I am simply blown away by the new Siri

Alright, I've been doing some light and limited testing, and from what I can tell, the new Siri is very powerful, at least on an iPhone 17 Pro / MacBook Pro M3 with more than 12 GB of memory.

Here's the example shown in the screenshot below, explained : I received an email about a meeting being tomorrow at the P5 (fifth period, I'm a teacher). While having the email opened, I asked Siri to add it to my calendar, since the local model (I'm guessing) didn't know at first what the P5 meant in the email, it simply put it at 1 pm. I then thought I'd ask something maybe a bit crazy to test it, I told it to put it at the fifth period, it then took about 4-5 seconds (going to Cloud Compute I suppose), and asked if it should move it to 2:20 pm, which is the right time...

I couldn't believe it, I then asked how it knew, and to my surprise, it found an old picture scan from 2021 I had taken with the Notes app, understood the table showing different times and periods, and then set the event at the right time. All of this, while crossing the language barrier because I interact with my devices in English, but my stuff's in French. I'm amazed, I can't wait to test it out further.

I’ll have to do some testing with it. I hate that my company uses outlook app with no way to sync to Apple calendar so I’ll see if it can search that

Is your iPhone set in English?

Previously it was a requirement for Siri to work with AI to have both the device and Siri set to the same language. I’m wondering if this limitation is still there or if you can now have Siri => en and device => fr

Could you please test if it’s possible to change the way Siri AI formats its text output by giving it instructions, or if it’s possible to have it remember things? Basically, if you can customize it to the same extent as Gemini, ChatGPT, etc?
 
That is really cool to hear! It’s exactly what you hope a personal AI assistant can do for you, so I’m glad it finally actually works that way. I’m really curious to hear more real life examples.

Yeah no, the same limitation is still in place, my phone is set in English and so is Siri, only my stuff (notes, emails, events) is in French.

I did try it, and no. But it does references Notes often, it told me if I pinned a note, it would find it more easily. There might be something you can do, like give it instructions in a pinned note.

Makes me hopeful that the French Siri AI will be out soon or won't be too much of a barrier to use in the first days.

On another note : is your iOS in French or English? You needed to set your iOS the same language as Siri with Apple Intelligence before and it was pretty annoying by itself.

Hope to get it in french soon, i have to change my language to english but still on waiting list...

The fact that it’s delayed in Europe is probably why we’re taking the hit in Quebec with french language.

Works quite nicely. I set my phone to English + US App Store account since I'm in the EU and it works. Siri through speech only works in English as expected, but I can type to it in Dutch and get Dutch replies.
 
It works really well but it can still be frustrating. I am still getting 'You'll need to unlock your iPhone first' for a lot of prompts

That’s unfortunate.

In particular I’m concerned about the thing where these models try to be “helpful” by always asking a question at the end of responses, which just ends up feeling like a desperate attempt to increase usage and gets really annoying really quickly in my opinion, and other patterns of text generation that end up feeling like AI-isms almost.

Where would you say Siri AI ends up in regards to that? Is it more contextual and “mindful” of when it does those things than, say, something like default ChatGPT or Gemini? Or is it one of those things that still ends up very clearly sounding like an LLM?

My biggest frustration right now is that it often tries to use the local model or a lighter model and doesn't find what I'm asking, but when I tell it I know it's there, then it ends up taking a bit more time, but ends up finding it.

Can the "new" Siri add events to a calendar of your choosing?

The current/old one has no concept of different calendars and can only add events to the default one.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences on this Julien. I'm very curious as to how well the local model works in comparison to Apple's private compute. I'm also curious as to how hot your phone gets and the impact this local model has on your battery life.
 
This is what I'm thinking.

Can you pin chats and keep going back to it?

For example on Chat GPT I have a pinned chat where I have asked it to list the nutritional values in the order that My Fitness Pal lists them, and to estimate any values that a label doesn't show. I just go to that pinned chat, show a nutritional label and it does it all in seconds.
