You want magical?

17" macbook pro
5k display. OLED touch pad. Premium sound system. 3 USB-C ports, 2 USB legacy ports, thunderbolt port, SD card. Octa-Core cpu.

$2400 base. $3100 all options.

You had me at 17"

I agree with the OP that this is the best Apple has done in a while regarding innovation, however, this is a no go for me. The lack of USB and SD card slot baffles me. I use SD cards almost daily to transfer media to my MBP. Having an external reader is a pitta. The lack of magsafe baffles me as well. I settled with the iPhone 7 and no headphone jack, not sure if I can settle without these ports on my MBP.

Earlier I agreed with the OP except for the removal of all ports. Now that I have had a chance to digest the information and review the new products, I've determined that this is possibly the worst upgrade for a MBP in Apple's history. Removal of industry standard ports, no power extension cable, $200 in accessories are needed to continue the workflow I have now, no headphone lightning port, minimum 10% more expensive for the consumer (probably due to China's worse economic FY growth in a long time), the list goes on. There is one thing that really disappoints me, and thats the removal of the glowing Apple logo. I'm not sure where Apple is headed or who they are targeting but its not your average consumer in the U.S. I still think Apple products are of the highest quality and their customer service is world class, so their products should come at a premium but not at the cost of functionality.

90% of the keynote was spent on touchbar & thinness features. That was impressive.

The industry standard ports are there. Its just the standard is changing.

We had the same ports for like 15 years.

Just get something like this, simple.

The power extension cable is 19$

$200 for some usb to usb c converters? lol i dont think so.

Why would you want lighting headphone port? Those are only like that on iPhone to make it water proof and thinner. A MacBook needs an audio port, its a music production and performance device. iPhone doesnt need that its a consumption device and bluetooth is fine.

Losing the outdated concept glowing apple logo is worth it due to thinness. The glowing Apple Logo was cool ten years ago.

For the first time in a long time Apple impressed me.

I almost shed a tear the new release is that good.

Now I have to come up with three thousand dollars.

Everything about everything from the way they presented it, the historical resonance, and the product they delivered exceeded expectations.

-I wasn't expecting such a drastic improvement in brightness and contrast.
-They used the same sound technology from the iPad Pro 13 which is excellent
-best hugest trackpad on earth, such a welcome improvement on what was already the best trackpad tech
-the bar is a productivity dream and a huge breakthrough I can tell I dont even have to use it. Makes the concept of touch screens like what microsoft is doing a misguided path when this option was right there at our fingertips.

Between the track pad and the bar the MBP all of sudden becomes as relevant as the iPad for productivity.

Imagine logic pro with the new MBP and an iPad with Logic remote on it.

Ridiculously fun and interactive and efficiently productive.

Yes. It's Deiter Bohn.

The MacBook keyboard is atrocious. They did away with the function keys that I use every day (software engineer). They max out at 16 gb ram. And they raised the price by $400.

The only way I would buy a laptop at $2400 is if it had 32 gb ram, mobile Xeon, and an nvidia 1080 gpu. Honestly I wouldn't even do that but that is what $2400 demands.

It's going to be a nice upgrade for me personally, coming from my mid-2012 rMBP. Plus I'm a developer and it was time to upgrade. Plus I got an education discount. I think the touch bar is going to be a great addition. Now bring on that 5K display.

Almost shed a tear? Really? Seriously?

Types of things that have made me shed a tear:

- Holding my son (and only child) the minute he was born.
- Losing an uncle to a brain tumour.

I'm sorry, but I stopped reading after I finished that sentence.

I absolutely agree! They have indeed done it again. Everything in the new MacBook is impressive, from the technology (its essentially a gaming laptop thats 1.8kg heavy and has 10 hours of battery) to the new interactive dimension. This update absolutely reaffirms Apple's position as innovation leader. The MS products yesterday were quite neat, but they pale in comparison to what Apple has delivered today.
Gaming laptop?
New macbook with 460 cant even 60 fps ultra on Overwatch at 1080p.

What are you gonna do with 32GB of RAM?

Not sure if you are a spec stan PC fan or you honestly have some reason for wanting it.

Lol, only a single tear?

I would be full on crying.

