So obviously I have never seen or used this in real life, but I feel like this would be way worse than the notch. Personally the notch doesn't bother me at all (I have actually grown to like it). It is structured so you kind of forget that it's there, especially for how one typically uses their phone vertically. The little "ears" just become drop-down menus (that highlight little bits of info), and it makes sense. This hole, on the other hand -- I feel like it would look like there was something on the screen at all times that you couldn't get rid of. Again, I would need to see it person, but I don't think this will "blend away" nearly as well as the notch.
You are overthinking it. Both notch and a hole are just the screen obstructions. The smaller the one is the better. Location matters somewhat but mostly due to proximity to the screen center.

All notches are ugly. The small corner notch is like going to the theater and someone's head from standing up is blocking the corner view. Even worse is the the wide notch that's like a bus parked sideways blocking a drive-in theater.

Other companies should shamelessly copy this idea since it's the best notchless implementation so far.

Now you have to worry about not breaking just one display but two, and then there's battery life.
Wait a couple of years, under display sensors will arrive as soon as microleds are a viable solution.

Aesthetically, possibly - there's still a chin. But that's down to the eye of the beholder.

Functionally? Absolutely not. The notch needs to be the size it is to house the Face ID components. Without that, it's form over function (which ironically people accuse Apple of).

There is no eye of the beholder, the chin is very obvious. If you’re going to go to great lengths for a “hole punch” camera, how on Earth is there STILL a chin?

I love how articles like this criticise that it has a chin and it’s not a full-screen design, with the implication that Apple actually produce a device that has a full-screen design. Which they don’t.

You can get two Nubia X phones for the price of one iPhone Xs Max which costs $599 to repair the back glass so the price of a new Nubia X.

True... but from right to left it is symmetrical. That hole punch would drive me crazy!

Anyway, it is interesting to me that people find the hole punch reasonable... but this is why there are different options. I REALLY HOPE APPLE DOESN'T GO FOR THE HOLE PUNCH!
I hate asymmetrical too. So botch or hole I'm not a fan of. If I had to choose I would go with the one plus notch and black outvthe top so it just looks like a besel instead.

This seems like the worst of both worlds; it's asymmetrical vertically and horizontally without the hardware to make 3D face scanning a security feature to rival Face ID.

And then there's the fact that it still has a chin.

Holepunch = Fail 1

Chin = Fail 2

A one-two combination of Fail does not equal a win. So you speak the truth.

At least the woman on the screen is attractive. Anyone know who she is?

I wasn't comparing them did I, I just said you now have to worry about 2 displays, that's all.

My point is you should be more concerned about the $599 cost to replace the iPhone Xs Max backglass which is the cost of a new modern notchless dual-screen phone.

the new iPad pros have a good compromise on bezel and symmetrical design. albeit on a bigger device..something similar would be great.

Um.

Yes indeed, if you leave out most sensors on the front and don't even have a front camera, you can reduce the bezel significantly.

Brilliant.

How many Nubia X phones do I have to stack to get a front camera and facial recognition?

I would love to see the day phones have no more cameras and no more Touch ID. I just want a surface for multitouch galore and stylus use, all screen no BS, no buttons, nothing physical. If I want buttons and cameras I should have the option of attachments. I just want the future. The future is all screen nothing to interrupt my enjoyment of my personal device. This is the era of the ugliest chin and camera cutout phones ever. At least my 512GB note nine is a mega monster yeah !

I thought you would have liked this latest design trend?
In an ultimate effort to do so, I tried to inhibit my first elementary reactions and reconsidered The Notch in its native US context. But in that effort, it seems to keep reminding me of D. Trumps fluttering white pony - and an assorted design trend that ultimately fails to appeal to feelings of warmth and appreciation of most people

Did you watch the video? The better camera sensor is on the back and Face ID is garbage compared to Touch ID/fingerprint security. With that understanding it makes perfect sense to rid of the fugly notch.

Not gonna lie, I think that front camera / front of the phone design is straight FIRE! Though I'd prefer chin up top rather than down low.

I personally like the color gradient on the back too (at least in marketing photo)

Makes me wonder what 2019 iPhones will look like, I'm assuming just a slimmed down faceID (horizontally and vertically)

The competition is beating apple at their own game: design

“Design is not just what it looks like and how it feels. Design is how it works.”

Did you watch the video?

I stopped after a minute because that person was really annoying and uninformative.

The better camera sensor is on the back

No, best as I can tell, the only camera sensor is on the back.

and Face ID is garbage compared to Touch ID/fingerprint security.

Even if you believe that, this makes the two products hard to compare.

With that understanding it makes perfect sense to rid of the fugly notch.

I don't currently have an X-style iPhone, but I'll probably happily trade the notch over not having any camera whatsoever on the front.
