I'd still prefer a band at the top, but I am a notch hater. On a phone that is 18.5:9 like the Samsung, I don't expect the hole to interfere with video content very much. Games on the other hand...I can see mobile gamers hating it.

Didn't realise that sticking on a black tape would enable 3D face recognition or suddenly make the rest of the display edge-to-edge.

Maybe I'm doing it wrong. @AngerDanger, could you help me out with a GIF outlining how to follow Bacillus' steps? I'm really struggling.
Look, man, I've got problems of my own trying to GIF this article!

I absolutely hate this design. A random hole in the screen just looks wrong. I personally think Samsung has the best design at the moment with their thin but uniform bezels on top and bottom. Sadly, even they seem to be going from that.

Apple makes design decisions so their products stand out from others. When you see that notch there is no doubt it is an iphone. (Same reason Apple doesn't make black earbuds.) Now that the front bezels are gone, Apple needs the notch to make their phones recognizable to others.

There's not a chance in hell I'd own a Huawei device. I don't like the hole punch design at all combined with the chin. Call me weird but I like the notch design, and more importantly, I like the security of Face ID, which comes at the cost of a significantly more advanced front camera system therefore the notch is necessary takeoff I'll take.

I prefer the Pixel 3. Top and bottom chin to accommodate front firing stereo speakers. Just keep the bezel top and bottom to a minimum.

This could have been a lovely design for phones not requiring Face ID. However, all I can see is that wasted space at the bottom that could have been where the camera fitted if they could not get the screen to fit the whole space.

Just a couple of years to go, when Microled arrives all the sensors will be behind the display, with Microled there's close to 100% of free space in-between the lads so plenty of space for those sensors to "look" through the lens.

I've been holding out on selling my X for an XS Max in hope whatever is next from Apple has an update notch design. Knowing them and like the design series before the X, it'll be around for a long time.

I've never had a problem with the notch from Day 1; add to the that the fact that NO ONE has been able to eliminate the chin other than Apple.

iPhone still the best looking phone on the planet. Sorry haters...

Maybe it's just me, but these designs with a chin at the bottom just feel kind of incomplete

I'm as much of a fanboy as anyone else here and have found something to like about every iPhone except maybe the 5C. Come on though, that is completely subjective. :)

As a notch-lover, it must drive you crazy that you could have achieved the same effect with a piece of black tape on earlier iPhones - years ago

You could, but there's no reason why you would want to. No one prefers the notch to uninterrupted screen. The question is how to best deal with the electronics that need to be in that spot for the front camera, Face ID, and light sensor. Apple's approach prioritizes functionality, in that Face ID is a much more secure system but one that can't be hidden as easily. It also preserves corner display areas, which for reasons discussed in UI manuals going back to the 1980's are more useful than a center display area. By contrast, the corner-punch approach is better for displaying photos and video but can't accommodate Face ID functionality and will cover some UI elements. One can agree with Apple's choice here without building a "notch-lover" straw man.

Why, what's wrong with the 12 megapixels?
You know this will have movie directors and pro photographers falling over themselves to use these phones for shoots just like all the other Android phones. Wait...their not shooting Commercially released films or magazine covers with Android phones. I was sure they were since their cameras are said to be soooo much better than IPhones.