One thing I would add about the new TouchBar is an example in music production, producers often buy many hardware peripherals to do as much as possible "outside the box" and many old school producers still refuse to use anything but hardware for anything but a sequencer.

This includes pro mixers, various knobs, midi keyboards, drum pads, Ableton surfaces, launchers, and anything that can make them use the mouse as little as possible.

This is because a common philosophy is that creativity should not be interrupted and it should feel as organic as possible. Organized in a way that is intuitive. Your only focus should be your creativity.

This is the same philosophy that Apple has always had, that the Mac is for artists because it makes doing the work more fun because everything is so nice.

It was obvious to me when I saw the thing before even using it that it was a combination of all those concepts and executed in a very clever and brilliantly simple yet effective way.

WTF is going with Apple?
- Kaby Lake is already in production but they decided to sell an older generation, Skylake.
- No 32GB! Do they think everyone buy a MacBook Pro to read email, listen to music, and navigate on Internet. There are people who use Mac to do computation, edit high resolution images, use virtual machines and docker,... etc these use cases require more than 16GB
- Magic bar! Wow ! Why should I pay a premium price for buying the 15" model?? Couldn't they offer it as an option like the 13" model? This magic nut is useless for me because I will not use it. I use keyboard shortcuts which is much faster and more productive.

What's pissing me off is that many bdsm Apple followers will buy whatever crap Apple releases and at any price. In that why would they bother to lower the price or produce that fit customers' expectations...

Yeah its amazing how they can sell something like this new laptop and people just believe that its the best product out there. It simply isn't what you think it is. They clearly cut corners and you are paying even more than the previous model for it.

Its not a powerful computer by modern standards. The GPU's are all low to mid range, the ram is outdated and limited, the display isn't 4k. I won't harp on the processor as kaby lake isn't out yet and won't change much, but these other components could have been fixed today.

As I've been saying, this is a new air lineup. The pro is gone. You want a great 15" air? Thats awesome, just pony up 3k and its yours. For someone who will be using a computer for 4k editing, photography, CAD, engineering computations, ect... the new models just aren't good enough. I want a real keyboard, I want some legacy connections, I want more RAM, and I want a bigger battery. The current rMBP is a fantastic size. Even after 3 years of owning it I am amazed at just how thin and portable it is. They could have done so much more with it if they just kept that size instead of turning it into a new overpriced air. Bleh.

We were playing a game at Best Buy and getting 70-80 fps for the baseline non TouchBar MBP. The display is gorgeous and speakers were fantastic.

No I refuse to pay that amount for a mid-range laptop that takes multiple steps backwards from my current rMBP.

I like the new $2,399 MacBook Pro 15 especially in space gray. Apple computers rock and would like to continue to support Mac OSX. Will wait patiently for a more refined 2018 model and maybe at a lower cost. But I wouldn't call it "magical" unless you love to watch magic shows like having ports disappear...

I consider myself having enough knowledge about the industry to make an educated judgement on what is the best product and what is not, thank you :p

The GPUs are fastest available sub 50W mobile GPU, period. If you know something faster, please do share. The RAM is DDR3 2133 which is faster than DDR3 2133 that other premium laptops are shipping with. The only drawback is lack of 32GB ram, which again doesn't matter for most. Nobody cares that the display is not 4K, it has an amazing color gamut, brightness and contrast and more then enough resolution.

As I've been saying, this is a new air lineup. The pro is gone.

Its a super-fast ultra-portable machine with excellent battery life, which is exactly what many of us wanted. And its significantly faster than the previous iteration.

They could have done so much more with it if they just kept that size instead of turning it into a new overpriced air

Let's assume that they would have stayed with the old form factor. What is it they could have done instead? First of all, fit a 20% or so larger battery. That would of course be nice. They could have also put in a faster CPU... oh wait, there is no faster CPU. Doesn't matter, they could have put in a faster GPU... oh wait, there is also no faster GPU within the 50W TDP. I suppose that could have clocked that Polaris chip slightly faster though.

Yes and compared to a 400$ laptop, but you cant say this is good for gaming, more when macbook with this 460 cost around 3000€.

What does the price has to do with it? Who in their right mind would buy a MBP solely for gaming? The point is that you can play games on it if you want to.
