in one of the many 4G cities available or available before the end of the year, it's a hard choice NOT to switch to Sprint and the Evo. Their rate plan is the cheapest PLUS you'll get 4G speeds.

I'm confused. I thought ALL the carriers in the U.S. were going to use the same kind of 4G which isn't CDMA at all.

Am I wrong?

Otherwise it's odd to say that it's "possible on a CDMA carrier" when their 4G will not be CDMA. What makes it a "CDMA carrier" at that point?

That's not the case. Even if they all used the same 4G, they'd still need their EVDO/EDGE/GPRS etc. network to fall back on, as there's no way 4G will be suitable for nationwide coverage anytime soon. AT&T and Verizon are backing LTE, which is different from WiMax.

Second, from what I have seen, there is nothing guaranteeing carriers will be using the same frequency bands for their own implementations of 4G. Talks of Wimax put it in a large frequency spectrum from 2.4 up to 66 GHz. I'm not sure which bands are licensed or are going to be licensed. Remember that AT&T and T-mobile, while both being GSM, don't use the same 3G bands.

They've not commented on pricing, and it's likely the rates will be higher for a 4G phone.

I just listened to Sprint's keynote stream a few minutes ago and Dan Hesse pretty much said there wouldn't be an extra charge 4G. He also mentioned it would be unlimited - i.e. no cap limits.

But even if they did charge $10 a month for it you wouldn't have a plan more expensive than AT&T's.

Well, you're on top of it. They mentioned no caps yesterday but from what was said yesterday, people were expecting a 4G surcharge.

We'll have to wait until a GSM version is announced. I do hope one is on the way.

There wont be a GSM version of this. HTC built it exclusively for Sprint to be their 4G flagship phone. There may be something running a snapdragon and with similar specs and dimensions going to the UK and/or GSM, but it wont be this device.

This phone is an absolute POWERHOUSE!

I need it in my life and i don't care how much it costs!

I just hope they release a GSM variant for us in Europe.

I hope Apple do try to counter this as i don't WANT to leave the Apple collective, but if the better hardware lies with another manufacturer then i WILL.

The better hardware almost always lies with another manufacturer. There's a reason a lot of people stick with Apple products anyway.

Like what? What's better about locked down and wall-gardened iPhoneOS versus open and thriving Android?

Now that they have been completely surpassed by both hardware and OS, the only thing Apple left is their App Store.. It's great for those who need to choose between 500 different tip calculators and flashlight apps.

I think he meant manufacturer other than Apple...

I seriously don't think Apple is going to get by this summer with mediocre updates. Speed just don't do it.

Yea, a processor upgrade for sure. Probably to another custom processor like the iPad. There is no 4G network for them to go to though. We've already been graced with such high tech advancements such as Cut/Copy/Paste and MMS. ;)

I don't know, it's going to take more than a new processor and more RAM to keep me an iPhone user. I hope they can deliver something great though! I'd love to have another awesome phone to chose from!

Another good device that kind of got dusted under the carpet was the Samsung Galaxy S that was announced yesterday. Looks really nice, but it's no EVO. :p

Don't forget Dell Mini 5 / Streak. I am going to have tough time choose between that and EVO.

As to iPhone 4, here's what I predict it's going to get:

  • Processor upgraded to underclocked iPad version (PA-Semi A4)
  • 64GB storage option
  • Updated slimmed-down casing
  • Better battery
  • Few iPhoneOS changes - improved notification system, limited multitasking (50% chance)

Yep, a nice phone for 2009, but no EVO.

I think people are forgetting that the iPhone is a marriage of hardware and software. The iPhone os is still overall superior. Hardware is the easy part. Everyone can (for the most part) get the same hardware. What apple does which is better than anyone right now is bring great software to great hardware. I expect the next version of iPhone to do the same.

Check out what this guy said about his droid recently:

We're not talking about the Droid... We're talking about newer phones with better hardware and a newer version of the OS.

Personally, I like the look and feel of HTC Sense UI more than that of my iPhone. But that's just me.
